Smokey Image remains unbeaten in Cal Cup Derby

Smokey Image extended his winning streak to 6 in the $250k Cal Cup Derby today, remaining undefeated by cruising to a 6 length win over the field of 7 three year olds.

The Southern Image colt was making his first start over two turns, but had no problems in the 8.5f Derby. He took to the lead this time, setting legitimate fractions, but the field was no match for him in the stretch.
It was also the 5th straight stakes win for the Carla Gaines trainee, who has yet to compete in a graded stakes race. Although he picked up $137k for the win, he did not increase his Derby points total of zero.
Obviously it’s time for everyone to consider this colt as a Kentucky Derby contestant, and we can almost guarantee his next start will be in a Derby championship series race worth 50 points.
The race also kicked off a pick 6 sequence with a pool exceeding $1.2 million.
