Weekend Winners Club

It is Independence Day weekend and you know what that means… lots of great horse racing across the continent, from Florida up to Canada. It actually starts today with a couple of stakes races at Belmont, then escalates throughout the weekend.

On the 4th of July, Belmont will host the Poker Handicap G3, and Monmouth will run the Jersey Shore G3 as a prep for the Haskell later this summer. None of the Triple Crown horses are in the Jersey Shore, but Monmouth has a nice Pick 6 Jackpot going. On the west coast, Hollywood will have the Swaps stakes, also for three year olds. Java’s War will face off with Chief Havoc and two others in that field. On Friday the 5th, Parx will have the 5f G3 Dash on turf.

Saturday, things will pick up again with Belmont holding the Suburban G2 and Dwyer G2, another 3yo race. Once again, no Triple Crown participants are in that one. However, Flat Out and Last Gunfighter will square off in the Suburban.

The biggest card of the weekend though is Saturday’s Summit of Speed at Calder, featuring 4 graded stakes races with mostly large fields: the Carry Back G3 for 3yo, Azalea G3 for 3f, Smile Sprint G2 for 3up, and the headliner Princess Rooney G1 for 3up fm.

Though not the featured race, the Smile Sprint is perhaps the most exciting prospect, with an initial field of 15 set for now. Competitors include Justin Phillip, Trinniberg, Jackson Bend, Close it Out, Trickmeister, and Swagger Jack. I can imagine some interesting outcomes to that one. There are also two listed stakes on the card.

But the racing doesn’t end there! Betfair will be running the Hollywood Gold Cup G1 and Royal Heroine Mile G2 on Saturday. Monmouth will have the United Nations G1 and Salvator Mile G3. Then Evangeline Downs will hold Louisiana Legends night with 8 $100k stakes races.

The stakes racing continues on Sunday, highlighted by 4 graded stakes races at Woodbine. The featured race will be the $1 million Canadian dollar Queen’s Plate for 3yo Canadian bred going 10f. There are multiple times that we’ve on some nice 4-5 digit payouts on that day. Free grid? Perhaps.
