Oaklawn Handicap April 14 Arkansas Derby, Count Fleet, Northern Spur Grid

.
Saturday, April 14. Oaklawn Park has its big day of the year, featuring the Arkansas Derby, preceded by the Count Fleet, Oaklawn Handicap, and Northern Spur stakes.
.
While the Arkansas Derby is the highlight race of the day, the other stakes races will be entertaining, and we will be paying special attention to the MSW’s and Northern Spur to see how those 3yos measure up.
.
As for the Arkansas Derby, no less than 7 horses are attempting to stamp a Kentucky Derby ticket. 2 of the field of 9 already have their ticket, including the favorite Magnum Moon, and Quip, who is out of his league again, but still has his Derby ticket intact either way.
.
The most realistic shots at the Run for the Roses belong to Solomini, ranked 2nd in our top 25 and needing just a 4th place finish. Dream Baby Dream will need 2nd and Combatant 3rd for their shot at glory.
.

Magnum Moon burst on to the Triple Crown Trail with an impressive Rebel G2 win in his first stakes over Solomini and Combatant

.
Others not mentioned above will need to win the race to get into the big one the first Saturday in May. Chances of that are slim.

.
One thing has remained the same since November: Good Magic has remained #1 and Solomini #2 on our charts, as other rankings flapped around in the wind with every stakes winner. Bolt D’Oro has remained in the top 5. McKinzie is off the trail.
.
Good Magic was even #1 after his disappointing 3rd place finish in the Fountain of Youth in March. Now he has proved his 2yo form was no fluke while easily winning the G2 Blue Grass Stakes and regaining the points lead.
.

Good Magic (Curlin) won the Bluegrass Stakes (G2) at Keeneland on 4.7.2018. Jose Ortiz up, Chad Brown trainer

.
Vino Rosso put up a spectacular win in the Wood G2, passing favorite Enticed like he was standing still, to move into our top 10, and give us enough excellence for a RAN box in the Kentucky Derby, which won last year and usually does not win in consecutive years.
.
The big surprise this year is how well the young Storm Cats are doing, with 8 likely to make the Kentucky Derby field, including 4 Scat Daddy colts. Horses from Storm Cat sireline have never won the Derby, but this year could be another where a curse is broken, like most others have this century.
.
Keep in mind that these are not point rankings, which are on another page. But points are shown in order to see which horses are deficient so far, and where they need to finish in their next prep to get the required points to qualify.
.
This year the cut expected to be 42 minimum as predicted last week, and even then Lone Sailor may not make it if the Japan champion ships. That means Hofburg and Firenze Fire will likely not make the field, even though they’re better than many others that will make it, unless there are multiple withdrawals.
.
Horses in bold have another prep race scheduled before the big one.

.
April 6 2018 will mark the first day of Kentucky Derby Futures Pool 4, which will have 2 more days available with different odds before it ends on Sunday evening.
.
23 horses have individual entries in this pool, including the top 12 in points, other selected horses from the top 25 in points, and other horses that they expect to do something, like Justify. Bolt D’Oro is the slight ML favorite before Justify and Audible.
.

.
Why they included Title Ready and Mississippi? I really don’t know. Obviously I would have included horses from our top 25 Double Derby Dozen before I included random horses that finished 3rd or 4th in their last prep.
.
They have 5 horses listed that are going to the Arkansas Derby on 4/14, and only 4 of those max will make the KY Derby field. Meantime, they have only 1 listed from the Wood, and it’s likely 3 will get in.
.
You will notice in the Grid below, we’ve highlighted the horses running this weekend. Blue for Blue Grass, Red for Santa Anita, and Brown for Wood. I invented that color coding.
.
This means if you like the odds on those now, AND think they will do well in their race, you will want to bet them on Friday to get the Friday closing odds before they go down on Sat. Alternately if there is a surprise winner on Sat, the odds the field (24) will go down on Sat.
.
Or you can just wait til Sunday when most people forgot about it already and are watching the last day of the Masters. You could get some good bargains on Sunday for that reason.

Gulfstream Park Sat. March 31 Florida Derby Oaks Hardacre Mile Pan Am Honey Fox Grid

.
Saturday, March 31. Biggest day of the year at Gulfstream Park, headlined by the Florida Derby G1 and some great undercard races: the Pan Am G2, GP Oaks G2, Honey Fox G3, Gulfstream Park Hardacre Mile G2, other stakes races and great MSW’s.
.
Being that it’s today’s race and track of the week, you get today’s Gulfstream Grid for free here.
.
The Florida Derby will be responsible for sending at least 2 horses and likely more to the Kentucky Derby in May. Fountain of Youth winner Promises Fulfilled is already in the big one, but runner up Strike Power must pick up some points today. A 3rd or better will get him in.
.
Tampa Bay Derby runner up Catholic Boy also at least a 3rd place finish to get in the Ky Derby. Holy Bull winner Audible will be heavily favored but with only 10 points on the board, will need a top 2 finish to get in, which basically puts him in the same boat as the rest of the field.

Who is already in the 2018 Kentucky Derby field? And who else might be?

