Monday, April 10.  9 days ago we released a last minute Dirty Dozen for the purpose of Kentucky Derby Pool 6 which closed on April 1 at 6pm, before the Florida and Arkansas Derbies were run, and well before the Big 3 prep races of April 8: The Wood, Bluegrass, and Santa Anita Derby.

Here’s what we said and how it all unfolded.

April 1:  Florida Derby G1

Forte:  Ours (and everyone else’s) top ranked colt won the Florida Derby in a great stretch run.

Mage: 11^th in the Derby Dozen, ran an impressive 2^nd after we called on him to rebound from a bad trip.

“Mage will almost certainly be a single digit entry and may even be 2nd choice. He had an impressive debut maiden win but ran into a horrible trip after hitting the gate in the FOY.”

April 1:  Arkansas Derby G1

Angel of Empire, who we had ranked 8^th, won the Ark Derby going away.

King Russell, who was on nobody’s radar, closed for 2^nd at 58-1.

Reincarnate and Rocket Can, who we had 14^th and 10^th ranked for Kentucky, rounded out the superfecta.

Fast forward to April 8^th with the last 3 of the Big 5 Preps.

April 8:  Wood Memorial G2

Lord Miles, who was not a Pool 6 entry by any means, decided to win at 59-1.  If you saw that coming somehow, please tell me about it.

Hit Show, the Withers G3 winner and favorite, got second  whereas he was supposed to win.

Dreamlike, ranked 13^th in our last Dozen, got a strong 3^rd, only losing by a half length.

The thing about the Wood, is that it hasn’t made any noise in the Kentucky Derby for 20 years.  That was the year the top two, Empire Maker and Funny Cide, ran 2^nd and 1^st at Churchill, and then ran 1^st and 3^rd in the Belmont. It’s difficult for me to assign credence to the NY runners nowadays.  But of the top 3 here, I still like the potential of Todd’s Dreamlike as the best hope.

April 8: Toyota Blue Grass Stakes Grade 1

Tapit Trice, who we had ranked 3^rd for Kentucky, won by a neck, giving Todd another entry.

To be perfectly honest as we always are here, I didn’t like any of the others in this race, but Verifying did take a big step up in class in holding on for 2^nd by a neck.  He may be ranked next week.

April 8:  Santa Anita Derby G1

Practical Move, 2^nd ranked in our Dozen, got it done by a nose; his Derby ticket was already stamped.

Mandarin Hero, from Japan, first career race, 2^nd in a Grade 1 by a nose.  Hard to see that coming.

Skinner and National Treasure, who disappointed us again, ran 3 and 4 for Tim Yakteen.

So the Dirty Dozen held up well, among those who have actually competed since then.  One that we would have liked to see on this continent but won’t until he shows up at Churchill Downs next month, is the Japanese bred Derma Sotogake.  His UAE Derby G1 win was quite impressive and we have him ranked 4^th.

.

Another one of our highly ranked colts, #5 Geaux Rocket Ride, was scheduled to run in the SA Derby at 3-1 ML but was scratched with a fever and apparently has been pulled out of the Kentucky Derby as well, which is disappointing, but the health of the horses is the most important thing.

.

Others that we didn’t mention here, they already ran their last prep, but don’t forget about the Louisiana Derby G2 exacta of Kingsbarns (Todd again) and Disarm (Asmussen).  They are likely to be back shelved from most minds on the first Saturday of May, but they are both contenders.

.

We’ll do another Derby Dirty Dozen after the Lexington Stakes on April 15, after which we shall have a better gauge as to who will actually Run for the Roses.  A lot will change between now and May 6 as to who will actually race, so stay tuned to this site for the latest rankings and info.

Saturday, April 1. No fooling here, this is a huge day for horse racing, in particular the Triple Crown Trail and Road to the Roses. Kentucky Derby Futures Pool 6 with 39 individual entries and the field, closes at 6pm, which will be BEFORE 11 of the entries run in the Arkansas Derby and Florida Derby.

