Churchill Big Juvenile Saturday Precap; American Free Handicap 2yo Rankings updated

.

September 17, 2021. The American Free Handicap (AFH) is now in its third season in this exciting year of racing.  Improvements have been made along the way and last year’s rankings proved to be quite successful in ranking the juveniles, and this is a big juvenile racing weekend.

.

The top ranked 2020 AFH 2yo highweight Essential Quality went on to win the Southwest G3, Bluegrass G2, Belmont Stakes G1, Jim Dandy G2, and Travers G1, in addition to an impressive Kentucky Derby where he got up for 4th by less than 1.5 lengths, the only race he’s ever lost.  He is currently favored for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Multiple Grade 1 winner and 3yo of the year, Essential Quality here winning the Belmont Stakes in June 2021.

.

The second ranked colt was Jackie’s Warrior has had much success this year as well, winning the Pat Day Mile G2, Amsterdam G2, and Allen Jerkens G1, adding to his 2 G1 wins as a 2yo.

.

So the 2020 rankings served a good purpose in predicting 3yo ability for the most part, and now is a great time to start paying attention to the AFH juvenile rankings with some big 2yo races coming up.

.

The expensive but impressive 1-week Kentucky Downs meet is over, but not before it paid out over $2 million to juveniles racing in turf stakes.  That makes way for Churchill Downs which opened Thursday and have plenty of stakes racing on the weekends this month.

.

On Saturday, Churchill will hold the Iroquois G3 for juvies, and Pocahontas G3 for fillies.  Interestingly, only 3 horses that won the Iroquois this century have placed on the board in the Kentucky Derby.  But it is important and it’s the first Kentucky Derby Points race in the 2022 Road to the Kentucky Derby.

.

In addition to the 11 colts and 11 fillies entered in the two stakes races, which will be run at 8.5f on Saturday, the undercard has two $120k MSW’s at 7f for juveniles in which there are 10 colts entered in each of division.  It will be interesting to see who tops out on those two.

.

Racing begins at 6PM for the Saturday night card that currently has over 100 horses slated for the 11 races.  The MSW’s will be run at 730 and 8pm, and the G3 stakes races beginning at 940pm. Get the day’s free Grid for Churchill to follow along with our breakdowns and make your own picks.

.

The Pocohontas G3 has a very competitive field of 11 fillies going for the $300k purse. Two of them are in the current AFH top 100:  Ontheonesandtwos and Lemieux.

Ontheonesandtwos is the ML favorite.  She broke maiden first out, posting the highest PF in this field, and followed that up with a 2nd in the Debutante Stakes here before having a bad trip at Saratoga.

Hidden Connection is the 2nd choice after posting an almost identical PF first out, winning at Colonial.

Joyrunner at 10-1 ML is the first long shot I like to hit, winning both races and posting the 3rd highest PF.

Goddess of Fire is the 3rd ML choice at 6-1 after breaking maiden first out at Saratoga.

Majestic D’oro at 8-1 looked strong driving off with a first out maiden win at Indiana.

Kneeships at 8-1 has posted strong PF’s and placed in a Saratoga stakes, but this will be first on dirt.

Lemieux at 10-1 is in the top 100 for a win and two 2nd’s, and has a shot here at the lone E style.

.

The Iroquois at 1010PM will have 11 competitive colts going for another $300k purse.  The only one appearing in the AFH is Roger McQueen checking in at 53.

Major General (4-1) will likely be the post favorite, winning against a strong maiden field first out with top PF at Saratoga for Todd Pletcher.

Stellar Tap 3-1 is the ML favorite after also winning a strong debut maiden race at Saratoga for Steve Asmussen also in August.

Strike Hard at 10-1 is my top long shot in this race, winning at 8f last out with the 3rd best PF in the field.

Bourbon Heist 9-2 will get action, but is still a maiden after 3 races, losing to Major General last out.

Guntown 9-2 won at 8f last out, breaking maiden and posting the 5th best PF.

Roger McQueen at 10-1 has the honor of being the only stakes winner in the field, last out at Ellis.

.

The last stakes race is the Locust Grove G3 for 3+ fillies and mares, and only has a field of 7, so be definition it won’t be as good a betting race.  But Crystal Ball has high LP which is always attractive for a 8.5f race, and a ML of 8-1 is attractive as well.

.

Woodbine will follow all that up on Sunday with 4 juvenile stakes on turf, including the Grade 1 Natalma and Summer stakes which will issue Breeders’ Cup berths to juvies and fillies for the alternative BC juvy turf races.  Albuquerque even gets in the mix with a $200k futurity on Sunday.

