Oaklawn Park Monday: 3 G3’s: Southwest, Razorback, and Bayakoa on President’s Day

.
Monday, February 18, 2019. President’s Day at Oaklawn host 3 graded stakes races. The Bayakoa G3, Razorback G3, and finally the Southwest G3, making it an exciting day for racing in Hot Springs.
.
This weekend we have 2 races of the week. Today we have the Southwest G3 at Oaklawn. We also had the Risen Star G2 on Saturday, which we broke down for you beforehand. That race was won by favored War of Will at even money, who was running away with it Country House closed in deep stretch to make it an exciting contest.
.

War of Will holds off Country House in the Risen Star G2 on Feb.16 2019 at the Fairgrounds.

War of Will holds off Country House in the Risen Star G2 on Feb.16 2019 at the Fairgrounds.

.
Country House was labeled our super long shot of the day because of his morning line of 20-1, but after lots of smart money came in, he wound up at 6-1 at post time. Here’s how the 4 graded stakes winners measured up in The Grid for Saturday:
R9 Mineshaft G3 8.5 D: Winner top LP and stamina 5-1; Runner up 2nd in power and stamina, top 4 LP
R10 Fairgrounds H G3 9f T: Winner top LP stamina and power; Runner up was 2nd in EP and speed.
R11 Rachel Alexandra G2 8.5 D: Winner top Power, EP, and Speed.
R12 Risen Star G2 8.5 D: Winner in top 3 of 14 in power, stamina; Runner-up tops in stamina and LP, also listed as our Super Long Shot Special at 20-1ML down to 6-1 at post time.
.
So we did pretty good on Saturday, and looking to keep that going today at Oaklawn Park, which has 4 stakes races, 3 graded, culminating in the Southwest G3 for 3yo’s prepping for the Kentucky Derby. There are also 4 other various 3yo races on the card, making it a big day for 3yo’s altogether.
.

Follow along with us using The Oaklawn Grid here. Scratches have been taken out already.
.
The Bayakoa Stakes G3 is race 7 scheduled for 5:09pm ET and has a field of 10 fillies and mares 4up competing 8.5f on dirt. The favorite is She’s a Julie, not surprisingly since she’s trained by Steve Asmussen, who basically owns this track. This race looks very chalky on paper. Not betting.
.
The Razorback Handicap G3 in Race 8 looks like a much better betting race, with 14 horses 4up going 8.5f on dirt. Favored Coal Front is legit with Todd Pletcher winning 3 graded stakes with him in 7 career races but he hasn’t gone 2 turns in a race yet. So it’s a great time to look for some value, which there always is in a field of 14.
.
Nun the Less 12-1 is our second pick, with Cipriano Contreras having good stats in these situations. The 7yo gelding is coming off a stakes win at turfway and has The Grid’s top LP, and tied with the top PF with the favorite. Our 3rd pick is Nanoosh also 12-1 ML, and is tied for the 2nd highest PF with his Zia Park Derby win last out in November. The layoff is a concern but he was last seen rapidly improving last year.
.
Copper Bullet 6-1 will likely be the 2nd choice due to Steve Asmussen coaching him in his 7th career race. He won a G2 last year at Saratoga and it will also be his first time around two turns. Our 5th pick is Tiz He The One 10-1 who ended last year in great form winning 3 in a row at Laurel.
.
Razorback G3 long shot specials:
Nun the Less 12-1
Nanoosh 12-1
Tiz He The One 10-1
.
The Southwest G3 is the featured race with 11 3yo’s slated to go 8.5f on dirt and a Kentucky Derby slot, which is not automatic in this race since it’s only worth 10-4-2-1 Derby points. But every point counts on the Triple Crown Trail, and several of these have some points already. 20 points are usually required to make the Derby field, so Gray Attempt or Long Range Toddy could actually stamp their ticket today.
.
Steve Asmussen is one such trainer who likes to nickel and dime his stable into the Kentucky Derby with 10 points here, 4 points there, etc. He has 5 horses in this race, giving him almost half the field and a good shot of earning some points for some of them. Long Range Toddy is his best hope, with 14 points already and coming off a 2nd place in the Smarty Jones. I’m not sure why he’s at 10-1 ML but that will come down for sure. The only other in his stable worthy of a 2nd look is Jersey Agenda at 5-1 ML, who can improve on his 3 lifetime races.
.
The favorite Cutting Humor is legit at 3-1, trained by Pletcher and is the best consistent late runner in the field, which appears to have a lot of speed in it, at least on paper. That sometimes means lots of restraint by jockeys early so we have to see how it plays out, but most likely speed dueling will happen.
.
The top LP technically belongs to Olympic Runner 15-1, but the way it’s calculated, it’s based on only 1 race, his last one which was an impressive front running win in the slop at Gulfstream at 8.5f, breaking his maiden in his 2nd attempt. I expect those odds also go to single digits but still worth betting on.
.
The horse to catch in most people’s minds is Gray Attempt, the speedy front runner who held on to win the Smarty Jones last out, just holding off the challenge by Long Range Toddy by a neck. If the other speed in this field challenges him, I expect most of them will fold. Unfortunately, there aren’t many reliable closers in the field other than those we already mentioned, Cutting Humor and LR Toddy.
.

