Belmont Recap; Colonial Turf Cup, Mother Goose, Hollywood Oaks, Summer Racing

It’s been a couple of weeks since the Belmont Stakes and hopefully you did well that day. If you read the last newsletter, you know Palace Malice was my top pick in the Belmont, and I provided some good rationale for that.

I even offered alibis for his subpar Derby performance, such as: he may not have liked the track, or the slop, or setting ridiculous blazing fractions on the lead 3 wide early in the race. In addition, Todd Pletcher proved once again that putting on blinkers for the first time in the Derby rarely works.

I admit that I did gloss over Oxbow a bit, assuming if the track was mud or slop he’d be a throw out. However, the track did dry out all day Saturday and was rated Fast several hours before the Belmont Stakes. So, without much speed in the race, Oxbow was back in as a contender.

Altogether it was an easy trifecta that paid decently: My top pick, over the Preakness champ, over the Derby champ. I also admitted to disliking Incognito, but it was one of the few early speed horses, and I like to wheel all at the bottom of the super anyway, especially in this type of race.

As you know by now, summer racing doesn’t end with the Belmont, in fact far from it. Last weekend our featured card was the Stephen Foster G1 at Churchill Downs and we had a free grid for that day too.

This weekend features the Mother Goose G1 which predictably is a 5-horse race with a heavy favorite. The same can be said for the Hollywood Oaks, which is why this weekend’s featured grid will be for Colonial Downs. Pick up this free grid here:

Next week will be the Iowa Oaks and Derby among other stakes racing, so you’ll want to keep track of those three-year-olds as we prepare for more great summer racing, at the end of which the top 3yo’s will be competing for crowns.

Saratoga and Del Mar will begin their legendary meets within a month from now! We provide grids for every race day of the meet for Saratoga and Del Mar, the same as we are currently providing all race cards for Belmont, Churchill and Hollywood.

For today I’m going to leave you with the free Arlington Park card. Arlington doesn’t even start for a couple more hours, but has a decent Pick 6 carryover of $65k which will begin at about 5:30 ET, which is 4:30 Chicago time. That will be a good way to kick off your weekend.
