May 31 Precap: Graded Stakes Racing at Churchill Downs
.
Saturday May 31, the last day of racing in the month of May concludes with great stakes racing around the continent, particularly at Churchill Downs and Woodbine. Today we’ll focus on the stakes card at Churchill Downs. Download today’s Free Grid below to follow along.
.
The stakes racing begins at 3:18PM ET but the undercard has some exciting races beginning with the first post at 12:45ET.
.
.
Race 1 is a MSW 120k which is a high stakes purse for maidens, and the 8f distance is rare for maidens. . Obviously none of this field of 8 has won yet, and the favorite Chillax seems the most likely to win after finishing 2nd by ½ length in his past 2 races. For value I like Special Awakening at 15-1 ML after losing by a nostril in his 2nd lifetime race and 1st dirt race last out at Keeneland.
Race 2 has a field of 12 slated and I like the value on #12 Lightning Struck at 10-1 ML, with top LP rank.
Race 3 will also be a field of 12 for MSW 2yo’s, most of which are 1st time starters. Anything goes in this type of race, so I advise betting on the high percentage 2yo trainers, particularly the 3 alternates if they draw in. Steve Asmussen will have a live contender either way.
Race 4: speaking of MSW’s, there are some potential solid 3yo’s in this race, some are long shots.
Race 5 brings some optional claimers. The 3 favorites are nice but #11 Overcome Adversity at 8-1 which is the morning line, would be a great bargain, after an impressive winning debut at Keeneland in April.
Race 6 begins the first stakes race on the card with the Aristides Grade 3. It looks like a chalky 3 horse race and the favorite Skelly needs to prove he belongs in graded stakes company.
Race 7 is the Audubon Stakes for 3yo’s on turf, and it looks very chalky so I’m skipping it.
Race 8 is the Shawnee Grade 3 stakes, and again it looks chalky but in a two turn race I prefer the top LP fillies like 8 In Just My Heels at 20-1ML and Royal Spa at 10-1 ML.
Race 9 the Arlington Stakes on turf: who will get past the favorite Mercante? Well, the best odds you’ll get is Gigante at 10-1 ML with top LP according to the Grid, a great factor in two turn turf routes.
Race 10 is the 9f Grade 3 Blame back on dirt. Again this looks real chalky but for value try to get 6 Hall of Fame at 8-1, who placed in his last two graded races for Steve Asmussen. I also like Antiquarian at 15-1 ML with the great Todd Pletcher training him to a Peter Pan win last year.
Race 11 ends the card with the Regret G3 stakes, back on turf at approximately 6pm ET. Don’t worry about the chalk in this race because it’s wide open. In fact, once again the top LP in the field is #10 Golden Sunshine with a 12-1ML. Try to wheel in the longest shot in the field #1 Jalila at 30-1 for some good value.
Keep in mind we only call out live long shots in these Precaps, because that’s where the money is made. Let the other shows and articles brag about the 3-1 favorites and tell you how great they are, but that’s not what we do here. If you like to bet on favorites than F you.