.

After that we will once again update the AFH 2yo rankings with the earnings and results for those races, all of which are used for the juvenile rankings, which will continue to be updated for the rest of the year.

The end-of-year rankings are of course the most accurate since they will take into account all of the big 2yo stakes races and earnings for this year.  Hopefully they will be just as effective as last year.

Kentucky Downs Saturday: 5 Graded Stakes worth $4 million in purses and 2 Breeders’ Cup berths

.

Saturday, September 11, 2021.  Kentucky Downs will be wrapping up it’s short lived but high priced meet tomorrow, but not before holding 5 graded stakes races today worth over $4 million in purse money.  2 of the races will issue an automatic Breeders’ Cup berth to the winner.

.

Kentucky Downs is known in horseplayer circles for a few things.  1. They have the shortest meet in North America.  2.  They have the largest average purse size in North American racing.  3.  They have the largest average field size. And 4. All their races are on turf.  Racing begins at 1:20pm.

Kentucky Downs, with the largest average purse sizes in North America, began its fall meet on Aug.31
Kentucky Downs has the largest average purse sizes in North America

.

Consistent with their form, they have 125 horses running in their 11 turf races after morning scratches today.  There are only 2 races with field size of under 11, and 0 with fields of less than 9.  Get today’s Free Grid here to follow along and make your picks.  Scratches have already been removed from this file.

.

The slew of stakes racing begins at about 4pm with the Mint Ladies Sprint G3 for females competing for $600k.  6.5f is a tad too long to just go with the highest speed, but considering Superstition is also top in Power rating and has a good stakes record, it’s easy to pick her at 4-1.

Second in speed is Yes It’s Ginger, who’s in great form right now and 12-1 looks attractive, but hasn’t raced farther than 5.5f in a long time.

Next are Jakarta who we’ll ignore, and the favorite Venetian Harbor, whose last turf race was a G2 win at this distance.

But I wouldn’t be afraid to plug in the top LP runners into your exotics here.  Catch a Bid at 8-1 and Gogo Shoes at 30-1(!!!) should both excel at this distance, especially if a speed battle ensues.  Constantia would also do well in that scenario but is only 5-1.

.

Next, the Ladies Turf G3 will begin at about 4:35pm, with 9 talented mostly 5yo mares competing at a mile for $750k.  I really wouldn’t be afraid to single the favorite Princess Grace here, who is tops in Power and stamina. But you can never ignore the top LP’s at a mile.  She’sonthewarpath and Summer in Saratoga both offer good value here.

.

The 6f Turf Sprint G3 will begin at about 5:10pm and this one is really weird for a sprint because there’s literally only one early runner on paper.  I’m assuming most of the riders know this and won’t let Bombard just have it her own way up front at 10-1 for a berth to the BC Turf Sprint and the winner’s share of the $1 million purse.

Imprimis at 6-1 has top Power rating and every right to win this with a smart ride by Irad.  The favorite Casa Creed is top in LP and Stamina but will have to move up earlier than usual.  Same goes for the late running Fast Boat at 10-1 who won the Troy last out beating several others in this field. She also has a pair of the best PF’s of the last 4 outings.

.

The Calumet Turf Cup G2 begins at 5:45pm with 13 of the top turf routers racing for a BC Turf berth and another $1 million purse.

There’s not much in the form of early speed in this one, so don’t be surprised to see Channel Cat go off as the favorite and hold on to the front end for a piece of the pie.  Tide of the Sea will also be in the early mix and has mostly excelled at this distance in the past.

What do you do when the top LP at 12f is at 15-1?  You bet on Glynn County of course. Also registering high on the LP and Stamina scales are favored Arklow, 12-1 Fantasioso, and 15-1 Imperador.

.

The last but not least stakes race is the Franklin Simpson G2 for 3yo’s only going 6.5f on turf for a $600k purse.  Again, very little early speed for a sprint, giving Into the Sunrise a very legitimate shot at 12-1, with top Speed, EP and 2nd in Power ratings.

County Final should press the pace early and has great value at 8-1.  Next could come Next at 5-1, cutting back from route distance.

Favored Point Me By is also cutting back and with top LP and Power is impossible to ignore here.

.

The last race of the day is a high dollar MSW for 2yo’s going 8f, and there is some great value in this one with lots of great trainers and promising juveniles.

.

That’s it for today’s precap.  Remember you can get the Grid for all your favorite tracks and races, every race day, using this link.

Saratoga Hopeful G1 tops big Labor Day card at the Spa, 4 2yo races.

