Saturday, October 5, 2019. Keeneland continues its huge opening fall meet weekend with 4 Breeders’ Cup Challenge races today, including the Breeders’ Futurity G1, First Lady G1, Shadwell Turf Mile G1, and Thoroughbred Club of America G2. The Woodford G2 is also on the card but is not a BCC race. It’s a great race day to watch horses try to secure the BC berths with 4 weeks to go.

This adds to the 2 BCC races on Friday: the Darley Alcibiades G1 and Stoll Keenon Ogden Phoenix G2, and 3 more on Sunday, including the Dixiana Bourbon G3, Indian Summer, and Juddmonte Spinster G1. Now you see why we call it a huge opening weekend, eclipsing Belmont’s impressive 5 BCC races which include the Champagne G1 and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic G1 today.

In addition to the 5 graded stakes races today, Keeneland also has an assortment of 3 maiden special weight and an optional claimer for 2yo’s, making it a big juvenile day as well. So there’s plenty of room for the 2yo’s who don’t quite fit into the G1 class right now. In all, 56 juveniles, male and female, are scheduled to race today after the early scratches.

The 10 horse Futurity field looks very competitive, all of them being MSW winners and 1 stakes winner By Your Side, who won the Sanford G3. It looks like some of them may have preferred to run in the Champagne G1 today but that field is led by Saratoga Special G2 winner Green Light Go and Tiz the Law, who has the highest Grid PF of any in both fields today due to his debut win.

You can look at what the Grid has to say about it for yourself, but 1 thing it will tell you is the Futurity field has a lot of speed. However, from history, we know that much of the speed is usually hard rated early in an attempt to conserve energy in their first mile+ race. So it could still go either way, depending on how they rate.
.
But it’s worth mentioning Maxfield, an S0 at 12-1 ML is the sole dead closer so far, and has the highest LP rating, based on his only race, a MSW win at a mile at Churchill. That was won after coming from way back the way a closer always does. The others worth mentioning are the chalk and the stakes winner who’s at 6-1, so Maxfield may be the only valid long shot in this one. But you never know with juvies.

In the Acorn G1, she put away two others in this field, Serengeti Empress and Jeltrin, with relative ease.

Serengeti Empress won the Kentucky Oaks this year and would like to be unpressured up front to stay ahead of Guarana this time. But that appears unlikely as more than half the field would like to have the early lead. With a usually good late kick, Street Band appears to be the best non-Guarana pick here.

Saturday, September 14, 2019. Woodbine begins the first of 4 Grade 1 races this weekend with the Woodbine Mile, which is an automatic Breeders’ Cup Mile qualifier for the winner. Following that is the Northern Dancer G1, in which the winner may get into the BC Turf but is not automatic.

The Woodbine Mile (turf) attracts a competitive field of 11, led by the filly Got Stormy, who took the boys boy storm last out winning the Fourstardave G1 at Saratoga, beating 2nd choice Raging Bull by 2.5 lengths. Other serious contenders are mid shots Lucullan, Synchrony and Awesome Tank.

With no definite BC berth on the line, the Northern Dancer (turf) only can get 6 competitors, also because they are afraid to take on foreign invader Old Persian. The best possibilities for the Americans are Tiz a Slam from the front end and Focus Group from the rear.

Friday, August 23, 2019. It’s that time of year again: Travers Weekend! That’s right, Saratoga has 6 stakes races today in preparation for the always highly anticipated Travers day tomorrow, which will have 7 stakes races on the card, all but one of which are Grade 1 events.
* Update 4pm Sat: Dirt track seems to be favoring late runners, so beware every time it’s said “not much speed” it could still go to the LP and closers.

The Travers, aka MidSummer Derby, of course is the highlight race worth $1.25 million but there will be over $5 million in purses available throughout the race card. We’ll start at the top with the Travers and work backwards a bit.
.

.
Tacitus is the deserving favorite, the most consistent horse in the 3yo division not named Maximum Security. Tacitus has good tactical speed and followed up his 4th in the Derby with 2nd in the Belmont and Dandy and has the Grid’s 3rd best LP.
.
Code of Honor could be the 2nd choice and edged out Tacitus in the Derby and since then notched a Dwyer win against marginal competition. He has the Grid’s top LP and would like a fast pace up front.
.
Tax lost a close one to Tacitus in the Wood, then had a horrid Derby, came back to lose again to Tacitus in the Belmont, then finally turned the tables on him in the Dandy last out, holding on for dear life by less than a length to the tremendous late charge.
.
Mucho Gusto will also be single digit odds and was last out 2nd in the Haskell. He has 2nd best EP.
.
Owendale has the 2nd best LP in the Grid and has been very solid recently, following up his Lexington win with 3rd in the Preakness and an Ohio Derby win. That does it for the single digit competitors.

