Arlington Park’s Big Saturday is underway today, with 3 Grade 1 races. The Beverly D and Arlington Million are both Breeders Cup Challenge Races, meaning the winners automatically qualify for the Breeders’ Cup. The Secretariat will likely send 1 or 2 to the BC Mile but it’s not automatic

The fields are somewhat competitive, but Chad Brown and Aidan O’brien are sending at least 2 in each G1 race, with Chad sending 3 in the Beverly D, virtually ensuring that each of them will get at least one BC berth, whether automatic or not.

Chad Brown’s triple in the Beverly D include favorite and defending champion Sistercharlie in her 2nd race back this year. She won the Diana G1 last out after wrapping up last year winning the BC Filly & Mare Turf, for which the winner gains an automatic entry. O’brien’s pair are the 2nd and 3rd ML choices.

In the Secretariat, Brown is also favored with Fog of War in his 5th career race, the 2nd of which was a G1 win almost a year ago. Aidan’s pair are both in the 1st US race here as they prep for the Breeders’ Cup.

Again, Chad is favored in the Million G1 with Bricks and Mortar, who is on a 5 race win streak after returning from a year layoff last December, and fresh off a Manhattan G1 win. Chad also has the 2nd ML choice with the runner up in the Manhattan, Robert Bruce. Aidan’s pair joins 2 other foreign runners who look dangerous to qualify for the BC Turf here.

Saturday, August 3, Saratoga Springs, New York. Saratoga’s legendary summer meet continues this weekend with some excellent contests such as the Whitney G1 for 3 and up and the Test G1 for 3yo fillies, both of which will prove to be competitive races.
.

Whitney G1: McKinzie is the favorite and probably the best 4yo in training right now for classic distance racing. He was ranked 3rd in last year’s Derby Double Dozen with a month to go to the Kentucky Derby after winning the Sham and San Felipe. Baffert declared him unfit and he took 6 months off.
.
Since then, he has finished 1st or 2nd in 6 G1 or G2 races, with his only flaw being a horrid outing in the BC Classic. There’s no reason to doubt him right now and he appears to be sitting on top of a big one. Last out he edged out Thunder Snow, the co-2nd ML choice here, in the Met Mile for 2nd. Thunder Snow was fresh off his Dubai World Cup win.

The most interesting horse is the other co-2nd ML choice Preservationist, coming off a win in the Suburban G2 at Belmont in which he achieved the highest PF of any in the field in his 8th career race. Preservationist got a late start, making his debut a month after the Kentucky Derby last year, but is proving to be formidable, especially with the 10f Suburban win last month.

Vino Rosso also rears his head in excellent form coming off a Hollywood Gold Cup G1 win at Santa Anita, as Todd continues to try to find his sweet spot. Jason Servis enters the dangerous Monongahela with the big boys, with the improving 5yo coming off an impressive Iselin G3 win at Monmouth.
.
Others not mentioned are running for 3rd in this race. But don’t underestimate the importance of this race. The winner gets a coveted slot in the Breeders’ Cup Classic in November, despite how he might be racing from now until then.

Test G1: This is a 7f Test for top 3yo fillies, of which there are 7 in this field. Covfefe was beginning to look unbeatable before her 3rd place last out. That puts her on more of a level playing field with Bellafina, Royal Charlotte, and Serengeti Express. Trenchtown Cat is the legit longshot.
.
Several other races will attract some attention, including the 3 MSW’s. Specifically we’re looking at the MSW 90k for 2yo’s at 7f on dirt, which has a laundry list of top trainers:

In the good old days, Lukas would be favored in this race, but times have changed. He has the worst ROI in the 10 horse field for situational stats. But I wouldn’t put it past him to pull this out. It’s anyone’s race and a good time to hit the wheel all button at various positions.

Saturday, July 27, 2019. A field of only 6 will compete at Saratoga today in the Jim Dandy G2, considered to be the major prep for the Travers G1 in exactly 4 weeks from now. Contestants include Preakness winner War of Will, favorite and Belmont runner-up Tacitus, and Tax who was 4th in the Belmont.