.

Monday, September 6, 2021.  It’s Labor Day in America and Saratoga is hosting a 12 race card with over 100 horses competing.  The featured Grade 1 Hopeful has 11 of the top juveniles on the east coast.  3 other MSW’s for 2yo’s are on the undercard along with the Bernard Baruch G2.

.

We’ll break down the Hopeful and point out some other good long shot specials.  Racing was underway at 12:35 and the first 2yo races is at 1:10.  You’ll want to get today’s free grid to follow along.

.

Race 2 is the first MSW for 2yo fillies going 5.5f on dirt for an $85k purse.  Of the 3 that have actually raced, the one with the top PF is at 12-1 ML, who lost by 4 lengths first out.  The oddsmaker apparently believes the winner will be a first time starter from Horacio Depaz, Linda Rice, or Jorge Abreu.  Very possible, and the 1-1A entry will be tough to beat.

.

A late scratch in Race 3 the Bernard Baruch G2 of the morning line favorite makes it impossible to bet that race.  The current long shot is 7-2 but it will be run on the yielding turf.

.

The 2nd MSW in Race 7 has 9 juveniles going 6f on dirt at 6f.  The only one raced yet is the favored Don’t Wait Up, who lost by a nose in his 6f debut here last month, for Tony Dutrow.  In that one, he registered a PF higher than the average last out of the Hopeful field.  In fact, the horse that beat him is in the Hopeful today.  However, first timers from Pletcher, Chad Brown, Brad Cox, and Asmussen will make it interesting.

.

Race 8 will have 2yo fillies running 8.5f on turf.  The 2 favorites each ran a strong 2nd place in their debuts last month here at the same distance for Brown and Clement. You might get value on the 1st timers by Brown  and Pletcher.  For a long shot, the speedy Bill Mott trainee switches to turf route.

.

Alas, Race 10 is the Hopeful Stakes with the aforementioned 11 of the top east cost juveniles, 5 of which broke maiden in NY state.

The favorite is and will be Wit, who won at first ask for Pletcher and romped in the Sanford G3 here by 8 lengths in July.

.

2021 Sanford Stakes winner Wit at Saratoga

.

The favorite is and will be Wit, who won at first ask for Pletcher and romped in the Sanford G3 here by 8 lengths in July.

High Oak will be the 2nd betting choice after and impressive Saratoga Special G2 win here over Gunite last month at 6.5f, giving him the best PF in the field so far, and the #1 ranking in this week’s current American Free Handicap.

Defend 6-1 has the 2nd best PF in the field for his debut win by 8 lengths at a 5.5f MSW in Delaware.

The aforementioned Power Agenda at 10-1 nosed out his rival in the debut for Pletcher at a 6f MSW here last month.

Others not mentioned will need a big step up in class in order to hit the board here.

.

Del Mar Debutante Day Decisions: 4 2yo filly races including G1 Debutante and Juve Filly Turf Stakes.

.

Sunday, September 5, 2021.  Del Mar has a rare excellent card today with 4 races dedicated to juvenile fillies, including the featured Debutante G1 preceded by the Juvenile Filly Turf Stakes.  2 other MSW’s for 2yo fillies, 1 on turf and 1 on dirt.  9 of the 11 races are for female horses.

.

Saratoga has a similar card today with the featured Spinaway G1 for 2yo fillies, and both will have their featured male 2yo G1’s tomorrow on Labor Day.  So it’s an excellent weekend for the sport of kings, and speaking of kings, happy birthday to Louis XIV, Louis VIII, and Peter IV today.

.

I’m too busy today watching horse racing and golf to break down every race for you, but at least we’ll look at the Debutante in a bit of detail, then you can use today’s free Del Mar Grid to find some good long shots.  With over 100 horses after morning scratches, you will find some value.

.

Also take note that the Jackpot Pick 6 carries over half a $million into the day so it will likely go upwards of $2 million today, so there’s a chance to make some bank on that.

.

R10 9:07ET 7f D DMrDeb-G1 2 YO F

As usual, Baffert is playing with a stacked deck with 2 of the 8 fillies.  Interestingly, his 5-1 Grace Adler is the first time winner, and his favored Eda hasn’t won yet, but rather got nosed out in both races, including last out the Sorrento G2.

Elm Drive headed Eda in the 2021 Sorrento G2 at Del Mar.

The winner of that race, Elm Drive, will start adjacent to Eda for Phil D’Amato and is a virtual co-favorite, but it’s hard to beat Baffert’s top filly twice in a row.  The abundance of speed in this one bodes well for Grace Adler, the only non-early runner in the race.

