Kentucky Derby and Preakness champion California Chrome avenged his 2nd place finish in last year’s Dubai World Cup by destroying this year’s field by about 4 lengths as the even money favorite.

Forced wide around all the turns, the Lucky Pulpit needed no luck, accelerating out of the far turn for a dominating victory under Victor Espinoza for Art Sherman and California Chrome LLC.

Sheikh Al Maktoum’s Mubtaahij had his best finish since winning last year’s UAE Derby, gutsily holding on for 2nd at 18-1 after pressing the pace early along with the winner.

Mike Pegram’s Hoppertunity, the five year old who has never finished off the board in any career race, maintained that status by finishing 3rd at 13-1 with a good late run.

The rest of the American contingent didn’t fare so well, as Keen Ice and Frosted were never able to keep up or close on the pace. Candy Boy was never a factor either. Video below.

Chrome’s owner Harry Martin was heard telling the reporter the “money doesn’t matter,” after winning the $6 million prize. If so, we kindly ask that he donate some of that money to us. He can keep the trophy.

He also outlined a plan to continue running the horse through next year, now that it’s North America’s highest earnings horse, there are two to catch in Japan.
