Charles Town Oaks, Classic, 7 Stakes Races Precap, Tonight!

.

Friday, August 27, 2020.   Charles Town has a big race day starting at 5PM ET, a 12 race card featuring the G3 Oaks and G2 Classic, along with 5 other exciting stakes races for various categories.  Racing should continue thru 11PM unless severe weather gets in the way.

.

The bad news is that a tropical storm is headed over from Nashville, and thunderstorms are expected in the area tonight.  The good news is that the big storm itself will be arriving overnight and most of the damage will be done tomorrow, after all the stakes racing is over.

.

In case you’re wondering what to do on a beautiful Friday afternoon, and your favorite hangout is closed, or it’s too dangerous to go out at night, and pro sports crybabies aren’t playing anymore, then tune in to some great racing, pour yourself a beverage, make some nachos, and enjoy the sport of kings.

.

A nice race card at sunny Saratoga is going on this afternoon, featuring the G3 Lake George stakes at 5:45ET.  Gulfstream and Woodbine have their usual racing, then Del Mar begins their afternoon card also at 5ET featuring a 5 filly and mare stakes race.  There’s plenty of racing to keep you busy.

.

Let’s break down the races at Charles Town beforehand so you can have a clue what’s going on before post time.  It’s impossible to know exactly what the weather will do or how the track will play at this point, so that is something to watch as the card unfolds.  First get the Friday Free Grid here to follow along.

.

The Charles Town Classic G2 at 10:18PM features 10 horses 3 and up going 9f.  The first thing you should do in any race is identify the speed.  There’s not much in this one, just the two E8’s Sleepy Eyes Todd and Runnin’toluvya, who is actually the defending champion.  However, last April he was on a 3 stakes race win streak and was able to sit on a moderate pace to pull off that upset.

That won’t happen with Sleepy Eyes Todd also on the pace, and he is the more likely long shot special to win this one, but not if they get into a heated pace dispute.  If they take their time up front, Mr. Money will be right up there with them. However, he’s not in the dominant form he was last year while winning 4 straight graded stakes.

Edging them all out for the top EP rating in the Grid, meaning on average he runs with the fastest early speed, is Mo Don’t Know.  In his 10f stakes races, he finished 2nd and won last out, so 9f is not a problem for this gelding.  With the great running style of P5 and not too much speed up front, this is your official top long shot special for the Classic at 15-1.

The ML favorite is Math Wizard, coming off a strong 2nd in the Monmouth Cup, but his best finish in 3 races before that and after his last win, was 5th.  So statistics say he’ll probably bounce again.

War Story could end up being the favorite and rightfully so, with top LP and Power, but he hasn’t raced since his 3rd place in the Pegasus World Cup in January, so that’s another vulnerable favorite.

3rd ML choice Multiplier is only off a two month layoff could be primed for big run here.  Late runners Forewarned and Tenfold are solid at this distance but would like more speed up front.

Here’s the initial prediction with ML odds:

3- Mo Don’t Know 15-1

7- Sleepy Eyes Todd 10-1

10- Multiplier 9-2

9- War Story 4-1

2- Tenfold 5-1

6- Mr. Money 6-1

.

Other first glance long shot specials.

Fly on Angel in the Oaks.

Arthur’s Hope and Winds of change in the Russell Rd.

.

For the rest of the races, use the Grid now that I’ve shown you how, and pay attention to how the track plays and any bias that develops throughout the evening, and watch out for T-storms that can affect how the track runs.  Good luck!

Down and Dirty Definitive Derby Dozen +1– (Semi) Final Version Late August

.

Wednesday, April 26, 2020.  The long awaited (almost) final and Definitive Derby Dozen is here. Normally it’s the Double Dozen but the field has finally narrowed down to 21 after the year long battle of attrition.  In the last Dozen 2 months ago, even after the removal of Nadal and Charlatan, there were still 66 on the Derby points list to narrow down.

.

The good news is that after the 8 month battle of attrition this year, the cream has risen to the top, while the fragile have been taken off the trail.  It’s fairly obvious who the top 5 or 6 contenders are, and in fact 3 of them are the same as the last Dozen.  But other contenders have emerged, and we already did the dirty work of ranking all them for you.

.

Just in the past week we saw two more withdraw consideration.  Pneumatic is out, but Asmussen picked up a contender with Max Player.  Swiss Skydiver will be running in the Oaks, as Kenny knows she would be running for 3rd at best in the Derby. But it looks like if all goes well in the Oaks, he may pull a Rachel Alexandra with her and head to Pimlico next.