Peter Pan G2 winner Global Campaign, who beat the actual Belmont Stakes winner in the Pan, makes the slight 2nd choice in the morning line. The two other contestants, Laughing Fox and Mihos, are both stakes winners but neither have finished in the top 3 in a graded stakes race.
.
It would thus seem like the 2 long shots don’t stand much of a chance, but they are 2nd and 3rd in LP in the Grid. Normally a good factor for a 9f race, but then you consider that there is almost a complete lack of early speed in the race, and again they are not realistic.
.
Front runner Global Campaign is on paper to have it his own way out front, but you can bet Tax and WOW won’t be lingering too far behind him. Mihos will need to ride close to the pace also. But don’t mistake, it won’t be some kind of speed duel with blazing fractions.
.

.
So, the Dandy is not a very good betting race, and nor is the other featured race, the Alfred Vanderbilt G1 with its field of 7. The Bowling Green G2 however, offers a field of 12 after scratches. Channel Maker will be the favorite and bested 2nd choice Arklow by ¼ length in the Man O War G1 in May. Both are coming off solid graded stakes races in June.
.
But the field also includes 3 top 5 finishers in the United Nations G1 last month at Monmouth: runner up Zulu Alpha, Channel Cat, and Focus Group. Sadler’s Joy is listed as the 3rd ML choice but it will be his first contest since running 3rd in the BC Turf G1 last November.
.
There’s no early speed in the race, which is an extra advantage for Channel Maker who runs near the pace. There doesn’t appear to be any logical pace setter so likely 1 of the longshots will try to steal it on the front end. Ya Primo is kind of a mystery but comes off 2 straight G1 wins in some other country.
.
There are 12 races on the card with over 100 horses competing for some nice purses. Race 4 is a MSW with a 90k purse that will be attracting attention to those following 2yos. None of them are in the AFH top 100 because only 1 of them has raced yet and didn’t win. But the list of trainers includes Pletcher, Zito, Asmussen, Asmussen, Mott, and other top trainers.
.
The seemingly unbeatable entry is a couple: Pletcher with a colt by Super Saver, who he won the Kentucky Derby with, and an Into Mischief colt trained by Asmussen. It will be as exciting a 5.5f maiden race as there is. Another MSW for 2yo’s also for 90k will be run at 8.5f on turf and that should be interesting as well.

Indiana Grand: Derby and Oaks Grade 3 racing tonight!

Saturday, July 13. Indiana Grand racino has a great race card scheduled for tonight with over 100 horses scheduled to run in 10 races. This includes 6 stakes races highlighted by the Indiana Derby and Oaks, both Grade 3 races.
.

The timing is good for Indiana since the major Kentucky tracks aren’t running right now and it’s only a couple hours from Louisville or Lexington. This allows them to easily attract the Kentucky horses, but the stakes races are attracting horses from all over the east, southeast, and Midwest.
.

.
25 of the nation’s best 3yo’s will run in the Oaks and Derby. The Oaks attracts 12 fabulous fillies running 8.5f for a $200k purse on the dirt course. 11 colts and geldings are scheduled to compete for half a million dollars in the Indiana Derby also at 8.5f.
.
The Derby field favors Mr. Money who is coming off 2 consecutive G3 wins at Churchill. 2nd choice Math Wizard looks strong coming off 2nd place in the Ohio Derby G3. The 3rd betting choice will likely be Alwaysmining, who put his 6 win streak in Maryland on the line in the Preakness where he failed badly, but looks to rebound to top form here.

Gray Magician was last seen racing horribly in the Kentucky Derby, but before that had a couple solid races, 2nd in the UAE Derby and 2nd to Alwaysmining in a Laurel stakes race. Long Range Toddy will also attract bettors after his 3rd in the Ohio Derby. His Rebel G2 win earlier this year makes him dangerous, and he’s the only other Ky Derby competitor in the field.