Dance To The Music, conjuring up memories of Sly and Family Stone, has the best first time PF on the board, winning at first ask here at Del Mar.  She will be the 3rd co-favorite.

Prediction:  2 3 4 7

.

There are 11 races so you’re sure to find plenty of value among the 11 races and 100+ horses.  Remember you can get the Grid for all your favorite tracks and races here.  Good luck!

September 4 Saturday at Saratoga Stakes Stats: 2 Breeders’ Cup Challenge G1’s, 2 more graded stakes; Long shot specials

.

Saturday, September 4, 2021.  Saratoga is ending its meet in style this Labor Day weekend with a slew of graded stakes races.  Today the Grade 1 races include two Breeders’ Cup Challenge win-and-in races:  The Flower Bowl for the BC Filly/Mare Turf, and the Jockey Club Gold Cup for the BC Classic.

.

Two more graded races are on the card with the Prioress G2 and Saranac G3.  Unfortunately, 3 of these races have fields of only 6 and one of them has only 5 due to a morning scratch.  But there are also some intriguing MSW’s including 2 for 2yo’s.  The 12 race card went underway at 12:35PM.

.

We will point out some good long shot specials and other plays today to get you some good earnings. Get today’s free Saratoga Grid to follow along and make your picks.

.

R3 has a good long shot special with Waxman, a first timer coached by Pletcher at 8-1ML.  Yes the chalk is solid but it’s a maiden race so keep in mind both are winless.  Ubiquitous at 6-1 ML has top PF at distance.

.

R4 again has a solid favorite but Harper’s in Charge has top speed switching to turf, only 4-1.  Fort Drum won last out first on turf, 2nd career race, with 2nd best PF in the field, 15-1.

.

R5 is the Prioress G2 with a field of 5 so there won’t be any viable long shots despite what the ML’s say.

.

R6 is a MSW for 2yo’s on turf. I’ll Figure It Out goes first time on turf, 2nd career race, with top EP at 12-1.  Southern Sense tries turf for the first time, high dirt PF in field at 20-1.  With all of that said, Pletcher’s first timer Annapolis will probably win at 2-1.

.

Race 7 is a MSW for 2yo’s on dirt at 7f.  Only 2 have run and lost narrowly their first time out.  However, another Pletcher first timer at 7-2, and a Barclay Tagg unraced at 15-1.  Anything can happen.

.

Race 8 is the Saranac G3 with a chalky field of 6,, but I’ll give Mohs at 12-1 ML a shot to hit the board.

.

Race 9 has good looking chalk again, but Tax me Naught first time on turf at 20-1 and Golden Oldie with top LP at 10-1 are impossible to ignore.

.

Race 10 looks like a 2 horse race, 1 of them being Baby Yoda at 6-1 ML, but those odds will probably reduce.

.

Race 11 is the Flower Bowl G1, with a field of only 6.  La Signare at 5-1 is my top pick and American Bridge is in North America for the first time at 12-1 after a G3 win last out.

.

Race 12 the JCGC G1 at 10f looks very chalky, but Night Ops has top LP at 5-1, and don’t be surprised to see Forewarned hit the board but it will be much less than the ridiculous 50-1 ML.

Happy Saver held on to win the 2020 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont

.

That’s it for today, see there’s some value in every race with good long shot specials scattered around.  The first two races of the day were 5-1 winners and there could be some more at better odds.

.

You can get the Grid for all your favorite tracks and races every race day here.  Good luck!

Friday Aug.27 Precap: Chillin at Charles Town with the Classic, Oaks, and 6 other stakes races

.

Friday, August 27, 2021.  Charles Town is running under the lights tonight, starting a stakes-packed card at 5PM ET.  Races include the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic, Grade 3 Oaks, and 6 other stakes races.  That’s 8 stakes races for an action packed evening that will last until 11PM ET.  Weather: cloudy.

.

After early scratches, there are still 114 horses scheduled to run in 13 races, so the field sizes are mostly very solid in almost every race.  Let’s break down a few of the stakes races and point out some long shot specials.  First, you’ll want to look at today’s free Charles Town Grid to follow along.

.

R12:  The Charles Town Classic G2 is the feature race tonight, with a field of 10 talented route-runners from around the country racing 9f for an $800k purse. Their collective last races out were run at 9 different tracks.

Art Collector, the ML favorite, was one of the favorites for the Kentucky Derby last year after going undefeated in his preps.  He had 3 subpar stakes races before bouncing back to win the Alydar Stakes earlier this month for Mr. Mott.