.

The Derby Grid as usual, has essentially identified 4-5 key horses that you will want to use in your exotics:  Tiz the Law, Art Collector, Honor AP, Max Player and NY Traffic.

.

Here are the top 13 horses going into the Derby 10 days out.  Full explanation below the sortable table.

.

TIZ THE LAW.  If he’s not #1 on any other rankings you’re looking at, burn the piece of paper you saw it on and block the site from all your browsers, including the one on your phone. He’s dominated all 4 races this year, adding 3 G1 wins to one he got last year.  His only subpar race is still one that most in this field would be proud of, a narrow 3rd in a G3 at Churchill last year.  The only chink in his armor thus may be the sloppy sealed track that he had trouble tractioning on that day.

Tiz The Law was alone again at the end of the 2020 Travers, as he was in other G1’s this year.

.

ART COLLECTOR.  Normally a horse that doesn’t run in their first stakes race until July would never appear on this list, because the Derby would have already been run.  But this is no normal Derby year obviously.  The fact is he’s dominated 5 straight races, dating back to a sloppy track win at Churchill last year.  This includes the G2 Blue Grass and Ellis Park Derby, which was invented to issue 50 Derby points which he happily collected.  No obvious chinks in his armor, has 2nd in Power, Stamina and LP , but he hasn’t faced G1 competition yet.

.

HONOR A.P.  The most lightly raced top September Derby contender of all time, he still only has 5 lifetime races.  But they were all quality races, with 3 runnerup’s and 2 wins including the G1 Santa Anita Derby, where he made use of a fast pace up front to deliver a devastating closing move.  The fact that he’s been used sparingly is likely because he’s the 3rd most expensive horse in the field, sold as a yearling for $850 grand.  So now it’s time to start paying off that credit card.

.

AUTHENTIC.  Again with only 5 lifetime races, 4 this year, and again all quality races, a 2nd and 4 wins including the Haskell last out.  He did hold off Honor AP in the San Felipe but suffered from a speed duel in the SA Derby and folded but still held 2nd.  Unfortunately for him, this Derby field looks like it contains a lot of speed and it will be difficult for the frontrunner to hold up at 10f.  The 5th most expensive colt in the field, it’s also time for him to provide some ROI.

.

NY TRAFFIC.  5th in Derby points, 5th in the Derby Grid, and 5th in the Dozen.  The only historical scores he missed out on in the Grid were that he’s not a graded stakes winner and his last prep was 7 weeks out.  However, he did finish 2nd in 3 straight graded races, including the G1 Haskell where he only lost by a nose after bearing down on Authentic towards the wire.  For an E8, he holds up well in deep stretch, including the 9.5f Louisiana Derby where he went 2nd gate to wire.  Like Authentic, he may be compromised by all the projected speed in this field.

.

SOLE VOLANTE.  Stop gasping.  Yes he’s 18th in points, finished 6th in the Belmont, and doesn’t appear on anyone else’s rankings, but that’s because they don’t have the Grid.  If one bad race defined a career, then people wouldn’t know the names Real Quiet or Charismatic from Triple Crowns past. The fact is he has top LP in the Grid, earning that distinction with 3 straight excellent closing moves before the Belmont. He may have just not been able to get footing in the Big Sandy.  But top LP counts for a LOT in the Derby.  Put it this way, last year’s top two LP were Maximum Security and Country House, in that order.  Ring a bell?

.

CARACARO. Again, stop with the gasping.  At least he’s top 10 in Derby points.  Besides that, the Grid has him at top 5 in Power, and he got the 2nd best last-out Grid PF  in the field, and 5th best PF overall.  And that PF was achieved in the 10f Travers, a perfectly distanced prep for the Derby.  In that 4th career race, he stayed on very well to get 2nd behind Tiz the Law.  Not a household name trainer, but a competent one and this trainee has an excellent pedigree for classic racing.  He’s still improving and could peak at just the right time.

.

DR POST.  The 4th most expensive horse in the field has also been spared a bit this year, with only 5 career races thus far.  In the last two he followed up a stakes win with 2nd and 3rd in the two G1s at Belmont and Haskell.  No excuses, but he only lost to 3 horses which are all in the top 5 on this list. The Grid has him 4th in Power, 3rd in LP and Stamina.  It’s hard to argue with that, and with the speed in this race and trainer Todd Pletcher, he could be sitting on a huge one here.

.