Highest Honors and Looking at Bikinis are entered by Chad Brown and both are 10-1 morning line. Highest Honors is better after winning his last 2 including the Curlin stakes here, 6.5 lengths ahead of the stablemate, who does have highest EP but doesn’t look like a great 10f fit.
.
Endorsed is the long shot I like the best, with 2nd best EP in the Grid. He lost the stretch duel with Highest Honors last out but without much speed in this field he could hold on this time. And 15-1 is a great price.
.
There could be some good payouts here depending on how it plays out, but on paper so far I like it: Mucho Gusto, Endorsed, Tacitus, Highest Honors, Tax, and Scars are Cool (super long shot). If Code of Honor and Owendale don’t hit then it will pay really well, however given that they’re top 2 LP and combine Tacitus with them, to form the lowest paying trifecta in Travers history.

Sword Dancer G1:
Ya Primo shipped from some other hemisphere in time to run 2nd in the Bowling Green G2 here a month ago, closing hard at the end but falling ½ length short of the victory for Chad Brown. He has the top LP in the Grid, and should be the favorite, but for now…
.
Annals of Time is the morning line favorite for Chad Brown, after running 1st and 2nd in his 2 OCM’s this year, 1st in an OCM last year, and winning a G1 to close out 2016. That’s right, he’s raced 3 times since 2016, and appears to be doing very well this year.
.
Channel Cat got the win in the Bowling Green, going gate to wire under an apparently comfortable pace for Todd Pletcher, and is at 5-1 morning line. Given that this race is almost devoid of speed, he could do it again.
.
Channel Maker at 3-1, not to be confused with Channel Cat, was 4th in the Bowling Green but only a length back, also trying to close on the front runner but running out of room.
.
Sadler’s Joy is the last single digit horse, another late runner who finished 1.25 back in the Bowling Green. As aforementioned, this race has almost no speed in it, so late closers beware.
.
The best long shot on the board by far, and with a good shot, is Proven Reserves in his first turf start. Good early speed, good PF’s overall, and a 30-1 morning line.
.
The best bet will be some kind of mix with all 3 Chad horses and 2 Channel horses. Maybe just box those 5 is the answer.
.
Ballerina G1
The 5 filly and mare field after scratches doesn’t make it a great betting race, and Special Relativity’s odds will definitely come down from ML and she would win if she runs her last race back. Unless Come Dancing runs her last 7f race which was the Distaff win 3 back, in which case chalk. Even Dawn the Destroyer would have a good chance if she runs the form she opened the year with. Just wheel all at the bottom of a cheap tri and try to catch those long shots.

H Allen Jerkens G1
Shancelot 1-2 is the obvious horse to beat. He’s 3 for 3 and last seen winning the Amsterdam G2 here by 12 lengths 4 weeks ago. An extra ½ f isn’t going to kill him, especially with the lack of much other speed. He’s #1 across the board except 1 point short of top LP.
.
Borracho 8-1 ML has the top LP and represents the primary challenge to the favorite but even if he runs his best race, Shancelot will have to put in his worst career race.
.
Call Paul at 15-1 is the only other front running type and will likely challenge the favorite for the lead early, and due to lack of many others up front, could hold on for a piece.
.
Hog Creek Hustle returned to sprint in glorious fashion, last out beating 10 others in the Stephens G1 at this same distance at Belmont. Nitrous finished 2nd in that race by only ¼ length, and Mind Control was a few lengthsback, and needs to regain his Bay Shore form.
.
Because of Shancelot, it’s not a great betting race, but I would do something like Shancelot on top of Barracho, Hog Creek Hustle, and Call Paul, with the others I mentioned at the bottom of super.
.
Ballston Spa G2

Secret Message is the ML favorite, but Fifty Five is actually the top late runner with highest LP. Long shot Hogan’s Holiday actually has 2nd best LP, and 3rd is a tie with Secret Message and early runner Significant Form. But alas there’s not much speed in this race.

Starship Jubilee could wind up as the favorite and is my pick to win, after running midpack she’ll tell the closers catch me if you can. Conquest Hardcandy is my best long shot to hit the board, with top EP she’ll be out near the front and hold on for a piece of the action, and might even win. Good betting race.

Personal Ensign G1

You have to like top LP in a 9f race right? Especially when it’s an early runner. The top 3 LP’s here in order, all within 2 points of each other: Golden Award, Midnight Bisous, and Elate. A mid longshot and 2 favorites. 4th LP is midpack presser Wow Cat. I’ll probably put them in that order, and give She’s a Julie a chance to hit the board at the bottom since there’s not much speed as usual.

