Japan’s Lani won the 2016 UAE Derby, edging out favored UAE Oaks winner, filly Polar River, deep in the long stretch at Meydan in an exciting victory for Japan.

The Tapit colt earned 100 Kentucky Derby points for his victory, so would likely be in the top 20 should Yoko Maeda choose to ship him across the world. The filly won’t qualify with only 40 points.

Another Japanese colt, Yu Change picked up 3rd after leading for the 2nd half of the race, over Vale Dori from Argentina, who led the first half, which went in a slow 50.4.

The lone American contender, El Camino Real Derby champion Frank Conversation, broke well in 2nd, but was only able to remain in contention for the first half mile before fading.
