Mor Spirit proves his name in Robert and Beverly Lewis G3 at Santa Anita
Saturday, Feb.6
Gulfstream Park
Mor Spirit was full of spirit in the stretch of the Robert and Beverly Lewis, as he took control in the stretch to win the 8.5 furlong race and win some more Derby points.
The pace was questionable, and although rating nicely in third, it looked doubtful that he would make the lead after a 47.78 half mile.
However, it was no problem, as he took the lead in mid stretch, while Uncle Lino held on for 2nd, as he was in for most of the race, in an impressive first race over two turns.
I Will Score, who was also making his first route race start, with high expectations, finished 3rd as the second betting choice, after leading for most of the race.
Dressed in Hermes picked up the pieces for 4th in his first dirt start of the year, finishing well in four turf starts, including a G3 stakes win.
Let’s Meet in Rio wasn’t found near the lead on the wire, perhaps because the slow pace didn’t suit his strong closing style.
I still like this horse, as the only time he faced a fast pace, he won the race at 1 mile. He will still rank well in the Derby Dozen, despite the setback today.
