Oaklawn Park Jan.25- Smarty Jones Stakes and 4 MSW’s for 3yos.

.
Friday, January 25. Oaklawn Park is getting the jump on stakes racing this weekend with the Smarty Jones Stakes worth $150k for 3yo’s attempting to get on the Triple Crown Trail. It is a Kentucky Derby Points Race worth 10-4-2-1 as all the other Derby Prep Races have been so far.
.

Oaklawn Race Track

Oaklawn Race Track

.
The two to beat in this race are the 1st and 2nd place finishers in the Springboard Mile, another ungraded prep race that was worth $400k and 10 points. Long Range Toddy, who ran near the pace, headed out Bankit who closed from last place halfway through. Both are trained by Steve Asmussen, the perennial top trainer at Oaklawn.
.
The morning line favorite however, is Gray Attempt, making his first attempt at a distance greater than 6.5f. Last out he won the Sugar Bowl Stakes, beating Manny Wah and Hog Creek Hustle who recently also finished in the money the Lecomte G3.
.
Super Steed finished 7 back in 4th in the Sugar Bowl, and would probably prefer a sloppy track like he had at Churchill where he beat Boldor, also in this race, by 6 for the win.
.
Six Shooter looked good going into the Springboard but finished last for whatever reason. But he rebounded already with a nice win in the Big Drama $75k at Delta 3 weeks ago.
.
Jack Van Berg’s first 2 races were stakes contests and he almost won the 2nd, then got his maiden next out. Last out he got whipped by Super Steed and Bolor in an OC75n1x on a sloppy track. Sleepy Eyes Todd broke his maiden first out is a big long shot here.
.
The sleeper that I like is Forloveofcountry at 12-1 ml. After 3 straight turf races in which he did not make any improvement in form, he switched to dirt and had an impressive win on a sloppy track OC75n1x at a mile.
.
There are 4 MSW’s for 3yos, 2 for fillies and 2 for all, on the card as well so trainers can gauge how their 3yo’s measure up.

Doug’s Double Derby Dozen Jan.24 2019- First of the Year!

.
January 24, 2019. The first Derby Double Dozen of the year is finally released, giving you a full two dozen horses to choose from and some rationale for the ranking. The top 5 may look like a who’s who of the top finishers in the BC Juvenile. Well, it is, but there are 2 main reasons for that. 1. Those top 5 have beaten the competition they’ve faced elsewhere, with one exception. 2. The BC Juvenile having been at Churchill Downs is a big factor for a Kentucky Derby hopeful.
.
Kentucky Derby Central
.
In fact, here’s an impact value you won’t get elsewhere. The last 2 Breeders Cup Juvenile Champions where the BC was run in Kentucky (including Keeneland), who actually ran in the Kentucky Derby, both won the Derby. The other 3 finished 3rd, 8th, and 10th. The 4 other champs did not actually run for the roses, including Uncle Mo, who was a heavy favorite before scratching, and had his son Nyquist win it instead. So that’s 2 winners straight, and a 3rd out of the 5 that actually participated. Not bad.
.

Game Winner of the BC Juvenile November 2 2018 Churchill Downs

Game Winner of the BC Juvenile November 2 2018 Churchill Downs

.
1. Game Winner has to prove he can be beaten by anyone before he gets demoted. Probably a unanimous number one by anyone with horse sense, he won 3 Grade 1 races as a 2yo including the BCJ. He has yet to race this year but is looking like another Baffert juggernaut. You wouldn’t have been wrong to bet him in the futures pool 1 because his final odds of 5-1 may actually go down from there. Winning the BCJ at Churchill is a big indicator for a great Derby performance. (Further breakdown below the chart)
.

