9-5 favorite Shagaf looked to win his 4th straight race and 3rd at Aqueduct after winning the Gotham. Flexibility was aiming to rebound from a 4th place finish in the Withers, after getting out from Mohaymen’s shadow to win his own stakes in the Jerome. Neither hit the board in the Wood Memorial.
.
Instead, it was 2-1 Outwork who battled most of the way with Matt King Coal, setting legitimate fractions, then Outworking him in the stretch for the win, adding to his Tampa Bay Derby runner up credentials. The Uncle Mo colt held on for dear life from the late charge of 81-1 long shot Trojan Nation who battled him the rest of the way to a photo finish.

(It should be noted that despite the race announcer repeatedly calling Trojan Nation Adventist, who did end up a distant 3rd, the announcer did correct himself after the finish, and it was indeed Trojan Nation who battled for 2nd . Outwork, the first winner from Uncle Mo last year, will join half brothers Nyquist, and possibly Mo Tom as 3 Uncle Mo colts may take the field in the Kentucky Derby. Trojan Nation by Street Sense also went from 0 to 40 Derby points in less than 2 minutes. Shagaf was in contention in 4th headed into the stretch but faded.

The story of the day was undoubtedly Trojan Nation however, who came in with a 5 race southern Cal record of three 3rd place finishes, a 4th, and a 6th, all in maiden races in the $52-56k range. That’s right, he was a maiden, and still is, despite coming within a nose of winning the Wood.
.
But they shipped him 3000 miles and put him in a Grade 1 race, one of the premier KD preps, and he excelled. He plodded in 8th until after the Âľ mile mark, then exploded around the turn into the stretch, gaining and just missing the win by a half head. It was reminiscent of a classic Street Sense race. In the undercard, the top 3yo in the Bay Shore G3 was 2nd time starter and favorite Unified, who dispatched the field handily. King Krantz was 2nd and the rest of the field was hard to find.