This is a good time to throw in a Derby Dozen and One rankings, and we’ve provided the Kentucky Derby Pool 6 Grid with Derby rankings embedded. In addition, this special version includes the Arkansas and Florida Derby Grids below it, and highlights horses with individual entries in Pool 6.

In addition, the Kentucky Derby website has provided the Brisnet long form PP’s for the Derby Pool 6, which you will notice is black and white and 14 pages compared to the one page Grid.

The Derby Dozen rankings are both objective and subjective, and have nothing to do with earnings or points, but rather on track performances and predictive reasoning. There are good or great odds on all of them that we ranked except for Forte, who is a universal #1 right now and the favorite at 5-1.
.
Weather is warm and sunny at both tracks today with little chance of any rain, and the tracks should both be dried out by race time. Oaklawn and Gulfstream both have great cards with 27 races total and multiple listed and graded stakes. Racing is already underway so let’s do some quick analysis.
.
R14 6:40ET 9f D FlaDerby-G1 3 YO
You can see the 5 highlighted horses out of the field of 12 that have individual entries in Pool 6 including heavy 4-5 favorite Forte who has only won 5 out of 6 races including a G2 and 3 G1’s.

I like the other 4 to hit the board also except for Dubyahnell, who has only done well on sloppy tracks. But I will wheel the 3 long shots at the 2 and 3 spot alternately, because usually, as in almost every edition except last year, one of those long shots finishes 2nd or 3rd.
Mage will almost certainly be a single digit entry and may even be 2nd choice. He had an impressive debut maiden win but ran into a horrible trip after hitting the gate in the FOY.
The two Saffie colts should be ready to roll after the trainer change, even though one of them is still a maiden. I’m leaning Nautical Star for top 3 honors since there’s a lot of speed for him to make up ground on late.

R12 7:24ET 9f D ArkDerby-G1 3 YO
The majority of this field, as in 6 out of 11, are entries in Pool 6, including the 4 with odds of less than 5-1. With them I would like the two speedsters out of the 3 and 4 posts to have a say in it because they’re really the only frontrunning types besides Reincarnate.
.
I consider those I ranked top 4 to be somewhat interchangeable. This doesn’t look like the type of race that someone like Red Route One will be able to come out of the clouds in the stretch, and it’s unclear if he can put up a great performance on a dry track, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he hit the board.
.
Remember to place your Pool 6 Futures bets before 6pm ET today. You can’t wait until you see the results of the Arkansas or Florida Derby, because betting closes for good at 6pm. No futures wagering tomorrow. Good luck!

Saturday March 25.  The Fairgrounds at New Orleans has an awesome slate of 8 stakes races, highlighted by the Louisiana Derby G2, FG Oaks G2, New Orleans Classic G2, and Muniz Memorial G2.  Other stakes include the Crescent City Derby and Oaks. 15 races total with over 160 horses!

We took last weekend off of precaps, but the last time we posted two weeks ago was on the Tampa Bay Derby G3 and Florida Oaks G3.  We hit a lot of great long shots that day but won’t bore you with the full recap.  But here’s what I said about the TB Derby:

R11 5:15ET 8.5f D TamDby-G3 3 YO

Let’s face it, Todd basically owns this race.  I will actually be shocked if Tapit Trice at 8-5 doesn’t win this race.  But it takes 4 to make up a superfecta.  The exacta could well involve Todd’s other steed Shesterkin at 9-2.  Best long shots to figure in:

Classic Legacy 6-1

Classic Car Wash 8-1

How did we come up with long shots like this? First, using the Grid, which we provided for FREE that day.  Also, I’m not going to be cocky but I know my 3yo’s as well or better than anyone.  You can download the Grid on that page and after deleting the scratches, see how helpful it was.

At the FGNO on Saturday, we have the 15 races as mentioned, starting at 1PM ET and ending sometime after 8PM.  The weather is slated to be nice, mostly sunny, with little chance or rain until Sunday. 

I’ll go over a few quick picks that look good today, but first, download the FREE Fairgrounds Grid for Saturday here so you can see what I’m talking about.

