Mohaymen rolls to victory again in Fountain of Youth

Saturday, February 27
Gulfstream Park

Mohaymen proved worthy of his 2-5 odds, rolling to a relatively easy win again in the Fountain of Youth G2 over 8.5f at Gulfstream Park, laying waste to 5 foes brave enough to run against him.

The $2.2 million Keeneland sale lived up to his billing yet again. Off a bit slow, he rated in 3rd by the half mile, then challenged for the lead around the last turn, taking the lead by stretch time.

This makes 5 wins in 5 lifetime starts for the Tapit colt, including 4 straight G2 wins that seem to be getting easier every time.

Previously undefeated Awesome Banner set an honest pace with fractions of 23.52 and 47.02 before Zulu took over for a 3/4 of 1.11.02, taking the inside track into the stretch.

After that, Mohaymen challenged him onto the turn and took the lead by stretch time. He was invincible after that, just running away with it again.

Fellowship also took control of 3rd coming into the stretch, and owned it as we predicted. The 2nd longest shot in the field at 22-1, he was also the only closer, and closed well to hold 3rd.

It was a solid performance for Zulu at his first 2 turn attempts in his 3rd lifetime start, but he was simply not enough for Mohaymen.

Awesome Banner was a disappoinment, fading after 3/4, and Awesome Speed only showed enough speed to hang on for 4th of 6 at the end. Zulu was the only other that moved forward in this race.

Mohaymen will undoubtedly be at the #1 spot in everyone’s list this week, if he wasn’t already, except for ours. Nyquist will stay on top until proven otherwise.

The two may actually face off in the Florida Derby according to what we’re hearing from O’neill. Wouldn’t that be a heck of a race?