Picks for Soutwest G3:
Cutting Humor 3-1
Long Range Toddy 10-1 long shot special
Olympic Runner 15-1 super long shot special
Gray Attempt 3.5-1
Jersey Agenda 5-1
.

Saturday at the FairGrounds: Risen Star G2 Breakdown; 4 Graded Stakes Races; Grid

.
Friday, February 15. The Fair Grounds at New Orleans will host 4 graded stakes racing on Saturday to end their 12 race card. It starts with the Mineshaft G3 for 4up on dirt, then the Fairgounds Handicap G3 on turf, for 4up fillies, and back to dirt for the Rachel Alexandra G2 for 3yo fillies, and finally the Risen Star G2 for 3yos. In all, over 140 horses are scheduled to race tomorrow before scratches.
.
For 3yos on the Triple Crown Trail, the Risen Star stakes is an important prep race, for a couple reasons. It’s the first 50 point race, so the winner is guaranteed a Kentucky Derby slot if healthy. The runner up is almost guaranteed a berth but will likely need a few more points than the 20 points, which is usually a bubble point quantity in the Kentucky Derby Points System.
.
Secondly it’s important to see how the 3yo’s measure up with only 3 months until the big one. Unfortunately, no Risen Star winner has won the Kentucky Derby, including the horse for which the race is named, who did win the Preakness and Belmont in 1988. Others have also gone on to major success, such as 2016 champion Gun Runner, who finished 3rd in the run for the roses, and the next year dominated and became Breeders’ Cup Classic Champion.
.
Thus this year’s field of 14 excellent 3yo horses trying to stamp their Derby tickets early. The favorite is and will be War of Will at 5-2 ML, who has been quite impressive after switching to dirt 2 races ago, finally breaking his maiden the 5th try, and then pulling away with the Lecomte G3
here a month ago. In that race, he beat 11 horses, including 5 in this field.
.

War of Will got a 4 length win in the Lecomte G3 on Jan.19 2019 (Coady)

War of Will got a 4 length win in the Lecomte G3 on Jan.19 2019 (Coady)

.
Also taking a lot of money will be Hog Creek Hustle 8-1, who made a great closing move for 2nd in the Lecomte G3
, and Manny Wah 12-1 who faded to 3rd in that race. Owendale 6-1 will be taking some action after 2 solid OC50’s, the last of which he won, beating 2 others in this field: Frolic More and Gun It.
.
So, everyone else in the field is basically a long shot according to the morning line, which makes our options very interesting, but some of that will change. Kingly is at 12-1 ML, and may be only the 4th best 3yo in Bob Baffert’s barn, but that could be saying a lot, because Baffert’s top 3 are in the top 5 of our current Derby Dozen. I expect single digit odds at post time and a solid performance.
.
Frolic More 10-1 will also likely take some action since his good closing move to almost catch Owendale last out, and should be a solid long shot to bet. Gun It 10-1 will take action because he’s trained by Steve Asmussen, but fading to 3rd behind Frolic More wasn’t that impressive last time out. I look for horses that don’t get passed in the stretch. Asmussen’s other in the field, Limonite 10-1, has a good habit of passing others in the stretch, and this will be his first race of the year.
.
Speaking of which, Mr. Money 12-1 hasn’t raced since the BC Juvenile G1
, where he was passed by only Game Winner and Signalman, still the top 2 in the Derby Dozen. Since then he’s had 3 months to work out and fill in, and I expect some good racing from him this year.
.
Plus Que Parfait 10-1 stumbled and got jostled around in the Lecomte G3
and wound up 5th, but before that he made a great closing move to almost snatch the Kentucky Jockey Club G2
title in late November from Signalman. He can’t be written off by any means. Country House 20-1 is a deep long shot and hasn’t beaten anyone of note, but was impressive last 2 races out.