.
March 27, 2018. It’s about that time to take a look at who is already in this year’s Kentucky Derby field for 2018, being that it is less than 6 weeks away. Then the fun part: we’ll analyze those that could, should, or would get in.
.
Based on last year’s model, which used the same point system and assigned races as this year’s with a couple exceptions, the cutoff would be at 32 points, which means Keith Desormeaux may once again get the last horse in.
.
Last year Keith got Sonneteer with 30 points as the last horse in, but it was based on a few defections by higher ranked horses, and there were 2 other horses with 30 points that did NOT get in.
.
This year there are 6 races left worth 100-40-20-10 each, meaning that 12 new horses could automatically have at least 40 points on the board. Of course, this is unlikely, as most of them have prepped before and already have points. Plus the Lexington stakes is worth 20 for a bubble horse.
.
Indeed, at least 10 of the horses scheduled for the remaining races already have at least 30 points, and several others have at least 10. And these are the most likely horses to finish in the money in these preps. So, it will definitely not be 12 new horses. But about 6 wouldn’t be out of the question.
.
In addition, Japan and Europe will likely send at least 1 horse between them. Therefore we shall set the bar at 32 points for qualification now.
.
Refer to the current points chart as of March 26 (the next qualifying races on March 31 with the Florida and UAE Derbies) for the current standings. Full Kentucky Derby Point Standings Here

32 Lombo Michael Pender 10 $90,345
32 f-Paved Michael McCarthy 10 $60,000

.
Now, we have about 13 horses that are likely to go as long as they are healthy. Plus we can probably expect at least 1 horse from Japan or Europe. So that gives us 14. 6 more are needed, so this is where the fun starts.
.
First of all, we’ll start with the obvious 32 point bubble horse My Boy Jack. Desormeaux could wait to see if he gets in but will likely race him again in the Arkansas Derby to pick up a few more points. Keith races his horses more often than others, including this horse, running him 3 weeks back twice, albeit on turf. This one has only prepped 3 times this year and may do one more.
.
The two with 34 points are both running in 100 point preps and will likely pick up additional points of some sort in their final preps so I think we can safely say they are in if healthy.
.
Ranking the possible additional qualifiers:
.

Audible leaves the rest of the Holy Bull G2 field in the mud on Feb.3. (Leslie Martin/Coglianese photo)

Audible leaves the rest of the Holy Bull G2 field in the mud on Feb.3. (Leslie Martin/Coglianese photo)

.
1. Audible was the Holy Bull G2 winner in early February, and only has 10 points, but Pletcher is so confident in him that he will only prep him once more in the Florida Derby this weekend, which he will probably win. Plus we have him ranked #7.
.
2. Justify currently has 0 points and hasn’t run in a stakes race yet, but we have him ranked 8th, and many have him ranked higher. A top 2 finish in the Arkansas Derby will get him in, and if he continues as he has done in his first 2 this year, that will be no problem.
.
3. Strike Power has 20 points and didn’t do enough to catch a lollygagging pace in the Fountain of Youth. He’s ready for business in the Fla Derby and will need to finish top 3.
.
4. Firenze Fire has been up and down and hasn’t done enough yet, but just a 4th place finish in the Wood will likely be enough to get him in with 10 more points.
.
5. Free Drop Billy has 5 top 2 finishes, 1 third, and only 1 finish out of the money in the BC Juvenile. We expect him to pick up some points in the Blue Grass and qualify.
.
6. Gold Town will likely be the UAE Derby favorite, and has won 2 in a row at Meydan for Godolphin, who has been less enthusiastic about shipping to Kentucky in recent years, but will do so if they believe he’s good enough.
.
7. Combatant also has only 1 finish out of the top 3, a 4th place in his first maiden race. It’s unclear where he will prep next, but he is likely to pick up some points in a top 4 finish. If he finishes top 3 he’ll get in.
.
The remaining horses are on the outside looking in.
.
8. Flameaway has 30 points and will need a top 4 finish in the Blue Grass to get in. Good Magic, Blended Citizen, Free Drop Billy, Quip, and Flameaway are all fighting for those same spots, so it won’t be easy, but 4th is all he needs.
.
9. Blended Citizen was not impressive on dirt but has 3 ITM finishes since switching to polytrack, most recently getting up for a nice Jeff Ruby Steaks win. Now he will need a top 3 finish in the Blue Grass on dirt, with the above contenders, so he has his work cut out.
.
10. Catholic Boy has 14 points, 3 wins, 1 fourth, and recently a 2nd place in the Sam Davis stakes. All his marbles are in the Florida Derby where he will need to beat out at least 1 of Audible, Strike Power, and Promises Fulfilled, as well as maybe 6 or more others, for 3rd place.
.
11. Dream Baby Dream ran his first graded stakes race in the Sunland Derby G3 on March 24, and it was his most impressive yet, closing for a strong 2nd, his best lifetime finish after getting 3rd in his previous 4. He may break his maiden in the Lexington Stakes to get in.
.
12. Instilled Regard has not done much wrong, with 2 wins, 2 2nds, and a 3rd, except finish 4th in the Risen Star G2 in Feb, leaving him short on points. He will need a top 3 finish in the Santa Anita Derby to get in.

Doug’s Double Derby Dozen +1 March 26 2018

.
Monday, March 26. The Double Derby Dozen, or Doug’s top 25 Kentucky Derby contenders, has been reranked again this week after the latest action.
.
A slight shakeup at the top has been made since Noble Indy and Runaway Ghost broke through with impressive victories in their final Derby preps.
.
Regardless, most of the top 10 remained unchanged, and Good Magic and Solomini remain 1 and 2. Both will likely prove their rankings on April 7 as shown.
