Super Saturday 9 G1’s!! Santa Anita Opens

Racing starts off with a big bang in October as a Santa Anita opens its doors and hosts 4 Grade 1 races, to go with 5 Grade 1’s and a Grade 2 at Belmont on Saturday! This is the biggest race day we’ve seen in a while, as most of the top class horses will be turning in their final prep effort before the Breeders Cup in November.

Looking into the crystal ball, it looks very chalky at Belmont, and if history is any indicator, it will be. This doesn’t mean that all favorites will win, but most will in the graded races. However, thunderstorms threaten tonight and rain is scheduled for tomorrow, so some interesting things could happen.

Therefore we have to be on the lookout for legitimate long shots. The early races look chalky too, unless you can get some first time starters to win. That’s why the grid provides Win, ITM, and ROI columns for trainers. Don’t forget what happened not too long ago when a Grid ROI special first time starter won at 30-1 or so.

Races 1-3 all offer opportunities for first timers to win, for example in race 3, there’s a Dutrow firster by Bluegrass Cat at 12-1 and neither of the favorites have won yet in 2 tries.

Pace alert! In race 5, the Flower Bowl G1, there is no speed in the race. In fact, Dynaslew at 10-1 is the only EP runner. Sometimes the jockeys recognize this and compensate by adjusting their ride strategy, but most jockeys fear the lead on turf routes, and old habits die hard. Corey could find himself alone on the lead and he’s a great turf rider. Aruna at 5-1 and the favorite Stacelita should complete the trifecta.

In race 7, the Vosburgh G1, Big Drama assumes the favorite role, but was unimpressive in his last outing. Second choice Trappe Shot is in great form right now. However, you can’t overlook a coupled Pletcher entry at 10-1. Also, Giant Ryan and Apriority have shown the ability to compete in this class before. The race seems wide open if you look at all the contenders.

The Kelso G2 looks like Uncle Mo and Jackson Bend will duke it out for the win, and if they run their last race either would be hard to beat. However, the last race for both was a sprint, and their last time at route, both underperformed. Enter Jersey Town and Sangaree, both of which ran big last at route. Even the longest shot, frontrunner Golddigger, ran better in his last route then the top 2 favorites.

Those are some of the long shot possibilities I see, but don’t forget to include the favorites in all your exotics. You should never lose a rolling wager when a favorite wins.

Good luck and have a great Super Saturday!

Yours in winning

Dalton