So you can see there are some nice long shot possibilities here. The best double digit morning line long shots in the Risen Star:
Kingly 12-1
Plus Que Parfait 10-1
Mr. Money 12-1
Frolic More 10-1
Limonite 10-1
Super long shot special:
Country House 20-1 has top LP according to the Grid.
.
Of course, most of these are nice closing horses, and the race doesn’t appear to have much speed in it on paper. Thus it could just go Kingly, War of Will, Manny Wah, Owendale, and Gun It, with frontrunners and chalk dominating the race. Either way Kingly is the top pick.
.

The other 3 graded stakes races are all competitive and also offer some nice long shots. The 4 stakes races will have a guaranteed $200k Pick 4 so use the Grid to hit that.

Tampa Bay Sat.Feb.9 Sam.F.Davis G3, Tampa Bay G3, Endeavor G3 Stakes and Grid

.
Saturday, Feb.9 2019. Tampa Bay Downs gets into the Kentucky Derby fever today with the Sam F Davis G3 stakes for 3yo’s wanting to make a run for the roses this year. The 12 race card also has the Endeavor G3 on turf for fillies and mares 4 and up, the Suncoast Stakes for 3yo fillies, and the Tampa Bay G3 again for FM 4up on turf.
.

Knicks Go ran away with the Claiborne Breeders Futurity G1 at Keeneland Oct.6 2018

Knicks Go ran away with the Claiborne Breeders Futurity G1 at Keeneland Oct.6 2018

.
In the Sam Davis, Knicks Go is favored at 5-2 in the morning line, and is also the only horse in the field in appearing in the Derby Double Dozen or on the Derby Points Leaderboard. We have thus far forgiven him the clunker in the slop last time out, since before that he finished 2nd in the loaded BC Juve G1and 1st in the Keeneland Breeders Futurity G1. He’s ranked #3 in the Derby Dozen for now, and is also the only one in the field listed in the latest Kentucky Derby Futures Pool.
.
Tied with the favorite for top EP in The Grid is Well Defined, who looked good after winning a $400k stakes race at Gulfstream before delivering 2 clunkers including 12th in the BCJ. Also in the top tier of EP rankings are Still Dreaming, who looked good breaking his maiden last out in his 2nd try, and also has the top LP due to that last race. Going for Gold has looked good finishing 2nd in both maiden voyages, and tied for 2nd highest PF. All 3 of these have great betting odds on the morning line.
.
Also looking to figure into the mix at single digit odds will be Kentucky Wildcat, Five Star General, and especially So Alive, since he is run by Todd Pletcher, who typically wins this type of race. But if Knicks Go runs to his best prior form, the rest of the field is competing for 2nd. Regardless, there will be some new additions to the leaderboard, since only 1 of them has points so far.
.
In the Suncoast for $150k purse we have lukewarm favorites Sweet Diane, Twixt and Shout, and Winning Envelope, all winners so far. But the value plays are Tapit’s Princess, Lady Kate, and Point of Honor, also all winners, the ladder 2 of which won their first and only time out. Point of Honor has top LP but that is based on only 1 race.
.
The tracks are listed as fast and firm so far today at Tampa.

Kentucky Derby Futures Pool 2 Grid

.
Friday, Feb.8 2019. Kentucky Derby Futures Pool 2 begins today and runs through Sunday, Feb.10. As usual there are 23 individual entries and one entry for other horses not listed by name, known as “The Field.”
.

.
To kick off, The Field is the favorite with a morning line of 5-2. Bob Baffert’s Game Winner is the most favored single entry at 6-1. Baffert’s Improbable is the 2nd individual choice at 8-1, and Baffert’s Mucho Gusto and Coliseum are tied for the 5th ML choice at 15-1.
.