R12 6:42ET 9.5f D LaDerby-G2 3 YO 

A strong 12 horse field includes 3 Brad Cox trainees, led by favorite Instant Coffee at 2-1, 2 McPeek colts, 2 Asmussen long shots. Pletcher, Amoss, and Desormeaux will each take a longshot against him. Look, the favorite is strong after the Lecomte win, but think about it this way…

.

Here’s how I see it. If you’re getting long shots from Asmussen, Cox, McPeek, and Desormeaux, and Amoss, those are some good places to start.  My favorite long shot is probably Cagliostro at 12-1 with the unknown outside of N’orleans trainer.  This race is still wide open.

.

The Oaks has a short field of 5 to start, but it’s wide open too. The 2 long shots have valid shots. 

.

Saturday, March 11, 2023. Tampa Bay Downs hosts a big card today with the Tampa Bay Derby G3, Florida Oaks G3, Hillsborough G2, Challenger G3, Columbia Stakes, and some other assorted MSW’s for 3yo’s.  the Challenger and Hillsborough are for older horses but we’ll focus on the 3yo’s today.

.

First, download today’s free Grid for Tampa Bay Downs to follow along, and make your own picks.  Tampa weather is warm and sunny and the first post is at 11:55AM today.

R2 12:25ET 8.18f D MSW 3 YO  37000

The first 3yo race goes off at 12:25PM obviously, and looks to be a close call between two Pletcher trainees and a Shugh horse which is the favorite, called Perform at 9-5.  Kelsey Danner also has an interesting first timer by Street Sense.

R3 12:57ET 6f D MSW 3 YO  37000

The next 3yo race stars 10 talented colts and geldings on dirt for 6f, and it’s wide open.  For the price, I would lean towards Rainbow’s Pride and King Miano.

R6 2:27ET 6f D MSW 3 YO F 37000

This field involves 14 fillies on schedule, 2 of which are alternates.  It’s wide open so I like the 1^st time starters on the front end wheel.

R7 3:02ET 8f T ColumbiaB75k 3 YO 

This one has 3yo’s on turf, all of which have raced at least 3 times already. Todd and Shug look to have the upper hand in this one, but Terranova has the favorite, and Maker’s steed is solid.  Super long shot available? Of course.  Smoke Lightening at 30-1.  Lights of Broadway has good value at 6-1 too.

Dreaming of Snow at 8-1.  Always bet on any horse with the top dirt PF going onto turf.

Ticker Tape Home was doing great until she transferred to dirt.  Back on turf looks great at 15-1.

Shug will again rear his head with Allamericanbeauty at 8-1.

March 9, 2023.  The 5^th but not final Kentucky Derby futures pool opens Friday March 10^th and will close Sunday the 12^th.  Pool 5 also includes Kentucky Oaks potential contenders.  There are 39 individual entries in each Pool, so necessarily over half of them will not even make the field in either race.

.

For the first time in this series of Derby Pools, the ML favorite is not the field (all others not shown), because Baffert has once again assigned several of his best horses to Tim Yakteen, meaning they now appear in the Pool, but not all of them.

.

Forte is the slight favorite and that is unlikely to change this week, after winning his fourth straight stakes race in the Fountain of Youth G2 to open his 3yo career, but the Yakteen/Baffert horses have some good value.

.

At least we have several Baffert horses to bet on for the first time in the futures pools, because they are now Yakteen trainees. Mysteriously missing is BC Juvenile runner-up Cave Rock, but he has been working. Cave Rock won his maiden and two G1 races before getting edged out in the BCJ by Forte.

.

Two of the fillies and 2 colts are racing this weekend, all at Tampa.  You will note that they are highlighted in the Grid.  The two fillies are running in turf faces and the 2 colts are in dirt races.  Most of the rest will be pointed towards the big G1’s at the end of March and early April.

.

The filly Oaks market looks a lot more attractive in Pool 5, with the top PF’s going to a Pletcher trainee with a 30-1 ML, albeit untested at two turns. Others look good at nice odds, including the field at 15-1.  But you can find some good value in the Derby pool, and there will be one more pool at the end of the month.