Wednesday, August 21. The big news of the week is Saratoga race track reaching its climax with the always highly anticipated Travers weekend. They’ll have 1 stakes race today, 2 tomorrow, and 6 on Friday, leading up to the Big Saturday with 8 stakes races, all but one of which are Grade 1 events.

Of course the highlight race is the 150th running of the $1.25 million Travers, but there is also $3.5 million up for grabs in the other graded stakes races, for a total of over $5 million in purse money offered on the day. So we’re breaking down the Travers and some of the other races right here on this page.
.
We’re also going to try something new with the Grid. Realizing that some people don’t want or need any handicapping materials for more than a short period of time here and there, we’re offering a 1 week only plan!

Last week our members got over 25 Grids for over a dozen different tracks, including of course every race day for Saratoga, Del Mar, etc. You could alternately buy a big black and white book at the track each day for $5 or whatever they’re charging now.

The Grid is also portable and I often use it on my medium sized phone or tablet, so if you have a smartphone with a decent sized screen or small tablet, it’s ideal to just pull up the Grid on that instead of carrying around an overpriced, oversized book with you.

Saturday, August 17, 2019. The Del Mar summer meet has a big day with the featured Pacific Classic G1 and several graded stakes on the undercard, including Del Mar Handicap G2 and two races for 3yo fillies: the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks on turf, and Torrey Pines G3 on dirt.

While it’s true that most of the top horses are Easterly located as usual, especially with the Saratoga meet going on, some of the best are congregating at Del Mar and since the Pac Classic offers a Breeders’ Cup Classic berth to the winner, some East Coast horses have shipped over.
.
Seeking the Soul is perhaps the favorite and already has his BCC berth after winning the Stephen Foster G2 his last race, 2 months ago at Churchill, but Dallas Stewart is happy to run him for the money. Pavel could also be the favorite, also shipping west after a 3rd in the Suburban G2 at Belmont.
.
The 3rd ML choice is Quip, also shipping west after a narrow loss in the Foster by a ¼ length. Without a lot of speed in this race, Rudy Brisset looks for him to get the lead midway and hold on to it this time.
.
For the Top and War Story like to run early but only the latter appears to have the ability to hit the board here. Neither would be likely to hold on to a win for 10 furlongs.
.
Higher Power, Draft Pick, and Mongolian Groom are the others most likely to be part of the early pace scenario, and it would be shocking to not see at least one of them finish in the money.
.

Tenfold and Campaign will try to close late behind Pavel and Seeking the Soul, but the pace scenario today doesn’t seem to set up very well for them on paper.
.

The Del Mar Oaks G1 seems like a wide open race, with 14 fillies of similar abilities going 9f on the beautiful turf course. Camber Parc has been solid this year and deserves the favoritism that she is getting on the morning line, and has top Stamina and Power in the Grid.
.
But we’re not here to bet on favorites. Leave that to other sites who can claim they gave you winners 33% of the time because they picked favorites. Unlike when we told you Country House had top LP in the Kentucky Derby and thus was an automatic WPS bet, which at 60-1 always pays well.
.
Raymundo’s Secret filly is very interesting here. 2 lifetime starts in Jan and July gave her 6 and 5 length wins and PF which is only 2 points lower than the top mark in the field. Top EP in the Grid is a good sign as well as she will look to extend that to 9f.
.
So who has this top PF that we speak of? Front running Keeper of the Stars, also at 10-1 ML and with 2nd best EP, set the mark 2 races back with a OCM win. The lack of early speed in this race could set up for a big one by the only true front runner here.
.
If it does unfold right for the late runners, Lady Prancealot has the top LP and best chance of hitting the board. Wildlife would also appreciate such a scenario.
.
But alas it looks like a battle of early runners in this one, so we’ll put Mucho Unusual in with Keeper, Cambier, and Raymudos for the top picks. Hard Legacy and Maxim Rate will fill out the exotics along with the wild card Hidden Message in her first American race.
.
The Torrey Pines looks a bit wide open as well, but in a 8f race with several frontrunners in it, why not go with the top LP fillies? Classic Fit 3-1, Into Chocolate at 10-1, and Colonial Creed at 8-1. I also like Hollywood Hills, tied for the top PF in her first dirt race last out, at 12-1.
.
Still it’s hard to conceive the 2 front running favorites finishing off the board, Sneaking Out and Fighting Mad, but overall a good betting race for an 8 horse field.
.
In the Del Mar Handicap at 11f on turf, it’s unusual to like front runners, but in a field almost completely devoid of speed, I’d like to put the best 3 EP horses together including long shots Ritzy AP and Acclimate. Isitinthepost will likely be the favorite and can’t conceivably not hit the board.
.
It’s a late afternoon card, so the racing will start at 2pm local time and 5pm Eastern. That gives you plenty of time to download the free Grid and get ready to kick some ass. Good luck!