Game Winner of the BC Juvenile November 2 2018 Churchill Downs

Game Winner of the BC Juvenile November 2 2018 Churchill Downs

.
In between the Baffert stable are Jerry Hollendorfer’s Instagrand at 10-1, who hasn’t raced since August, and Bill Mott’s Hidden Scroll at 12-1, whose only race was a 14 length maiden win at a Gulfstream Mile in January.
.
Game Winner could well end up being the favorite in this pool, even though he probably won’t race again until March. Coliseum’s odds will likely go up since his only race this year was a dud in the Sham G3.
.
Hidden Scroll’s only race was impressive but it’s possible that he thrives on the sloppy track like his sire Hard Spun, who finished 2nd in the Kentucky Derby in 2007.
.
Another horse of interest who didn’t make the last Derby Dozen 30-1 Win Win Win, who has yet to go around 2 turns but has been impressive in his 4 races so far. Last out he won the 7f Pasco Stakes at Tampa by 7 lengths.
.
In this pool anything over 10-1 that you can make a case for is good value, so find some you like using the Grid.

Derby Double Dozen Feb.4 2019- Newcomers on the Scene

.
Feburary 4, 2019. It’s time once again for a new Derby Dozen, taking into account 3 big prep races last weekend: The Withers G3, Holy Bull G2, and Robert Lewis G3. The top 4 haven’t changed, because they haven’t raced this year, and consequently haven’t been beaten this year. They will have to start moving down if they don’t start running soon. The only one that won’t need any points is Game Winner, but they will all be running some preps this year if they want to run for the roses.
.
Kentucky Derby Central has the Derby Points Standings, Derby Prep Race Results and Charts, and all Derby related articles.
.
On the other hand, all others on this list except for one, which will be noted below, have raced this year at least once, and some twice already, so we can move them up and down depending on the strength of their race and the field they competed against. So here we give you a full 2 dozen and one horses to consider. A lot of thought and analysis goes into this top 25 and it is probably the best available. The next probable race is mostly an educated guess and not by any means definite.
.

2019 Kentucky Derby Double Dozen and 1. Feb.4 Derby Top 25.

2019 Kentucky Derby Double Dozen and 1. Feb.4 Derby Top 25.

.

1. Game Winner has to prove he can be beaten by anyone before he gets demoted. Probably a unanimous number one by anyone with horse sense, he won 3 Grade 1 races as a 2yo including the BCJ. He has yet to race this year but is looking like another Baffert juggernaut. You wouldn’t have been wrong to bet him in the futures pool 1 because his final odds of 5-1 may actually go down from there. Winning the BCJ at Churchill is a big indicator for a great Derby performance.
.

Game Winner of the BC Juvenile November 2 2018 Churchill Downs

Game Winner of the BC Juvenile November 2 2018 Churchill Downs

.
2. Signalman has not done much wrong, losing only to Knicks Go in the Breeders Futurity and BCJ, and to Game Winner of course. He rebounded for a big win 3 weeks later in the KYJC on the sloppy sealed track, so he has no issues with two extreme variations of Churchill so far. He is Kenny McPeek’s best Derby hope in a while and will probably appear in either the Risen Star or Southwest next.
.
3. Knicks Go gets a partial pass for his only bad race, the Kentucky Jockey Club G2. It is possible that he didn’t like the sloppy sealed track that day, because he obviously did like Churchill Downs 3 weeks before that on a fast track. It’s also possible it was too much too soon. After the Breeders’ Futurity win on Oct.6, then the 2nd place BC Juvenile on Nov.2, he was again on the track for the KYJC G2 and fell flat after ¾ mile. Nonetheless, there is a chink in his armor somewhere, and Churchill Downs is very often an off-track on Kentucky Derby day.
.
4. Mr. Money was sent straight to the BCJ after breaking his maiden at Churchill and finished an respectable 4th, although a good 6 lengths behind 3rd place Signalman. Since there are no points races in Kentucky until mid march, like other Kentucky based trainers, Bret Calhoun will probably ship him south into the Risen Star or Southwest, as I would highly expect him to resume racing this month with only 2 points.
.
5. Improbable is very probable to run in the Kentucky Derby, and as a Baffert’s #2 horse, don’t misunderestimate him. He blew away the field in the Los Alamitos Cashcall Futurity, beating his other stablemate Mucho Gusto by 5 lengths and remaining undefeated. Last year Baffert’s #2 became a Triple Crown winner. Baffert usually splits up his top 2 horses, keeping one at home in SoCal and shipping one to the southeast to run a Southwest/Rebel prep track, so I’m predicting he’s probable to appear at Oaklawn or Fairgrounds soon.
.
6 . Mucho Gusto is currently Baffert’s 3rd ranked 3yo, giving him 3 viable Derby contenders. He was 2nd place 5 lengths back to undefeated Improbable in the Los Al futurity, but still 3 lengths ahead of the rest. Last out he proved that he’s also a stakes champion, winning the Robert B Lewis on Feb.2 in convincing fashion over proven graded stakes winner Gunmetal Gray, who consequently moves down a notch.
.
7. Gunmetal Gray may have finished well behind the top 3 on this list in the BCJ, but he was probably way too far back to ever win it. Running from last place at the start, he was still 2nd to last after ¾ mile and made a big run for 5th. He then returned home to SoCal and had no problem going from last to first to win the Sham G3 to open the year on Jan.5. Last out he tried to catch Mucho Gusto in the Robert Lewis G3 to no avail.
.
8. Harvey Wallbanger burst onto the Kentucky Derby scene with a last to first win in the Holy Bull G2 on Feb.2, edging out Everfast and Remsen winner Maximus Mischief. Prior to that, he took 4 turns to break his maiden, but finally got a legit pace to run at in his first stakes contest, and made the most of it with his good closing pace at 29-1. Kenny McPeek now has 2 legit Derby contenders this year.
.
Harvey Wallbanger last to first in the Holy Bull G2 Feb.2 2019

