Whitney, Test, Vanderbilt, Hirsch, WV Derby, all on Saturday!
We had some great racing in the north Atlantic last weekend, with Bayern opening up to win the Haskell, and Wicked Strong getting by Tonalist, who we accurately predicted would win the Belmont this year, in the Jim Dandy.
Believe it or not, this weekend is at least as great, with Saratoga holding a monstrous Saturday card with 3 Grade 1 races; the Vanderbilt, Test, and Whitney. There are 29 horses entered in the 3 G1 events and 23 entered in two other stakes events on Saturday.
The headline Whitney draws a nice crowd because of its tiny purse of just $1.5 million. The field is basically a who’s who of horses who won or finished in the money of recent Triple Crown races. The horse that we accurately predicted as the Belmont winner last year, Palace Malice, is the favorite.
We might as well list the entire field because it is very impressive.

On paper, the pace sets up perfectly for the front runners since there are only 3 and none of them are blazing speedsters. It’s definitely Palace Malice’s race to lose but wouldn’t be surprising if Moreno or Itsmyluckyday gets out front and never concedes the lead.

There are other great races around the country, including the card at Mountaineer which has 9 stakes races worth at least $100k topped by the G2 West Virginia Derby with a $750k purse. Prairie Meadows has a half dozen stakes races in the $70-85k range.
Louisiana Downs will hold 9 different stakes races on Saturday including the Super Derby Prelude for 3yo’s, and there is the G1 Clement Hirsch Handicap at Del Mar, which will follow up with the G2 Best Pal Stakes on Sunday.
Today, Del Mar runs the most expensive race of the day with the $200k Real Good Deal Stakes for 3yo’s going 7f on the polytrack. Del Mar also has a Pick 6 carryover of $240k today, making it a bet well worth playing. We’ll go ahead and throw you a free grid for that as well to make sure you don’t miss out on that action.
