Exaggerator gets revenge on Nyquist in Preakness

.
Saturday, May 21
Pimlico, Baltimore, Md
.
Exaggerator turned the tables on Nyquist in the Preakness Stakes, taking command early in the stretch and powering away for the victory. It was obvious that he not only liked the muddy track, but also enjoyed a torrid pace set by co-pace setters Nyquist and Uncle Lino, who dueled for the lead most of the race.
.
Nyquist and Uncle Lino started the battle early, setting blistering fractions of 22.38 for the 1st quarter mile and 46.56 for the half, and a solid 1.11.97 for 3/4. Then things started to fall apart for Uncle Lino, who couldn’t keep up, but Nyquist went on for the stretch battle.

Then came Exaggerator with his patented closing move, passing Nyquist early in the stretch and not looking back. Nyquist still wasn’t done however, angling back out to try and catch the leader even after being passed. The day belonged to Exaggerator, finally beating Nyquist in their 5th attempt.
.
Cherry Wine delivered a nice closing move and barely caught Nyquist at the wire for 2nd. Stradivari and Lani also closed well for 4th and 5th.
.
It’s believed to be the first brother trainer/jockey duo to win the Preakness. The Triple Crown races are no stranger to jockey Kent Desormeaux, who began his excellent career in Maryland and won the Preakness twice before this. Trainer Keith, however, was participating in his first Preakness ever.
.
Exaggerator becomes only the 3rd Kentucky Derby runner up in the past 55 years to win the Preakness, and the 1st since 1993. Nyquist joins a group of 10 Derby champs in the last 20 years that didn’t also win the Preakness.
.
This is still good for horse racing, as these two great horses will continue to do battle throughout the year. Nyquist still has the last laugh for now, topping $5 million in earnings with the 3rd place finish. It’s the fastest any American horse has ever accumulated that many dollars. Exaggerator approaches $3 million with the win.