Harvey Wallbanger last to first in the Holy Bull G2 Feb.2 2019

.
9. Everfast also came crashing back onto the Triple Crown Trail with a 2nd place finish in the Holy Bull G2 at 128-1. After looking like he was fading in 4th in the stretch, he stayed on to edge out Remsen winner Maximus Mischief by a neck. Last year he stumbled around on the TC Trail, with 2 subpar preps and 1 abysmal performance in the KYJC G2, but Romans wouldn’t have had him in 3 graded races if he didn’t see the potential, which was on display Feb.2.
.
10. Maximus Mischief did not participate in the Kentucky juvenile scene last year, but remained in the northeast, where he was 3 for 3 after the Remsen G2 win in December. I reluctantly included him in the top 10 last time because he hadn’t beat anyone of note. He still hasn’t really done that, but finished a strong 3rd just a length or so back in the Holy Bull G2 Feb.2. It looked he was going too fast early, trying to keep up with pace setter Epic Dreamer who wound up 4th. But that’s his running style, and could be the big chink in his armor.
.
11. War of Will looked impressive in winning the Lecomte G3 by 4 lengths against some marginal competition, namely Sugar Bowl Stakes 2nd and 3rd place finishers Manny Wah and Hog Creek Hustle, who also finished in the money in that race. The fractional and final times for that race are not very impressive at all, so it’s impossible to rank him any higher than this, but he is a prep winner.
.
12. Instagrand has zero points and hasn’t run against the serious competition yet, but did win the Best Pal G2 last out at Del Mar, by 10 lengths. That was in August, and we hear reports that he’s having some nice workouts recently, but we need to see him race again to move him up any farther than this. Hollendorfer has 2 main options. He can run him in the San Vicente and probably win but pick up no points, or see if he’s Derby trail material and move him into the RB Lewis and start getting points. The bottom line is if he doesn’t prep this month, this will be his last time in our top 12.

.
Next Derby Dozen will be done when deemed necessary.

Sam Houston Sunday Jan.27: Ladies Classic G3, John B Connally Turf Cup G3, 4 other Stakes. Grid

.
Sunday, January 27, 2019. Sam Houston Race Track. Today’s racing features the Houston Ladies Classic G3 8.5 dirt, and John B. Connally Turf Cup G3 at 12f.
.

.
The Ladies Classic includes a field of just 6 after a scratch, 5 brave enough to take on Midnight Bisou, a Grade 1 winner who finished 3rd, 1 length back in the BC Distaff G1 last out, rounding out the year in excellent form.
.
On paper, the only fillies with a real shot at her is 2nd ML choice Remedy, coming off 2 2nd place G3 finishes, and G2 winner Prado’s Sweet Ride. The other 3 are hoping for some 3rd or 4th place purse money.
.
In the Connally, former BC Turf participant Bigger Picture is definitely the 1 to beat, with Markitoff seeming to have the only realistic shot. But hold on, Zapperini and Lawless West are the only 2 natural early runners and thus could make speed hold up for a while, at great odds.