MAX PLAYER.  I’ve liked this one all year, and he’s very similar to DR POST in many ways.  Only 5 starts, but the in the last 3 he followed up a G3 win with 3rd in the Belmont and Travers G1s.  He has a similar late running style and is 7th in Power, Stamina, and LP.  That was all under trainer Linda Rice, and now he’s in the care of Steve Asmussen, selected likely for his vast Triple Crown experience.  He could also be sitting on a big race, and the Derby Grid critical criteria marked him as one of the top 4 key horses.

.

THOUSAND WORDS.  At last we get to the most expensive horse in the field, he sold at Keeneland as a yearling for $1mil (plus tax I think.)  Then sent directly to the Baffert barn, where he has been inconsistent, and his two biggest wins were in December and Feb.  Since then he’s had only 1 victory in 4 races, going gate to wire in the Shared Belief.  It’s true he beat Honor AP in that race, but setting a slow pace up front was the key.  It’s hard to envision him winning the roses but the million dollar baby needs to start earning some real money.

.

RUSHIE.  A late bloomer, in his last two, he only lost to 3 of the top 5 on his list, and the #1 filly on the continent who we already discussed. He’s probably not on anyone else’s top anything list, but I see some potential here for Mike Mccarthy.  He has yet to race on a muddy track, but his siblings have the top win % on such a surface, so if it rains on Derby day, watch out for this one and double down. He’s the only non-early nominee left, so they would have to fork over $45 large to enter, but a top 5 finish would double that.

.

MONEY MOVES.  Normally, an optional claimer with only 3 career races and no stakes experience would never make this list, but as said, this is no normal year.  The fact is, this is the 2nd most expensive horse in the field at $975k, and he’s put up big efforts for Todd in all 3, winning 2 and missing by a neck while closing in at 9f last out at Saratoga.  If he wins the Derby, all remaining “rules” of Derby champs will have been broken.  I think he’s too green to win but he could turn some heads on race day if he actually draws in. Right now he’s the first alternate.

.

SHIRL’S SPEIGHT.  Now a 2 race horse on the list? With no Derby points, he’s still in the field as of now at #20 due to a graded stakes win at Woodbine.  Roger Attfield is a top Canadian trainer and this one has a great pedigree. He could freak out first time on dirt and possibly even hit the top 5.

.

If the horse didn’t make the above list, it’s because I just can’t see them winning at all and only a very small chance to hit the board.  Café Pharoah would be somewhere near the top 5 but I assume he’s not shipping from Japan or I would have heard about it by now. Stay tuned to Kentucky Derby Central on  the menu link for more great articles and analysis. Good luck!

Monmouth Sat.Aug.15: Pegasus Stakes Precap: Last chance to Run for Roses; Derby Scenario

.

Saturday, August 15, 2020.  Monmouth Park is hosting a last chance race to Run for the Roses next month, the Pegasus Stakes.  No, it’s not the $1 Million race in January at Gulfstream, but it does offer 20 points to the winner to help a Kentucky Derby ticket, and 8-4-2 for the also rans.

.

Monmouth Park

.

As you can see from the Kentucky Derby Points standings here, it takes more than 20 points to get into this year’s contest, as the top 20 all have at least 30 points, and that doesn’t include the Japanese contender Café Pharoah who will likely ship over to contest it, and ranked #5 in our last Derby Dozen.

.

So it happens that the two morning line favorites both have Derby points already, and both need some more points to run for roses.  Favorite Pneumatic who finished a strong 4th in the Belmont Stakes, could get in with 2nd but definitely with a win.  Jesus’ Team needs a win here to get in.  Others are running for purse money.

.

But this will be no easy contest.  Mid-Atlantic power trainer Michael Pino brings in Arkaan who will be going 2 turns for the first time but has the 2nd highest PF in the field.  As Seen On TV has the highest PF in the field but needs to return to that form after an awful Florida Derby in March.

.

Super John and Skyscanner have enough class to hit the board, but it’s unlikely they can beat both of the favorites.  Plus there’s the fact that Steve Asmussen doesn’t have a Derby contender this year (gasp) unless Pneumatic gets in, so he’ll be primed and ready.  And he has top LP in the Grid.

.

Here are the picks for today’s Pegasus:

5 Pneumatic
8 Jesus’ Team
6 Arkaan
4 Super John
1 Skyscanner

.

There are 11 races on the card, so you’ll want to get the free Grid provided today on the link below to make your own picks.  But you can use our expert picks here as a guide and pay special attention to the long shot specials denoted by LSS.  Big money can and has been won on those.  All remaining picks will be posted by 2PM.

