Laoban looked to add to his 22 Kentucky Derby points in the Blue Grass G1 stakes, and set out with swift fractions trying to go gate to wire. In the end, he held on for 4th giving him 32 points along with 3 others, which probably will not get him in. Due to earnings, he’s ranked last of the 4, at 21 points.
.
It was Brody’s Cause who finally got the pace he wanted, registering his first win since October in the Breeders’ Futurity, also at Keeneland. It was also his first Derby points earned since the BC Juvenile, also in October, before he threw in a clunker in the Tampa Bay Derby.

But the Giant’s Causeway colt was on his game on Saturday, taking advantage of the large field and fast fractions, rating in 11th then bursting into the lead in early stretch. My Man Sam nipped Cherry Wine at the wire for 2nd, as they both closed from further back and perhaps waited too long to move. All 3 were in the 4-1 to 5-1 range, as the only single digits in the 14 horse field besides the favorite.
.
The favorite was Zulu at 2-1, looking to add to his 20 KD points to get into the first Triple Crown race, but he will not. He was never much of a factor in the race, rating in 5th for the first Âľ then fading to 12th. 10-1 Donegal Moon also had great expectations at 10-1 but failed to earn and KD points.
.
It was the first Derby points for My Man Sam, in his first stakes race, but with 40 points he will likely gain entry. Unfortunately, Cherry Wine’s great effort but failure to gain 2nd leaves him with only 25, which won’t be enough.
.
The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers were 1st, 2nd, and 4th in LP according to the Grid, and all were S0 type plodders in a field with 4 legit front running types, who battled for the early lead, including Zulu, who never made the lead. It was a great closers’ race. Video below.
