Sat.Apr.13 Newsletter: Blue Grass, Arkansas Derby, and Kentucky Derby Leaderboard

In road to the roses action this week, we have the Blue Grass Stakes and Arkansas Derby, just three weeks before the Kentucky Derby. We’re still in the 3rd leg of the championship series for the new point standings for determining who runs for the roses. That means the races are still worth 100 points for the winner (40-20-10 for next 3). The current standings:

1 Orb Shug McGaughey III 150 $840,000
2 Verrazano Todd Pletcher 150 $810,000
3 Goldencents Doug O’Neill 129 $1,208,000
4 Revolutionary Todd Pletcher 110 $720,000
5 Lines of Battle Aidan O’Brien 100 $1,261,089
6 Vyjack Rudy Rodriguez 70 $505,000
7 Will Take Charge D. Wayne Lukas 60 $512,971

20 Departing Al Stall, Jr. 20 $130,000
21 Code West Bob Baffert 20 $90,000
22 West Hills Giant John Terranova II 20 $89,000
23 Tiz a Minister Paul Aguirre 20 $81,000
24 Golden Soul Dallas Stewart 14 $84,000
25 Dynamic Sky Mark Casse 13 $289,168
26 Overanalyze Todd Pletcher 10 $308,381
27 Power Broker Bob Baffert 10 $225,000
28 Mr Palmer Bill Mott 10 $110,000
29 Abraham Todd Pletcher 10 $80,000
30 Elnaawi Kiaran McLaughlin 10 $70,000

Now you can see why horses such as the disappointing Overanalyze, Dynamic Sky and Palice Malice (32) are running in the big races today. They need big points to get into that top 20. I expect one of the latter two Pletcher colts will make it.

What I noticed when looking at these fields, as well as the fields for the other 3yo prep stakes that have been run, is that this is the slowest batch of 3yo’s I’ve ever seen. Few if any triple digit speed figures exist for the group of them.

The races are exciting from the standpoint of seeing who stamps their ticket to the Derby, but this crop is physically unimpressive with no standouts. Perhaps this is what we get after a decade of extensive drug testing, the field seems to get slower every year. Then they break out as 4yos.

The real treat is the undercard races where the top older horses run. For example, look at the two graded stakes races before the Derby at Oaklawn. There are only a couple of horses that have NOT achieved triple digits, and those in the Oaklawn Handicap get them routinely. That’s why I provided the Grid for the full card today free.

Of course, if you wanted to get all the races for Oaklawn, Keeneland, Aqueduct, and Santa Anita, the latter two of which have pick 6 carryovers today, then you would subscribe to the Grid. You would get any other major tracks that begin soon such as Churchill Downs, and big race day cards elsewhere.

If you went monthly, one month would get you through the Kentucky Derby, including the Kentucky Derby Grid which has almost every criteria known to man. That one month is just $2 more than the Derby Grid alone costs to the public, and you can cancel anytime.

Alternately you could get two months up front, no recurring, which would not only get you through the Preakness but also the Met Mile and Belmont Stakes, the Stephen Foster, and all the other great stakes races in between at Churchill, Hollywood, Belmont, etc. if you signed up today.

That’s it for the day. Good luck!

PS the aforementioned Derby Grid will begin development next week, so keep that in mind, but you can sign up at any time. http://horseracebetwin.com/derbygrid.htm
