Breeders’ Cup Friday Spotlight Race: The BC Juvenile Friday Nov.5 Precap

.

Friday, November 4, 2021.  Del Mar, California. The November Stakes racing has begun!

Yes folks, Breeders’ Cup is here already. It starts today, Friday November 5 at Del Mar with BC Juvenile day.  The amazing day of racing includes 9 juvenile stakes races, including 5 graded stakes races and of course the Grade 1 BC Juvenile.  Over 110 horses are slated to run in 10 races.

BC JUVENILE G1 2YO C&G

Let’s get right to the point: we’re looking at this day in racing primarily for the BC Juvenile G1, to figure out who the early contenders are for the 2022 Kentucky Derby which will also be here before you know it.  The race looks very interesting this year with 12 awesome contestants.

.

THE FAVORITES:

Jack Christopher (Munnings) 9-5 trained by Chad Brown, has done nothing wrong at all, winning both of his races including the Champagne Stakes G1 last out a month ago, and putting up a great pair of PF’s. It should be noted that Champagne winners don’t have a good record here, but he’s primed.

Corniche (Quality Road) 5-2 trained by Bob Baffert, also has won both of his races, breaking his maiden here at Del Mar, followed by an American Pharoah G1 win at Santa Anita.  We shouldn’t need to mention the fact that Baffert has won more juvenile stakes and Kentucky Derbies than anyone.

.

THE VALUE PICKS:

Pinehurst (Twirling Candy) 8-1, also coached by Baffert, is a winner of two including the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity.  He has yet to go longer than 7f but that hasn’t stopped a Bob trainee before.  He’s not behind the top stablemate and should be good to go.

Commandperformance (Union Rags) 5-1.  Todd Pletcher has this colt ready to go after a runner up finish in the Champagne, after a second in his maiden debut.  So technically he’s still a maiden, but as a late runner, they usually don’t get the right closing conditions early on.  He’ll be a stakes winner at some point.

Barossa (Into Mischief) 10-1.  Baffert’s 3rd in this race has quickly improved in his 3rd race to break his maiden.  It would be no surprise to me to see all 3 of his trainees in the superfecta.  This is technically a long shot special but we have one more section for those.

.

THE LONG SHOT SPECIALS.

Pappacap (Gun Runner) 15-1.  Shockingly, this one is not trained by Steve Asmussen, who equally of surprise has no runner in this race.  Mark Casse has supervised his 4 race career, including a Best Pal G2 win and a runner up in the American Pharoah G2, in which he could not outmatch Corniche.

Oviatt Class (Bernardini) 20-1.  Keith Desormeaux has a live long shot. He finished 3rd in the Am.Pharoah, clearly needing more pace up front for his one-run closing style. He could get the right conditions today.

Jasper Great (Arrogate) 15-1.  Hideyuki Mori is not an American household name, but he is in the Japan horse racing industry.  He bought 8 horses for Japanese buyers at Ocala this year and wouldn’t be sending this 10 length debut winner here without a good reason.

.

THE OTHERS:

You’re on your own there unless you get the Grid for the weekend, which you can below. You can see how well the American Free Handicap works for free.

.

Here’s a snapshot of the BC Juvenile Grid to help you out.  Sorry we can’t give you the full day this time. Racing begins at 2:55 ET on Fridy and 1:15ET on Saturday, so you have plenty of time to figure things out.

Of course, you can get the Grids for the entire BC weekend and all your favorite tracks right here.
