Cupid looked strong after breaking his maiden in 3rd try in February by 5 lengths, coming in to the Rebel Stakes with one win and 3-1 odds. He set some legit fractions and never looked back at the rest of the pack, getting another Derby ticket for Baffert.

Whitmore, Creator, and Cherry Wine closed from the rear pack for 2nd, 3rd and 4th, picking up some valuable Kentucky Derby points. Most of those will show up in a later prep to get enough points to qualify. Cupid changed leads in mid stretch to hold off a great charge by Whitmore.

Suddenbreakingnews was the big disappointment, slightly favored at 5-2 coming in after his win in the Southwest G3, where he came from 13 horses back to beat Whitmore who finished 2nd in that prep as well. Despite a similar pace, he didn’t find the same late stride and finished 5th.