Saratoga Sat.Aug.8: Travers Day is Here! Precap of Pick 6 and Stakes

.

Saturday, August 8.  Saratoga is having its historically biggest race day of the year today, with no fans in the stands, which is quite a strange spectacle.  The Travers G1 “Midsummer Derby” is the featured race, preceded by the Test G1 and several other graded stakes.

.

This also the last 100 point prep race for the Kentucky Derby, also an unusual thing to say since it has never preceded the Derby before in history.  So a ticket to run for the roses is possible for those who don’t already have one.  The Ellis Derby worth 50 points tomorrow could also offer a berth.

.

The stakes racing begins with race 7, the Ballerina G1 at 3:42PM ET.  The beginning of the almost all stakes Empire Pick 6, a jackpot bet with a carryover of over $1.1 million today, will begin the race before that at 3:02PM with a turf MSW for 2yo’s, the only non-stakes race in the sequence. We’ll start with the Travers and work backwards.

The Pick 6 sequence:

R6 3:02ET 8.5fT MSW 2 YO 72000 PICK6
R7 3:42ET 7f D Balrina-G1 3 UP FM
R8 4:22ET 5.5f T Troy-G3 4 UP
R9 5:02ET 12f t Waya-G3 4 UP FM
R10 5:39ET 7f D Test-G1 3 YO F
R11 6:15ET 10f D Travers-G1 3 YO

.

The Travers features heavy KD favorite Tiz The Law, who already set an incredible new record with his Belmont Stakes win, racking up a total of 272 Derby points.  The Constitution colt trained by Barclay Tagg looks to add another G1 win, of which he already has 3, 2 of which were in NY state.

.

Tiz the Law ran away from the Belmont Stakes 2020 field June 20, as he did in the Florida Derby and Champagne.

.

By contrast, 2nd choice Uncle Chuck has only 20 points and will need to finish in the money today to assure his Derby ticket.  Of course it will only be his 3rd career race and 2nd stakes race, but Bob Baffert has the Uncle Mo colt looking strong right now.

There are 5 others in the race, none of which have looked capable as of yet to take on the top two.  But you know how 3yo’s are, they can rapidly improve in the blink of a month. I almost forgot, grab the free Grid here to follow along.

The top non chalk to look out for is Max Player, who improved yet again in his 4th race, getting 3rd in the Belmont for Linda Rice.  He’s the 2nd best late runner in the Grid, and already has a Derby ticket.

Country Grammer also had his best career effort last out for Chad Brown, winning the Peter Pan at Belmont, and the Grid says he’s the 3rd best late runner, and also has his Derby ticket stamped.

Caracaro looked great in his first stakes race and 3rd career start for Gustavo Delgado, taking the lead in the Peter Pan and dueling down the line before folding to Country Grammer.  He needs some points today.

So it looks like this year’s edition of the Travers will finish in morning line order or somewhere thereabouts.  An exciting stretch duel between the two favorites is highly likely.

.

The Test G1 is Gamine’s to win or lose, so Baffert could very well sweep the late G1’s.  The only filly in the short field of 5 that can keep up is Venetian Harbor, the fastest in the field and who will benefit from the race only being 7f.  The others will hope for some kind of speed duel up front and pick up the remains.

.

Race 9 is the Waya G3, another short field of only 6 after scratches, but there are a surprising amount of possibilities.  Because of the lack of early speed, the two front runners Beau Belle and Fools Gold could win or hold on at good odds.

The two late closing favorites will have difficulty running their usual game with the lack of early speed.  Olympic Games looks like the best in this spot, with her tactical pace pressing style and good late kick.

.

The Troy G3 in race 8 looks open for the field of 7 going only 5.5 on the turf, but the favored Imprimis with top power will be tough to beat, and the other chalk looks good too  American Sailor looks like the only good long shot, with top EP.

.

The Ballerina G1 has a field of 7 talented fillies going 7f. ML favorite Bellafina has an appropriate name for this race and will be hard to beat, and the same exact thing can be said of the 3rd choice Come Dancing.  2nd choice Serengeti Empress will benefit cutting back to 7f.

But we’re about long shots here, and the Grid says Victim of Love had the best PF last out in winning the Vagrancy G3 at Belmont, staying ahead of a late charge by Come Dancing.  No way 15-1 holds up.

.

