Belmont Memorial Day Pick 6 Recap- You could have won?!

Tuesday, May 31
Belmont Park
.
It’s time to do a little Monday morning quarterbacking, but yesterday was Memorial Day and we’re talking about those races, so we’ll do it today. We had a nice breakdown of possible winners for the huge Pick 6 opportunity at Santa Anita, along with the free Grid PP’s.
.
We did get it right that the pool would go from $437k to around $2 million, as it reached $1.949 million. Unfortunately, like the other 974,485 tickets that didn’t have it, neither did we. Only 1 ticket took home the $1,478,942 prize. So if you know who that was, hit them up for some info. All said, there were only a couple of winners we didn’t like going in.
.
Also unfortunate for our readers, is that the Belmont Pick 6, which we didn’t provide free Grid and analysis for (which our subscribers do all get) could have been had by any of us with a logical wager. The Grid had good indicators on all the winners, some of which we had good payouts on. Albeit, the handle was smaller than SA, only $433k, but the one winning ticket got $378,866, which is not bad for a day’s work.

Now we’ll go thru the races one by one. But we’re only covering winners for brevity.
.
First, the weather conditions caused the first and last legs of the Pick 6 to be taken off the turf, with the first running on a muddy sealed and the last on a good sealed track. Both were won by favorites that were solid on dirt previously, E type horses. One was 3rd in EP rating.
.
We’ve said many times you should use favorites as the basis for your rolling wagers whenever affordable. So the Pick 6 was bookended by two solid favorites in 6f sprints on an off track. Easy part. Enough said.

.
Now it gets interesting. Race 6 was a $125k stakes scheduled for 7f dirt and run on mud. In a field of 8 there were 2 heavy favorites that took most of the money, and most people’s slots in the rollers. There was also an EP7 that was ranked 2nd in the Grid in LP and Stamina, an interesting combination. He apparently liked the surface and won as the longest shot at 19.7-1.
.
Race 7 was a $125k stakes run on 8f on yielding turf with a field of 9. One lukewarm favorite and 3 in the 3.5 to 4 range. The winner was 4-1, and ranked top in LP and Stamina in the Grid. He was also the only S0 in the field, which had a decent amount of speed scheduled. It turned out with more early speed than they bargained for, as they set a fast half mile, at which our hero was last, before passing everyone.

.
Race 8 was the 7f dirt stakes for fillies with a field that ended up at 8 after scratches. The track was upgraded to Good, and not much speed showed up. They ran a full second slower first ÂĽ, and almost 2 seconds slower half mile, allowing our winner to take the lead at the half when the favored leader was already weakening. The 4-1 winner had the top EP rating and 1 of the top trainers. Ironically, she ended up running the race a half second faster than male race 2 back.
.
Race 9 was the filly/mare stakes on 8f yielding turf, this time with a field of 12. It had some nice quality early speed in it, but didn’t run as fast as the brothers did early. One that was tied for top EP finished 2nd after battling for the lead early. The 7-1 winner was a P2 that ranked 2nd in LP and Stamina, and won after coming from last at the half. Sound familiar yet? Favorite finished 3rd.
.
As luck would have it, that was the only leg we missed in the Pick 6, figuring if it were won from behind it would be the favorite who had top LP, Stamina, Power, and Chad Brown training a turf horse. In fact, we almost singled him but included the top speeder that finished 2nd. So we were one away from a $190k payout, on a horse we liked. The consolation ticket only paid $640.
.
So, as you can see, any of us could have got that Pick 6 using the Grid. We would have had to split up the pool some more, but what’s $380k among friends? We could throw a good Belmont Stakes party with some of that.
.
Thus endeth the lesson. Let’s hit it next time.
