Big day of racing at Del Mar today as they host the annual running of the Pacific Classic G1 along with the Del Mar Oaks G1 and Handicap G2 both run on turf.

In the Classic, Beholder, the only female, will attempt to defend her title at ML odds of 3-1, having run possibly the greatest race of her life in last year’s Classic. After 8 straight graded stakes victories, she uncharacteristically lost the lead in the Clement Hirsch G1 in late July to Stellar Wind, finishing a hard fought 2nd, but appears to be in good form.

At 5-2 ML is Dortmund, another front running type who people forget finished 3rd in last year’s Kentucky Derby, and appears to be in top form again after winning the Native Diver G3 last year. His debut this year was a 2nd in the San Diego Hcp G2 to the horse we’ll talk about next.

California Chrome 8-5 looks as good as ever right now. After taking almost a year off, he began the year with a solid San Pasqual win before shipping off to Dubai for a prep stakes win and a big triumph in the World Cup. He came back in good form with the San Diego win and looks almost invincible right now.

It seems like a 3 horse race to most, but there are 9 initially entered, and with the 3 outstanding front runners, there might be an Hoppertunity (8-1) for a late running closer to get a slice or even the win.