Warrior’s Charge is the 2nd ML choice and while he hasn’t actually won since the Razorback G3 in Feb.2020, he always competes and finished 2nd in the Stephen Foster G2 in June for Brad Cox.

Sleepy Eyes Todd is listed at 6-1 and could do very well returning to the scene of his greatest achievement, which was winning this race last year.  I remember that well, as I predicted him to finish top 2 in that race at 10-1 in last year’s version of this article.  Somebody obviously read that precap and he wound up running away with it by 7 lengths at 5-2.  In his past 4, he was over his head in 3 G1’s and had a bad trip last out.

Sleepy Eyes Todd ran away with the 2020 Charles Town Classic G2 by 7 lengths. (Coady photo)

NY Traffic at 8-1 ML qualifies as the first real long shot special, although having said that, he will probably end up at 5-1 or less. With his frontrunning style and ability to stay on during the stretch, it may be that nobody keeps up with him.

Noble Drama is listed at 8-1 and keeps on competing ably.  He’s rattled off a couple handicap wins and has the top overall PF on the board.  And why not use the top LP in a 9f race?

Prediction:  8 1 7 6 2 3 4

.

R11:  The Charles Town Oaks G2 has 10 3yo fillies competing at 7f for a $400k purse on the dirt track.  Again, these young lassies ran their last race at 9 different tracks around the country.  Most are stakes winners and all are stakes placed.

Caramel Swirl is the morning predictable morning line favorite at 5-2, but repeating her breakout performance last out in an allowance is doubtful.

Pauline’s Pearl (3-1) could be the post time favorite, coached by Asmussen and a Grade 3 winner at 8.5f cutting back to 7f is a good angle.  Did I mention she has top LP?

R Adios Jersey at 12-1 ML is undefeated in 4 races, winning her debut by 12 lengths and improving every race, including a stakes win last out.  The 5 month layoff is a concern but as a 3yo she probably also put on some muscle during that time and may improve again.  I doubt anyone can match her speed for 7f.

Street Lute also has some speed and wins a lot.  Her last 3 races at this distance were all stakes wins at Laurel.

Prediction:  8 1 3 6 2

.

I’m not going to break down every race, but there are some great ML long shots in just about every race, such as Letmeno at 10-1 in race 10.  Keep in mind that a lot of people will be using the Grid tonight so the odds on all the great long shots could go down.

.

As usual, you can get the Grid for all your favorite tracks and races right here.  Good luck!

Del Mar Friday the 13th Night Card Precap: Scary Big Jackpot 6 Carryover of $1.2 million

.

Friday, August 13, 2021.  Del Mar has an eerily good race card tonight and a frightening Jackpot 6 carryover of almost 1 and a quarter million bucks.  Since the racing doesn’t start until 4PM local, that gives a lot east coasters a chance to pitch in, and the Jackpot should easily exceed $3 million.

.

The 8 race card starts at 7PM ET and has an average of 8 runners per race after morning scratches.  The Jackpot Pick 6 sequence will begin in race 3, scheduled for 8PM ET.  As we know, that will be delayed for 5-10 minutes as they allow as many as possible to get in their Pick 6 bets.

.

The only true short field will be in race 2, so the Pick 6 will still offer plenty of options, even enough for a possible unique Jackpot payout.  Most likely there won’t be a unique payout tonight, but there good still be some good non-jackpot payouts.

.

There are some good longshots on the card, like Grigoro in 4, Candy Man in 5, and Fast As Cass in 6, among others that you can figure out using the Grid.  Grab today’s free grid here to make your picks.

.

Perhaps the highlight of the evening for racing fans will by Race 7, where Hutcheson winner Willy Boi, who placed in other stakes, came across country to take on local champ Good With People, who won two stakes here last year.  But there is plenty of talent to go around in this field.

Hutcheson Stakes winner Willy Boi

.

The last race is a maiden with some first timers combined with others highly unproven, so that will be a good time to have a long shot pick come in.  Don’t be scared, you need some good long shots to come in for a unique winning ticket. Good luck!

.

As always, you can get the Grid for all your favorite tracks and races, every race day right here.

August 2021 Thoroughbred Stakes Schedule, North America and Japan Racing Association

August 1, 2021.  The Thoroughbred Stakes Schedule for North America and Japan is updated and released today.  As usual, Saratoga and Del Mar will own the most graded stakes, but Woodbine, Colonial, Charles Town, and Ellis Park will chime in with some great stakes racing.
