Saturday, April 27. OK it’s a weekend before the Kentucky Derby but that doesn’t mean nothing is going on. Golden Gate has an exciting card with the grade 3 San Fran Mile and several other stakes races including the California Derby and Oaks.

Now we’re not going to pretend that any of these are Kentucky Derby or Oaks contenders, because they’re definitely not, but some of them could appear at Pimlico in 3 weeks on Preakness weekend.

In the Cal Derby, 1 horse that may schedule the Preakness if he runs well is Baffert’s Kingly, who finished 2nd to possible Kentucky Derby entrant (23rd in points) Anothertwistafate in the El Camino Derby here in February.

Another twist of fate could be a win by San Vicente G2 winner Sparky Ville, who has been very good except for his only route race which was an 8.5f loss which was also his only turf start. This will be his first polytrack start but he’s the slight favorite.

Also contending will be Erlich, Visitant, More Ice, and The Creep, who has the best name of any 3yo horse.
