Weekend Winners Club

There’s a lot of racing action picking up this week, including the Del Mar meet, which began on Wednesday, and the legendary Saratoga summer meet which starts today!!

Saratoga still leads the nation’s tracks in graded stakes races per meet, most likely because horses on the east coast would prefer to run in upstate New York during the summer than anywhere else.

Saratoga starts their jam-packed meet today with a 10 race card and 117 initial entries. That’s almost 12 entries per race if you’re counting. There are several high-level allowances, 1 listed $100k stakes, and 2 graded stakes.

The G3 Schuylerville is the headline race featuring two year olds that are shooting for next year’s Kentucky Oaks. The chalk includes fillies with strong debuts trained by William Bret Calhoun, Steve Asmussen, and shocker, Todd Pletcher. Maybe not a good betting race but good for watching.

The faster and experienced horses will be entered in the James Marvin G3, one race beforehand. This race for 3 and up features 9 of the top sprinters in the country. Today’s Saratoga grid is free here:

In the meantime, Del Mar continues their week with an 8 race card with the usual marginal fields. Friday’s highlighted race will be the CTBA $100k for 2yo fillies which don’t look anywhere near as good on paper as those running in the Schuylerville.

On Saturday, however, things will come alive at Del Mar with a 10 race card featuring the Eddie Read G1 on turf for 3 and up. Jeranimo, Slim Shadey, and Fed Biz are among the big names in that 10 horse field.

Saturday stakes action continues at Saratoga with the G1 CCA Oaks for 3yo fillies. Princess of Sylmar and Unlimited budget are hard to beat chalk in the field of 5. The G3 Shuvee Handicap will contest Flashy American and Authenticity among the rising Eblouissante and others. 11 races on the card.

Also on Saturday, Delaware Park will host the Delaware Handicap G1, one of the biggest filly races of the year, considering the $ ¾ million purse, among other stakes racing.

What is the carryover situation anyway? Louisiana Downs continues its monster Pick 5 Jackpot and due to no unique winners, it’s now over $300k and will likely surpass ½ million if not hit this weekend.

If you thought the great racing would end on Saturday however, you’d be wrong. Del Mar continues Sunday with two stakes races including the San Clemente G2, and the Nijinsky G2 will be run at Woodbine.

But most eyes will be on Saratoga on Sunday, where the Sanford G2 will feature 2yo males who are eyeing a run for the roses next year. It’s true that few of them ever do make the Derby, or even run farther than 7f , but that can be said of many 2yo races.

The Sanford offers a purse of $200k this year. By comparison, the North Dakota Derby, also on Sunday, will be run for a purse of 5 grand. But you can’t blame them for trying. I’m sure their 1:20 final time for a 6f race will deliver plenty of excitement in its own way.
