Jim Dandy, Haskell, Bing Crosby, Prioress, Diana among Graded Stakes this Weekend July 26

July 26, 2013

Last week was exciting as racing began at the legendary Saratoga and Del Mar meets, but believe it or not, this weekend is even better. Today, those two tracks continue their stakes-packed meets with the Cougar II at and Curlin stakes.

In the Cougar G3 at Del Mar, front running favorite Sky Kingdom will try to make his speed hold up for 12 furlongs to fend off late charges by favored closers Kettle Corn and Richard’s Kid. Other talented closers are Rousing Sermon at 12-1, Oilisblackgold at 8-1, and Lime Rickey looks to transfer his excellent turf form at 12-1. The Del Mar grid has already been posted.

The Curlin $100k at Saratoga is evidently for connections who would like to run in the Jim Dandy but aren’t quite good enough. The 8 horse, 7 entry field is chalk full of low odds, pun intended, and the favored coupled entry looks hard to beat. If they do, it will likely be a 3-1 or 4-1 winner.

The real action heats up on Saturday with the Fleet Treat for 3yof and San Diego H G2 at Del Mar. Interestingly enough, Kettle Corn is also entered in this 8.5f race. We’ll have to wait until later today to see where Sadler places him. Last year’s Belmont runner up Paynter will likely be the favorite in his 2nd race of the year. Batti Man, Clubhouse Ride, and Liaison round out a competitive field.

Saratoga has another awesome card on Saturday with 2 Grade 1 races. Starting with the Prioress G1 at 6f for fillies, led by favorite Kauai Katie looking to return to sprint form. The Diana G1 at 9f on turf is also a short field, with Stephanie’s Kitten heavily favored. However it’s interesting to note that the 2 fillies tied for the best PF last race are Dayatthespa at 6-1 and Laughing at 12-1.

The feature race of course, is not a G1 but the Jim Dandy G2 for 3yo’s. Belmont champion Palace Malice will likely be favored, followed closely in odds by Mylute, who finished 5th in the Kentucky Derby and 3rd in the Preakness. Also running are Will Take Charge, who finished poorly in all 3 TC races, and Freedom Child, who ran a great Peter Pan before going backwards in the Belmont Stakes.

Good odds are offered by Bashaar and Looking Cool at 15-1, but if a late runner wins it, it will be hard to imagine it not being Mylute, who has the dominant PF’s and LP rating. The pick is definitely Mylute unless the track is favoring only speed. So far, it looks like the spa will be relatively dry until Sunday. There will likely be a free grid for this race card. Keep an eye out.

Pardon the expression, but It Doesn’t Stop There! Sunday is full of great racing again. Del Mar holds the Bing Crosby G1 sprint on polytrack, where 5th place Preakness finisher Goldencents returns to spring for the first time since his maiden race. Comma To The Top looks to dominate this one. Saratoga will host the Amsterdam G2 for 3yo at 6f on the dirt.

But the real action is at Monmouth, holding its biggest card of the year, with 5 (FIVE!) graded stakes races and 2 listed stakes. They will host the Matchmaker G3 on turf and Molly Pitcher G2 on dirt for 3upfm. The Monmouth Cup G2 on dirt will be run by TC contenders of yesteryear such as Take Charge Indy, Pants on Fire, Norman Asbjornson, and Hymn Book.

Then there’s the Oceanport G3 on turf for 3up at 8.5f, where Silver Max will attempt to transfer excellent form and early pace on dirt to turf once again. Top late runner Howe Great will have a say in the matter. Also on the card are the 2 listed $100k 6f sprints, the Teddy Drone for males and Regret for females. But there’s one more race on Sunday’s card, what was it?

The HASKELL! Wow, I almost forgot the Haskell Invitational G1. Vyjack was entered in the Dandy and drew post 10, but got post 1 in the 7 horse Haskell so he will run here. Oxbow was made 2-1 ML 2nd choice but will likely be the favorite after excellent TC performances. Wood Memorial winner Verrazano was made the 9-5 favorite. Kentucky Derby runner up Golden Soul will look to get back on track after a disappointing Belmont Stakes.

There will likely be a free grid provided for that as well. Remember, for ALL the grids for the major tracks and big race days around the country, visit the HRBW site and check out the options.