Any of the others in the field quite frankly would need a big step up in class to finish better than 3rd or 4th, but that can happen with 3yos and horses in general. Mr. Money or Math Wizard will win it, and the others mentioned will likely fill out the superfecta ticket.
.
The Oaks looks like it has a lot more possibilities, with the only real standout being favored Street Band because of her Fairgrounds Oaks win. It’s unclear who the 2nd choice will be, out of a handful of horses at single digit ML, but the only one with real qualifications would be Chocolate Kisses, a G3 winner.
.
The palindromically named Hallawallah could bust up a lot of tickets at 10-1 morning line as she draws in as an alternate. Her speed could be devastating if it holds up at all for 8.5f, and she has the top PF for her debut maiden win and top EP. Good long shot special if odds hold up.
.
The second best EP belongs to Kim K, who also registered the 2nd best PF in the field for her OCM win last out at CD. Sundaysatthebeach ties with Street Band for the 3rd best PF, a maiden win at Keen, and also has the best LP in the field, which might end up making her the 2nd or 3rd betting choice.

Thursday, July 11, 2019. Saratoga returns its legendary summer only meet today featuring two graded stakes races, the Grade 3 Schuylerville and Quick Call. We’re providing a Free Grid PP for the occasion.

The Schuylerville G3 is a stakes race for 2yo fillies going 6f on the dirt. 4 of these fillies are already in the AFH top 100, and the other 5 will be trying to make the rankings. That includes Favored Shippy, who looked excellent winning maiden at first ask by almost 11 lengths.
.
Shippy has the highest PF in the field, just one point higher than Comical, tied for top LP. All are winners at first asking except Lady Fatima, who eked out a win 2nd time on turf, and Buxom Beast who has been training well at Saratoga but hasn’t raced yet.
.
The Quick Call G3 is for 3yo’s going 5.5f on the turf course and has an attractive field of 11. Call Paul will most likely be the favorite, as he won the Saratoga Special G2 here last year in his 2nd career race and is coming off a stakes win, but it will be his first race on turf. He will have his work cut out for him.
.

Friday, July 5 2019. Prairie Meadows has it’s big race day of the year with the Iowa Derby, Iowa Oaks G3, the Cornhusker G3, and Iowa Sprint Handicap. First post for the exciting 10 race night card will be at 7pm ET, and stakes racing begins at 8:54 PM with the Iowa Sprint Handicap.

The Oaks G3 favors Lady Apple, last seen finishing 3rd in the Kentucky Oaks 2 months ago. Black Eyed Susan runner up Ulele will have something to say in the matter and has the highest PF in the field due to that race. Others are running for 2nd and 3rd.

Following that is the $250k Iowa Derby with an interesting and competitive field of 12. There is a mix of several once Triple Crown hopefuls, listed stakes runners, and some newcomers to the stakes scene. Top Line Growth has the best PF last out and 2nd best LP. Top LP belongs to multiple stakes winner Shang.

The featured race is the Cornhusker Handicap G3 and has another competitive and interesting field of 11 stakes racers from all over the country, including here at the Prairie. Top LP average by far is Sir Anthony at 10-1, who also has the 2nd best PF overall for his last dirt effort 2 back. It’s also the best PF in the last 6 for any in the field. Thus our long shot special of the day.

Saturday, June 29. Gulfstream Park has what used to be a huge race day highlighted by the Smile Sprint G3 and the Princess Rooney G2, which is now a Breeders Cup Challenge Race. On the undercard are the Carry Back Stakes, a former G2 race now worth 75k, the Azalea Stakes also 75k, and a 75k Turf Sprint.
.
The $250k former Grade 1 Princess Rooney is offering a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint in November. However, it is only attracting 7 runners this year, most likely because most are not brave enough to compete with the defending champion, 5yo mare Stormy Embrace at 4-5 morning line.
.