Sorry for the MSW race 6 you’re on your own. As usual, you can get the Grid for all the major races and tracks right here.  It’s a great time to get a 1 month subscription to get you thru the Kentucky Derby, or 2 months to get by the Preakness.

Woodbine Sat. July 25 Precap: Big 3yo Day with G3’s Marine and Selene Stakes

.

Saturday, July 25.  Woodbine race track is hosting a big day for 3yo’s racing in Canada today, including the Grade 3 Marine Stakes for three year olds and the corresponding Selene, also G3, for 3yo fillies.  10 races on the card with about 100 horses running after scratches makes for a competitive race day.

.

Woodbine Race Track

.

The Marine G3 at about 2PM ET has a short but serious field of 3yo’s, oddly the majority of which are geldings, going 8.5f.  The favorite Shirl’s Speight has 1 race under his belt, a win at 7f on turf, so this will be his first time at a mile and first on polytrack, not exactly a lock for trainer Roger Attfield.  Grab today’s Grid here to follow along.

.

The top Power horse according to the Grid is Untitled at 9-2 ML, who ran 2nd in the Gotham G3 earlier this year for Mark Casse and registered the top PF of 95 after that.  He was solid in his first polytrack race last out finishing 2nd in the Woodstock stakes at 6f, a few lengths ahead of gelding Lookinatamiracle who is 6-1 ML.

.

Lucky Curlin 3-1 will also take a lot of action after finally breaking maiden last out at a Woodbine 7f OCM for Mark Casse, and has top LP in the Grid.  So the 3 colts are the top choices.  But we need to mention Dotted Line at 8-1 who has won multiple stakes at Woodbine, and Glorious Tribute, 3rd in the Queenston Stakes at WO last out, to give you some good long shots in the exotics.

.

The Selene G3 has a pair of deserving virtual co-favorited fillies.  Owlette has the top PF registered last out in one of her three 6f stakes wins here at Woodbine for Wesley Ward, sandwiching a 2nd place effort at 8.5f.  Merveilleux looked just like her name last out winning an allowance after 2 runner-up efforts in 8.5f stakes here for Kevin Attard.

.

My 3rd choice is Livin In The Six, who I refused to believe will go off anywhere near 15-1 after an good performance breaking maiden last out at 6f on turf, following her initial maiden voyage in which she got boxed up in the stretch.  Michael Depaulo is not a household name and nor is sire Society’s Chairman, but that’s what long shots are about.

.

Unfortunately these 3 great fillies will have to contend with a triplet of Mark Casse fillies, at least one of which will hit the board.  The most likely is probably 3rd ML choice American Tap who has finished ITM in her past 4 races after a poor initial maiden trip.

.

Here are the expert picks for the full race card.

Indiana Downs Oaks and Derby Today. 5 Stakes Races in late afternoon.

.

Wednesday, July 8, 2020.  Indiana Downs is dominating the stakes scenes today with 5 stakes races including two Grade 3’s, the Indiana Derby and Oaks.  The stakes racing begins at 5:38ET and continues until the Indiana Derby scheduled for 7:45ET.  12 races are on the great midweek card.

.

In the Derby, most of the action will be going to the two favorites. Winning Impression last out finished 4th in Arkansas Derby 1, 8 lengths behind Charlatan, and Major Fed who had a miserable Matt Winn but before that finished 4th in the Louisiana Derby and 2nd in the Risen Star.  Shared Sense is also low on the morning line and looks good going into his first graded race.

.

Enough of the chalk, let’s talk some long shots.  Earner is 8-1 ML but that could go down since he has put up good performances in all 3 of his races.  This will be his first stakes race but he has beaten another in the field, Extraordinary who also has some good performances.

.

Necker Island got 5th in the Matt Winn and finished just a couple lengths back to Shared Sense last out. He has consistent speed but hangs up in the stretch.  No Getting Over Me is also worth mentioning and has a chance to hit the board at good odds.

.

In the Oaks, Shedaresthedevil is the graded stakes winner of the field and will be the favorite accordingly.  But this field is wide open and very competitive, so it’s a good one to take your changes on long shots like Fire Coral, Alandra, Spartanka, and Miss T Too.

.

Get the Grid here for Indiana today and make your picks for all the late races.

Wednesday, July 8, 2020. Keeneland has its long awaited opening day in July after canceling its spring meet this year.  A healthy 9 race card with over 90 horses competing is on the docket. The dirt is fast and the turf is good, and there is a very slight chance of rain today, unlike the rest of the week.
