The two year old power rankings known as the American Free Handicap (AFH), were developed in 2019 to fill in the void after the discontinuation of the Experimental Free Handicap and the lack of other available and reliable 2yo rankings. These are developed using statistical methods, as described below the table. The juvenile season will end in December.

2021 is the third year and we have made much progress since the inaugural run.  The rankings are geared towards the classic distance races of over a mile, however there is no bias for turf, dirt, or artificial surfaces.  The ranking is completely objective and uses earnings and stakes performances as the basis.

The rankings don’t discriminate against sex, as the points for the objectified races are the same for open, male, or female,  but you can sort the table by sex.  As was done last year, we’ll see how this year’s rankings turn out and make adjustments again next year.  2yo AFH archives here.

If you want objectivity combined with opinion for the Derby contenders, look for the Double Derby Dozen series which will begin in November.  Kentucky Derby Central.

The 2021 season still isn’t complete as there are still 3 races worth $1.4 million in purse money up for grabs, but Echo Zulu will likely remain atop the rankings.  If you don’t believe she belongs on top, consider that her final time in the Breeders Cup Fillies was 1/4 second faster than that of BC Juvenile champion Corniche.