March 2023. The thoroughbred horse racing schedule for North America and Japan has already changed, 9 days into the month. More racing has been added, increasing to over 140 races this month.

.

As usual, Gulfstream Park wins count for the most stakes races this time of year, but they’re only 1 race ahead of Santa Anita and the Fairgrounds. Tampa and Sunland are also showing strong cards coming up, including some road to the roses action.

Saturday, February 25, 2023. Oaklawn Park has a strong program today featuring the Rebel Stakes G2, Honeybee G3, and 3 other key 3yo races on the 12 race card.

Racing begins at 1PM ET / 12PM Oaklawn time with over 100 horses slated to run after morning scratches. Unfortunately it’s the coldest day of the week, with overcast skies and scattered showers in the area. The track for first post is sloppy.

.

But it will otherwise be an interesting day of racing, and seeing what horses will take to the sloppy track. Trainers, connections, and horseplayers alike are also eager to see how their 3yo’s will stack up.

Lots of good long shot specials are on the board today. We will not be mentioning any horse at less than 5-1 because that’s boring bullshit.

.

In race 1 watch out for Sophie’s Star, who is down to 16-1 from ML of 20-1 and Sassy Lass who has the best PF and yet went up to 8-1 from 6-1 ML.

.

Race 2, Outrunem at 30-1 ML has a great outing in his last mud route race.

.

Race 3 Trident Hit is the 2nd longest shot but one of the better PF’s of the last 4 and should return to form with plenty of speed to chase.

.

Race 4 why not box or wheel the Lukas 1st timer in there at 30-1? It might help for a good payout in the 1st 3yo race of the day.

.

Race 5 watch out for Uncle Buddy and Skelly both at 8-1 ML to spice up that superfecta.

.

Race 6 is the first 3yo filly race and 1, 2, 3, 5 all have nice odds and solid shot at hitting the board or winning.

You’re starting to get the hang of it, so let’s fast forward to the stakes racing.

R10 5:43ET 8.5f D Honeybee-G3 3 YO F. We got 12 talented fillies going at it so this one is wide open. Here are my favorite longshots.

Effortlesslyelgant 20-1ML. You probably won’t get over 15-1.

Doudoudouwanadance also at 20-1 should rebound from a subpar race.

Condensation, Taxed, and Gambling Girl also offer double digit MLs and a solid shot of hitting the board. Like I said it’s wide open.

R11 6:23ET 8.5f D Rebel-G2 3 YO.

Will Steve Asmussen’s pair of Gun Runner’s really go off at 8-1 and 10-1 in a 3yo race at Oaklawn. It will be less than that but still great value.

The 3 favorites do look the best on paper, but there are lots of options in the 11 horse field, and with the sloppy track, there are always surprises.

Kentucky Derby 2023 Futures Pool 4 Open Feb.10-Feb.12

The 4^th Futures Pool for the 2023 edition of the Kentucky Derby opens Friday, February 10 and will close at 6PM Eastern time on Sunday, February 12.  The morning line favorite is the field at 2-1, which means all other 3yo’s not listed as one of the 39 individual entries.

.

The individual favorite is Forte at 8-1, who last raced in November, winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile G1 for Todd. Next up is Instant Coffee at 12-1, last seen winning the Lecomte G3 in January for Brad Cox, and Verifying at 15-1 also in the Cox stable but has yet to win anything of note. The others are all 20-1 and up.

The field will likely remain the favorite, as since it includes the entire Bob Baffert stable, which includes BC Juvenile runner-up Cave Rock and Southwest G3 winner Arabian Knight.

.

Four of the individual entries are slated to run this Saturday Feb.11, including Arctic Arrogance and Hit Show in the Withers G3 at Aqueduct; and Dubyahnell and Litigate in the Sam F Davis G3 at Tampa Bay Downs.

.

So you may want until Sunday to make your picks, as one is a Todd trainee and one is a Cox, and the other two, coached by Linda Rice and Danny Gargan, have strong PF’s according to the Grid.
