American Pharoah to run in Haskell; Jim Dandy to the Rescue

This weekend’s scoop in horse racing.

The good news is that no membership drive will be needed today. The other good news is that there’s some great racing this weekend around the country from East to West. Let’s start with today’s highlights:
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club: CTBA S, $100,000g, 2yo f, 5.5f.
Saratoga Race Course: Curlin S, $100,000a, 3yo, 9f.
Saratoga Pick 6 $90,851.00
Gulfstream Park Pick 6 Jackpot $78,130.00
Del Mar Pick 6 $53,419.00

That’s right, not only some nice stakes races to kick things off at the legendary Saratoga and Del Mar tracks, but also some carryovers building up for us.

Saratoga’s Curlin Stakes features Tekton, Tommy Macho, and Stanford, who are the interchangeable favorites at the moment. Smart Transition would be a nice play if his ML odds of 5-1 hold up.

The Friday lineup is a typically great summer weekend card at the Spa with 110 horses initially entered in the 10 races, including over 60 entered in the Pick 6 with the carryover.

There’s also an optional claimer worth 80k in race 9 with some fast horses trained by Brown, Pletcher, Zito, and Jacobson. Matterhorn and Big Looie offer good morning line odds and value. Today’s feature free Grid will be Saratoga.

The Del Mar card is not as good as usual but does offer almost 80 horses for their 8 races. I think the only reason Obey isn’t currently favored in the 2yo feature stakes race is because Sam Scolamieri isn’t a big-name trainer, even though he has a big name.

Saratoga and Del Mar continue the excitement on Saturday, with Del Mar hosting the Hirsch G1 and the Spa with 5 stakes races including the Vanderbilt G1 and Jim Dandy G2.

The Dandy has a nice but short field including Upstart who’s cross-entered in the Haskell, and Tekton who’s entered in the Curlin.

One of the best value plays of tomorrow so far looks like Rico Capote in race 11 with a morning line of 8-1. He has the best numbers according to the Grid and is testing his wheels on turf for the first time. The post time odds will be much less.

The best race card of the weekend is probably Mountaineer on Saturday, which has, count them, 9 stakes races, headlined by the G2 West Virginia Derby. Again, Tekton is entered, along with Stanford who is not expected to race there this weekend.

In the Derby, War Story has ML odds of 12-1 but there’s no way those will hold up. He’s the top late runner, along with Tale of Verve at 4-1. Their odds will be closer at post time.

The last race contains two horses switching to turf with good numbers, the Grid’s top EP Cerro, and the one with top PF last out, achieved on mud, Mal Guapo. Both are 12-1 on the morning line.

The weekend won’t be complete until Monmouth has its monster card on Sunday, with the featured Haskell Invitational G1, where American Pharoah will supposedly run again and be heavily favored. However, in a race that appears to have plenty of speed, top closer Keen Ice at 12-1 could factor in.

A couple of the other races on the card look more entertaining, such as the Teddy Drone for 3up, which includes Wildcat Red, Stallwalkin’ Dude, Catron, and Fabulous Kid, sprinting for $100k. Delta Bluesman and Uptown Boy are the top two speedsters (EP) and worth 10-1 and 8-1 on the ML.

The Monmouth Cup G2 will have some of the best older horses competing at 8.5f, including Bradester, Grasshoppin, Protonico, Valid, and Pants On Fire. The race looks chalky but should be exciting. Keep your eye out for a free Monmouth Sunday Grid at the usual place.

As always, all the grids for your favorite tracks can be accessed by enrolling in one of our subscription or onetime payment options here.
