Oscar Nominated wins Spiral Stakes for Derby ticket

Saturday, April 2 2016

Turfway’s biggest race of the year, the Spiral Stakes G3, was won by Oscar Nominated, a turf horse by Kitten’s Joy making his first start on anything other than turf, in his 7th race. Turfway’s main track is polytrack, which is why he was entered here at 24-1.

Runner up Azar is another turf horse who finished 2nd at 8-1, but he had won an OCM on dirt at Gulfstream in his last race. Surgical Strike, another turf horse, tried to win his 2nd straight on Turfway’s polytrack and finished 3rd at 8-1.
.
Two Step Time, another turf horse making his 2nd polytrack start with zero dirt races, was 4th in a 4-way photo for 1st thru 4th.
.
Basically the Spiral is a prep for 3yo’s that can run on turf and poly but either should not or could not run on dirt. The performance figures for this year’s winner prove that none of them should be in the Kentucky Derby.
.
It indeed was once won by Animal Kingdom, an amazing animal that could run on all surfaces, and proved it in the Kentucky Derby and later in the Dubai World Cup. Although he was a turf horse, he was a lot better than any in this field.
.
Our performance figures aren’t in yet for the Spiral, but Oscar Nomination’s Beyer was 82 for that race. By comparison, Animal Kingdom’s was 92. I expect the difference in our PF’s to be about the same. There are no Ky Derby contenders here.
