Halloween Horse Honors at Mahoning: Best of Ohio Precap

.

Saturday, October 31.  Halloween is usually low key in the thoroughbred industry, being the week leading up to the Breeders’ Cup.  But Mahoning Valley Racing will have some horse honors today for the Best of Ohio series, which has 5 stakes races worth $500k total.

.

Mahoning Valley Racing.

.

Racing begins at 12:15PM ET with the undercard, which looks mostly chalky anyway, so this Precap will just cover the stakes racing beginning at 2:34PM.  Get today’s Free Grid here to follow along and make your own picks.

R6 2:34ET 8.5f D JuvenileB100k 2 YO:  2 3 5 6 4  LSS 3

The open Juvenile race has a potential star in the making in Morestride, who should be the post favorite after winning his debut by 10. Top LP goes to Buckeye Magic at 8-1, the long shot special. ML favorite Uptown has the right experience to win, and the only to race at a mile, but the other 4 listed won’t make it easy.

.

R7 3:02ET 8.5f D JWGlbrthB100k 2 YO F:  5 2 4 6 7            LSS 4 7

The Galbreath for juvenile fillies also has a legit fav in Alexandria, 3rd in the Pocohontas G3 last out and the only to race a mile yet. Happy As You Go has won 3 in a row and improving.  LSS Shez Shacked Up finally broke maiden in her 5th try last out and looks ready.  LSS Lemon Deelite had a great late move in her only race but may have to move faster early.

.

R8 3:30ET 6f D OHSprintB100k 3 UP:  7 11 1 4 6 5              LSS 11 6

In the Best of Ohio Sprint, it’s hard to pick against favorite Altissimo after 2 excellent races by the 7yo gelding.  The other 7yo Gelding Mo Don’t No is an experience stakes racer with good LP. Midnite Thunder won’t go off at the ML of 15-1 but may still have post time value.  He was on the right track after his first 2 including a win over fellow LSS Going With Style, before a disappointing 3rd race where he fell flat in the stretch.  Buckeye Bullet has beaten Mo Don’t No so he’s also dangerous.

.

R9 3:58ET 9f D OhDistafB100k 3 UP FM:  3 9 6 2 1 4         LSS 6 4

In the Distaff, Moonlit Mission is a deserving favorite and a multiple stakes winner at or about this distance, including the Galbreath here last year. She narrowly lost in a sprint last out to Star Mabee, but that one has been somewhat ineffective at over a mile. Top LP is LSS Market Success at 12-1 ML, you always have to look at top LP at 9f, and her last 3 races at a mile were solid. Circus Rings is the only other proven at this distance.

.

R10 4:26ET 10f D OHEndrnceB100k 3 UP:  10 8 6 7 3        LSS 7 3

The Endurance will wind up racing for the afternoon with a 10f contest, which means again we have to pay special attention to top LP, especially here with a good amount of early speed in it.  Favored Forewarned looks very hard to beat here with top LP, but couldn’t catch I Wanna Win, 2nd in LP, in their last match, at this same distance. Wicked Warrior has beaten several in this field but his speed will need to hold up for more than a mile.

.

That’s it for today’s analysis.  It looks like there are some good long shots specials to go along with the chalk today, so take your chances.  Remember, the Breeders’ Cup is coming up next weekend!

.

You can get The Grid for all the major tracks and race days here, including Keeneland the Breeders Cup.

.

Good luck!
