Horse Racing Weekend 04/17/15

The Kentucky Derby preps are over and the field is all but set. The rankings are final and the top 20 horses are in if they want the slot. The basic Derby Grid is out and posted. You might be surprised to see that the #1 ranked horse in the standings is not in the top 5 of anything except LP. Secret link here

Also, this Saturday we have the Illinois Derby, which used to count toward the Kentucky Derby earnings and in fact launched one Derby champion, War Emblem, earlier this century, no longer has any bearing on the Kentucky Derby. Despite offering a $400k purse, the running horses can’t earn any points to run for the roses.

Nonetheless, they will continue to run, and likely use it as a prep towards the Preakness or Belmont. Currently only two horses really stand out, the two favored horses: Cross the Line (Line of David, Hollendorfer, top EP) and 2nd time starter Whisky Ticket (Ghostzapper, Baffert, 2nd EP).

A more interesting race day will be found at, believe it or not, at Charles Town, which has 6 stakes races including the $1.5 Million G2 Charles Town Classic. The Classic features Shared Belief at 2-5, but I wouldn’t give it up to him just yet since Moreno at 7-2 has 2nd EP, and Vyjack at 12-1 and Page Mckenney may have something to say. The top EP horse is 50-1.

Now, we can go to last weekend’s recap and how the Grid impacted the values. The Lexington Stakes was won by Divining Rod at 3-1 which many expected, and the Arkansas Derby by American Pharoah (yes they misspell it) which everyone expected at 1-9.

Last weekend was unfortunately dominated by mostly favoritism, and as aforementioned, there’s nothing the Grid or any other handicapping tool can do to prevent favorites from winning. It’s just a consequence of some horses being more talented.

However, there were a few highlights last weekend. Gulfstream’s race 2 on Saturday was won by Tiz Time Is Now at 43-1. Was it top ranked by anyone? No. but he was the only E horse in the race, and they let him get out front to an easy slow lead and hang on to win by a neck.

In Keeneland race 2 on Saturday, to get your Pick 4 off to a flying start, Flash Trading, the Grid’s 2nd ranked power horse, won at 9.5 to 1. Later on, in the last race, the 2nd EP horse placed 2nd at 32-1 behind the 2nd LP horse at 4-1. That exacta paid almost $250.

In other win/place news, Zippzazapper placed 2nd in race 5 at Oaklawn at 10-1. The Grid had him at top EP. The Grid also easily gave you the Nothern Spur and Arkansas Derby winners but there were no odds. At 2nd in the Derby was the Grid’s 3rd power horse at 7-1, and at 3rd was 2nd LP and power at 20-1, but there wasn’t much money to win with a 1-9 favorite, American Pharoah.

Over on the west coast, Santa Anita’s race 6 was won by Rule He Will at 6-1, top in speed, power, and EP for that race according to the Grid. The next race was won by a 18-1 filly that wasn’t highly ranked, but was the highest in the ROI/WIN/ITM columns with $1, 35% win and 58% ITM for situational stats.

The Santa Anita card was wrapped up with a win by Pax Tecum, top Grid EP horse, at 31-1, in his 2nd start. The late Pick 4 paid over $700 and 5 of 6 Pick 6 paid $8 grand.

Check out all the options for getting in on the Grid for this year’s Triple Crown.

Have a great weekend, good luck, and enjoy the races!
