Creator surged late for a surprising victory at Belmont Stakes, overtaking Destin 8-1 by a nose for a hard fought stretch win. It was his first race back after a horrible Kentucky Derby trip in which he was also 16-1. Lani 12-1 and Governor Malibu 17-1 rounded out the the top 4 for a $14,000 to 1 superfecta.

The win was very close and required a photo, but Irad Ortiz knew he had it, blowing kisses to the crowd after crossing the finish line. Destin rated right behind a solid but doable pace set by Creator’s stablemate Gettysburg, but couldn’t hold on in the final yards.

Preakness winner Exaggerator was in contention for most of the way, but couldn’t rate correctly and was 4 wide on both turns, finding no place to save ground. He finished out of the money, leaving the way for huge payouts all around.

The Japanese contender Lani came flying late in the stretch and for a moment it looked like he would overtake the leaders, but they had their own match race going on and others weren’t invited.

Rain began immediately after the race, but only lasted long enough to soak the winning connections while they were awarded the trophy. As the awards ceremony concluded, Creator left the crowd with a nice rainbow, making good on his promise. It was right on cue after owner Bobby Flay thanked his Creator for the opportunity.
