2025 Preakness, Black Eyed Susan, and Pimlico Special Grid

Preakness and Black Eyed Susan, full Friday and Saturday Pimlico Grids:

Starting with the G3 Pimlico Special, a historic race that began in 1938 when Seabiscuit famously beat War Admiral in a match race, this race has seen many great horses over the years.

This year’s version has a fairly strong field of 9 after morning scratches. The ML favorite is Star of Wonder at 7-2, who has good credentials but hasn’t even run in a stakes race yet.

My favorite is Philas Fogg, posting the 2nd best PF in the field of 97 after an impressive romp in the Excelsior stakes at Aqueduct, where he previously won another stakes race.

The best PF actually belongs to Encino 6-1 for his 2nd place finish in the Kentucky Cup, but that was on polytrack, and his last couple dirt races were subpar. He will be challenged on the front end by Awesome Aaron at 12-1, who has is tied for the 2nd best dirt PF.

Also tied for the 2nd best PF is Red Route One at 8-1, an experience stakes racer that would like that hot pace up front; and Time for Trouble at 20-1 who would also like to pick up some pieces after a pace collapse.  San Siro can figure in with a good and untroubled trip.

Also keep in mind that there could be afternoon thunderstorms, clouding up the situation and putting Cataleya Strike on the map at 20-1, who has already won 2 muddy track races at Laurel.

Friday’s feature race is the G2 Black Eyed Susan for 3yo fillies going 9f on dirt. The top power horse, with the best LP rating, and the top PF in The Grid is Kinzie Queen, and I doubt that the 10-1 ML will hold up, because some heavy gamblers use this grid.

Because this race doesn’t have a lot of speed, I like Moon Cache as my 2nd pick at 20-1 ML, with the top speed rating and 2nd best power rating. This would definitely be my super long shot special of the day if those odds hold up.

My 3rd choice is 8-1 Reply, who followed up her debut maiden win with a strong 2nd in the Weber City Miss Stakes, right down the street from here at Laurel Park.

The 2nd ML choice Margie’s Intention has merit and benefits from consistency and a strong trainer.

Princess Aliyah at 15-1 has actually the top PF of anyone, and Lukas does often make magic here.

The ML favorite Runnin N Gunnin has some merit but I don’t see her as the best filly here at all, and nor do I see the 3rd ML pick Amarth as getting near the winner’s circle.

If the track does end up muddy or sloppy, then Paris lily and Liam in the Dust are also contenders.

Thus, according to the ML’s, this race is chock full of non-chalk longshots that are legitimate contenders, and an opportunity for some great trifecta and superfecta payouts.

.

Moving on to the G1 Preakness on Saturday May 17:  a very interesting field of 9 that contains no Kentucky Derby winner, but does have those that finished 2nd, 7th, and 10th in that race.

Journalism is the clear cut favorite in this race, with the top PF, Power, and LP after a Santa Anita Derby win and runner up in the sloppy Kentucky Derby. After that it gets more intriguing.

American Promise at 15-1 flopped in the slop at Churchill after a strong Virginia Derby win, giving him the 2nd best PF in the field, and as aforementioned, Lukas does often perform magic here.

Baffert brings lightly raced Goal Oriented, winner of both of his races, and holding on for a front end win in a Kentucky derby undercard allowance, in which he ran a faster mile than any in the Ky Dby.

Sandman should return to his Arkansas Derby winner’s form where he posted the 3rd best PF.

River Thames also looks strong after placing in 2 straight graded stakes races for Pletcher.

Also don’t overlook G3 Lexington Stakes winner Gosger at 20-1, another super long shot.

There are lot of possibilities in the Preakness so craft your exotics carefully, and don’t forget about the BES-Preakness 2 day double.

As usual, get the grid at horseracebetwin.com/Preakness, and good luck. Dalton out.