.
2. Signalman has not done much wrong, losing only to Knicks Go in the Breeders Futurity and BCJ, and to Game Winner of course. He rebounded for a big win 3 weeks later in the KYJC on the sloppy sealed track, so he has no issues with two extreme variations of Churchill so far. He is Kenny McPeek’s best Derby hope in a while and will probably appear in either the Risen Star or Southwest next.
.
3. Knicks Go gets a partial pass for his only bad race, the Kentucky Jockey Club G2. It is possible that he didn’t like the sloppy sealed track that day, because he obviously did like Churchill Downs 3 weeks before that on a fast track. It’s also possible it was too much too soon. After the Breeders’ Futurity win on Oct.6, then the 2nd place BC Juvenile on Nov.2, he was again on the track for the KYJC G2 and fell flat after ¾ mile. Nonetheless, there is a chink in his armor somewhere, and Churchill Downs is very often an off-track on Kentucky Derby day.
.
4. Mr. Money was sent straight to the BCJ after breaking his maiden at Churchill and finished an respectable 4th, although a good 6 lengths behind 3rd place Signalman. Since there are no points races in Kentucky until mid march, like other Kentucky based trainers, Bret Calhoun will probably ship him south into the Risen Star or Southwest.
.
5. Gunmetal Gray may have finished well behind the top 3 on this list in the BCJ, but he was probably way too far back to ever win it. Running from last place at the start, he was still 2nd to last after ¾ mile and made a big run for 5th. He then returned home to SoCal and had no problem going from last to first to win the Sham G3 to open the year on Jan.5.
.
6. Improbable is very probable to run in the Kentucky Derby, and as a Baffert’s #2 horse, don’t misunderestimate him. He blew away the field in the Los Alamitos Cashcall Futurity, beating his other stablemate Mucho Gusto by 5 lengths and remaining undefeated. Last year Baffert’s #2 became a Triple Crown winner. Baffert usually splits up his top 2 horses, keeping one at home in SoCal and shipping one to the southeast to run a Southwest/Rebel prep track, so I’m predicting he’s probable to appear at Oaklawn or Fairgrounds soon.
.
7. Maximus Mischief did not participate in the Kentucky juvenile scene last year, but remained in the northeast, where he is now 3 for 3 after the Remsen G2 win in December. It’s hard to gauge how good he is because his opponents haven’t run against any valid opponents either. But he’s an undefeated winner of a points race.
.
8. War of Will looked impressive in winning the Lecomte G3 by 4 lengths against some marginal competition, namely Sugar Bowl Stakes 2nd and 3rd place finishers Manny Wah and Hog Creek Hustle, who also finished in the money in this race. The fractional and final times for that race are not very impressive at all, so it’s impossible to rank him any higher than this.
.
9. Long Range Toddy is currently Steve Asmussen’s top Derby mount and has now won 2 stakes races at Remington Park. Last out he headed Bankit for the win in the Springboard Mile, which is not graded but had a $400k purse, and it was a points race so he racked up his 10 points there. He is set to appear in the Smarty Jones tomorrow, Jan.25 at Oaklawn Park, and is currently the 2nd ML choice.
.
10. Instagrand has zero points and hasn’t run against the serious competition yet, but did win the Best Pal G2 last out at Del Mar, by 10 lengths. That was in August, and we hear reports that he’s having some nice workouts recently, but we need to see him race again to move him up any farther than this. Hollendorfer has 2 main options. He can run him in the San Vicente and probably win but pick up no points, or see if he’s Derby trail material and move him into the RB Lewis and start getting points.
.
11. Mucho Gusto is currently Baffert’s 3rd ranked 3yo, giving him 3 viable Derby contenders. He was 2nd place 5 lengths back to undefeated Improbable in the Los Al futurity, but still 3 lengths ahead of the rest. Before that he was 2 for 2, breaking his maiden and winning the Bob Hope G3 at Del Mar. It’s hard to tell where he’ll appear next or if he’ll tag along playing 2nd fiddle to Improbable again.
.
12. Mind Control won the Hopeful G1 at Saratoga then shipped to Kentucky for the BCJ, where he finished almost 20 lengths back in 7th. He did bobble at the start so there could be an excuse. But he returned to New York and won the Jerome against some typical nobodies that race there in the winter.

Fairgrounds Sat.Jan.19 Lecomte G3, Silverbulletday, Col Bradley, Louisiana Stakes Grid

.
Saturday, January 19. The Fairgrounds of New Orleans has a nice race card on tap today with 6 stakes races highlighted by the Lecomte G3 for 3yo’s and several other MSW’s for 3yos.
.

Fairgrounds New Orleans Racing

Fairgrounds New Orleans Racing

.
It’s an important Triple Crown Kentucky Derby Prep race day for the 3yos as the 3rd Kentucky Derby Points race of the year. The other 6 MSW’s will be used to gauge how the maidens are measuring up to those pointed to the Roses.
.
Of course the Lecomte is only worth 10-4-2-1 points, so even the winner will need points elsewhere down the road. There are some points earners in the field, but none have won a points race yet.
.
The track is rated good to start the day and the turf as soft, with the 2 non-stakes turf races moved to dirt. So there are lots of scratches, but the Lecomte still boasts a competitive field of 12.

Santa Anita Saturday La Canada & Las Cienegas G3 Racing $733 Pick 6 Carryover

.
Saturday, Jan.12. Not quite as sunny as usual Santa Anita is running graded stakes races as usual on Saturday, including the La Canada G3 for fillies and mares, and the Las Cienegas G3 for FM on the downhill turf course at 6.5f.
.

.
All other turf races have been taken off the turf, resulting in massive scratches for races 1, 4 and 7, but the main track is listed as good to start off the day.
.
The first post is scheduled for 1230PM California time and the Pick 6 will begin at about 2pm CA time. The Pick 6 Jackpot is carrying over $733K into the day, so that will easily top $1million today. Good time to get in on the action.

