Florida Derby Day Gulfstream Park Post-Race Day Analysis

Saturday, April 2
Gulfstream Park
.

Occasionally, we do some recapping to show how you could have used the Grid and/or our analysis to help win some money on a particular race day. This is a good day to do just that.
.
So, let’s see what we said about Saturday’s Gulfstream card, verbatim from the analysis written the day before, and compare it with the results. Initial Florida Derby Day analysis here.
.
R14: Key Nyquist/Mohaymen at 1-2/2-1 then Fellowship/Takeittotheedge at 3-4/4-3
Result: Nyquist won gate to wire, Mohaymen 4th, Majesto 2nd and Fellowship 3rd as usual, at 16-1.

It’s worth noting that in our Derby Dozen, Nyquist has been ranked #1 all year, despite having only one race, and a sprint at that. All other rankings to my knowledge were quick to replace him with Mohaymen a month or two ago, or even Gun Runner. Today we proved to not have the knee-jerk rankings that others do. In fact, next week’s Kentucky Derby Dozen rankings won’t change much in the top 5. Nyquist will stay #1 obviously.

Backtracking from the Fla Derby:
R13: Pan Am G2
The top late runner in this 12f turf race is Twilight Eclipse at 6-1 ML. 2nd in LP is Montclair 12-1.
Result: Both horses mentioned scratched. Chalk finished 1-2-3
.
R12: Honey Fox G2
Chalk is sound but try key in some value with Elusive Collection 10-1, Celestine 8-1, EB Ryder 20-1.
Result: Celestine won at 5-1, Elusive was 4th, EB scratched late
.
R11: Orchid G3
Lone E runner Quiet Kitten is at 8-1 for the 11f race; top late runner Crisolles is EP6 at 5-1; top closer Songofficeandfire is 10-1
Result: Fav won at even money, Songoficeandfire 2nd at 9-1
.
R10: Sir Shackleton 100k
Looks chalky and only 7f, but top late runners are Brothersofthetime 6-1 and Squadron A 10-1 who lost rider last time out.
Result: Grand Shores won at 4-1, Squadron A 2nd at 7-1, Brothersofthetime 3rd at 3-1
.
R9: MSW3
The traditional MSW where connections will see how their 3yo’s stack up to the Fla Derby field without getting trounced by the top 3yo’s. Just for fun, throw in value with Chad Brown’s Active Management at 12-1 and Reid Nagle’s Fire on Fire 30-1.
Result: Fav won at 3-2, followed by 2nd public choice
.
R8: Appleton G3
Top early runners Sky Captain 10-1 and Reporting Star 6-1 in a field devoid of speed.
Result: Reporting Star won at 8-1, Sky Captain 4th at 6-1, chalk sandwiched in between
.
R7: GP Oaks G2
Ghostzapper filly Go Maggie Go 6-1 makes her 2nd start for Dale Romans.
Result: Go Maggie Go won at 4-1
.
R6: MSW3 turf
Mark Casse’s Conquest Stormy is 5-1 and top LP but will likely be favored at post.
Result: Conquest Stormy finished 4th in a paceless race that became chaotic.
.
R5: Skipaway G3
Valid 1-1 is a valid favorite. Only value maybe top plodder/closer Hesinfront at 12-1
Result: Valid won at 2-5 followed by some chalk and a long shot.
.
So, if you can’t see how the Grid could have helped you make some money today, you need to take a look at it, and read the accompanying analysis.