.
Stormy Embrace had her best career performance winning this race last year and is coming off a ten length win in a stakes race here last month. Her only finish worse than 3rd in her last 10 was in the BCFMS in a performance that was not very characteristic for her on a fast track.
.
Razorback Lady at 8-1 ML will set the pace and try to hold on to the lead, but last time couldn’t hold off Trenchtown Cat at 6-1 ML, who looked great in her first dirt race. It’s unclear to me exactly why Saguro Row is the 2nd ML choice at 5-2, but I won’t be counting on her to win.
.
Keep an eye on the 5yo mare Royal Asscher at 12-1, who looks to be in great form after winning her last 2 optional claiming races by 7 lengths each at a mile. Cutting a furlong off that distance could be just what she needs to compete in this G2. He also has top EP in the Grid. Long shot special alert.
.
The next race will be the Smile Sprint G3 for the boys and the competition looks a lot more even, but the 6 not named Jalen Journey will have a tough time getting by the ML favorite. The gelding hasn’t let anyone by in his last 3 of 4 career starts but this will be his first stakes contest. The other 6 are all stakes winners.
.
The Carry Back for 3yo’s features ML fav Well Defined, who looked like he was paving a path to the Kentucky Derby earlier this year with a Sam F Davis stakes win but was flat in the Tampa Bay Derby. Since then has taken 3 months off and should be tough to beat. Jackson will be the prime challenger.
.
The most exciting race to me is the MSW for 2yo’s going 5.5f for a 52,500 purse. Favorite Genghis has had 2 almost identical and excellent races in which he lost less than 1 length combined. Those were for 65k purses so the class drop could be just what he needs. The winner could make the AFH top 100.
.
2nd choice Chance It comes off 2nd by a length in a race just like this one 4 weeks ago. The 2 longest ML shots have also the best situational trainer stat aggregates according to the Grid. Daniel Pita will try to turn over another big long shot with Mr. Impressive. Beinfun trainer Becker also has good win and ITM percentages. Long shot specials alert.

Saturday, June 22. Jack Thistledown Racino. Today’s race of the week (ROW) is the Grade 3 Ohio Derby, the only graded stakes race hosted by TDN. The $500k race for 3yo’s provides a good reason for this to be the one day of the year we’ll provide a free Grid for the somewhat obscure Ohio track.

The short field of 7 doesn’t lack in some star power this year. ML favorite Owendale is coming off a 3rd in the Preakness and before that a Lexington G3 win at Keeneland. The slight 2nd choice Long Range Toddy is coming off 2 poor races on sloppy surfaces including the Kentucky Derby but was one of 2 Rebel G2 winners before that on a fast track.

Third in line is Peter Pan G3 winner Global Campaign, who has the highest PF in the Grid for that race. There is no reason to doubt that PF since the 2nd place finisher Sir Winston went on to win the Belmont Stakes 2 weeks ago. Stanley Hough is probably still wondering if he could have won that Belmont.

4th choice Bethlehem Road is undefeated in his 3 starts including the Parx Spring Derby last out and looks like he could be capable of doing more, but it’s unclear what he will do if he doesn’t get the lead. 5th choice Math Wizard was 4th in his last 2 including the Wood Memorial G2.

The two long shots are also speedsters that muscle up early, and of those, Dare Day is the one that bears watching. He won both of his starts by 7 and 8 lengths, but they were at 5.5 and 6 furlongs. He would likely have to rate a bit to have a chance at 9f in this short but speedy field.

Because 4 of the 7 are essentially frontrunners, it’s hard to go against Owendale who not only has the top LP but has been excellent in his last 2 with Florent Geroux rating him towards the rear of the mid pack. Global Campaign and Long Range Toddy look good in this spot too so it could be very chalky.

For the 4th spot in your super it looks like Dare Day or Bethlehem Road are ready to step into that slot or maybe even bust up the trifecta, so don’t overlook those two. Dare Day at 15-1 is a nice price. Most importantly from this race we’ll see who shaping up for the Travers this year.

There are two other stakes races on the card right before the Derby, and interestingly, the two top ML choices in each are also 1 and 2 in LP in the Grid, in that order. It is quite possible that their oddsmaker is using the Grid but I don’t know who it is. So far those races look chalky too.
.
But never fear, there are 10 races on the card, and not every race will go according to the book. There will be some good value plays in there somewhere if you look for them in the Grid.
