Kentucky Derby Futures pool 2 is in full swing this weekend. The difference between this year and prior years, is that there are 3 days of the pool, with final odds locked in for each day of the pool. So it’s basically 3 pools.

Today, the field opened as the favorite, as usual, at 5-2 morning line, after beginning at a 4-5 ML on day 1 of the pool. The crowd favorites on day 1 earned their odds with Mohaymen at 4-1 and Nyquist at 6-1.

Although the field has much to offer, some of the 23 single entry horses have some incredible odds if you like to take your chances on some real talent.

Awesome Banner (Awesome of Course), is an undefeated sprinter who has won all 3 lifetime races going away from the field, including a G2 and G3. He is arguably the fastest 3yo in training right now, and if his speed holds up over 2 turns, at 60-1 it’s a bargain. His pedigree with Miranda Strands at the bottom implies that he can go the distance.

Danzing Candy (Twirling Candy) is also very interesting at 35-1. He’s been around 2 turns in an OC80 and passed with flying coors. However, the colt has not run against stakes company at all, and his pedigree doesn’t suggest classic distance success.

Gift Box, also by Twirling Candy, offers 60-1 odds Saturday. He hasn’t done much wrong yet, losing his first race while trying to close on a slow pace. He followed that up with a maiden win and a 3rd place in the Remsen G2, where he again tried to close on a pathetically slow pace, but was beaten by Mohaymen. Great odds for a 4th time starter.

Zulu at 25-1 looks good but I’d rather get some Preakness future odds on him right now.