Santa Anita Sun.Jan.6 Santa Ynez G2 Grid

.
Sunday, January 6. Santa Anita Park is the only North American track with a graded stakes race today, hosting the Santa Ynez G2 for 3yo fillies at 7f on dirt.
.

.
The field for the Ynez is only 5 as it looks like a 2 horse race between the 2 favorites, Simon Callaghan’s Bellafina and Bob Baffert’s Mother Mother. The other 8 races average fields of 8.
.
Saturday, Santa Anita had 2 stakes races including the Sham G3 for 3yo’s going 8f, an important Kentucky Derby prep race. Baffert’s favored Coliseum, winner of his only prior race, was never in it, but his other colt did Much Better, finishing 3rd.
.
Meantime, Jerry Hollendorfer’s Gunmetal Gray made a spectacular run from last to first, wiping out the field for his first stakes win and increasing his Kentucky Derby Points to 14.

Santa Anita Weds Dec.26 Graded Stakes: Malibu, LaBrea, San Antonio, Mathis Brothers Grid.

.
Wednesday December 26.
.
It was the day after Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, except me processing the Grid for Santa Anita and handicapping the fields for some great graded stakes racing: Malibu G1, LaBrea G1, San Antonio G2, Mathis Brothers G2.
.
The featured race is the Malibu G1 with a field of 14 excellent 3yo’s going 7f. At least half the field was once on the Kentucky Derby trail earlier this year, and over half of them are shippers from the east coast.
.
Baffert’s duo includes favored McKenzie coming back from a disappointing BC Classic gallop. Stablemate Solomini ran 10th in the roses this year, and hasn’t raced since June. I’d be surprised to not see both of them in the top 4, and Solomini has good ML odds of 10-1.
.

McKinzie holds off Bolt D'oro but loses San Felipe by DQ

McKinzie holds off Bolt D’oro but loses San Felipe by DQ

.
Also surprisingly at 10-1 is Axelrod, who finished a respectable 8 lengths back in the BCC, and less than 2 lengths behind McKinzie in the PA Derby after winning two graded stakes. Copper Bullet, Ax Man, and Kanthaka appear to be the other primary contenders.
.
Prior to that is the San Antonio G2 for 3up at 8.5f. The top contender is favored Battle of Midway, who finished 3rd in the Kentucky Derby last year and finished off the year with a win in the BC Dirt Mile for Hollendorfer. He didn’t race again until August this year but is in top form after winning the Native Diver G3 last month.
.
The 2nd choice is another 4yo Dabster, who is also in top form for Baffert, finishing 2nd by a neck in the Native Diver after a 2nd place finish in the BC Marathon, very impressive for a frontrunning type horse. 3rd choice Gift Box will need to be in very top form to challenge the top 2.
.
The undercard LaBrea G1 favors Baffert’s Dream Tree and Wesley Ward’s Happy Like a Fool. These 2 will be very difficult to catch at 7f.
.
In the Mathis Brothers G2 Mile on turf, Jeff Mullins’ River Boyne looks very difficult to beat, but it’s racing so anything can happen.
.
Races 2-5 are being used for the TVG Super 5 today. Use the Grid to make your picks for all 10 races.

Los Alamitos Sat.Dec.8 Futurity and Starlet G1 Grid

.
Saturday, November 8. Los Alamitos has probably its two most important races of the year. The LosAl Caschcall Futurity G1 for 2yo and Starlet G1 for 2yof.
.

Solomini (left) seemingly got his first prep win in the 2017 LosAl Futurity after outdueling Instilled Regard (center) and McKinzie, who was awarded the win after DQ. (Benoit Photo via AP)

Solomini (left) seemingly got his first prep win in the 2017 LosAl Futurity after outdueling Instilled Regard (center) and McKinzie, who was awarded the win after DQ. (Benoit Photo via AP)

.
Keep in mind that some west coast trainers didn’t want to ship certain horses to Kentucky for the Breeders’ Cup, most likely because the horses told them they didn’t want to go there until they were ready to run for the roses.
.
Whatever the reason, these are damn good 2yo’s that are making their case for the Ky Derby or Oaks today. Not surprisingly, Improbable headlines the strong Futurity field of 6 for Baffert.
.
Was he named Improbable for the fact that it would be almost probable that Baffert could train yet another Triple Crown champion? Who knows. Also not surprisingly, the 2nd choice is Mucho Gusto, also coached by Baffert.
.
The 6 filly Starlet field is also strong and competitive, with shocker! Baffert coaching the 2 morning line favorites, Mother Mother and Chasing Yesterday.
.
OK enough talk. There are 9 races on the LosAl thoroughbred card today and 2 of them are big time 2yo races. Get the Grid below free.
