Del Mar Sat.Nov.19: Desi Arnaz and Cary Grant make cameo appearances today

Saturday, November 19, 2022.  Desi Arnaz and Cary Grant will be making appearances at Del Mar, despite the fact they’ve both been dead since 1986, Desi having died in Del Mar that year in November.  Today they will be appearing as stakes races on the 9 race card beginning at 12:30 PST.

The Desi features 7 strong 2yo fillies going 7f.   The contenders, according to me:

Parody 4-1 trained by Baffert, battled for a win first out at 5f, delivering the 2nd best PF in the field.

Blessed touch 9-5 coached by Yakteen, owns the best PF, winning at 2nd ask last out at 6f.

Huntingcoco 7-2 won for Baffert easily first out at 5.5 before finishing last in the 8.5f Chandelier G2

Justique 8-5 follows the same pattern for Shirreffs, however only losing by 5 len in the Chandelier G2

Naughty Lottie 12-1 also showed little in that G2, but opened her career with a 15 length debut at LAD

We have to include here to have a legit long shot special, otherwise there are none.  All 3 of the Chandelier G2 fillies will improve while returning to a much more amicable 7f distance.

The Grant will contest 6 state breds at 7f, but it’s really only a 3 horse race between the 3 favs, but all of them will have trouble keeping up with frontrunner Big City Lights, whose only loss was at 8f.

Breeders’ Cup Saturday Spotlight Race: The Sprint G1 at Keeneland; Long Shot Special Alert

Saturday, November 5, 2022.  Breeders’ Cup Day 2 is underway on Saturday with 9 outstanding G1 races in all sorts of categories.  We’re still reeling on the heels of a 40-1 winner of the BC Turf Sprint, after the frontrunning favorite broke last and never did catch up, leaving Caravel to go gate to wire.

Caravel notched her first G1 win with the BC Turf Sprint at 40-1.

But at least the rain has held off so far in this part of Lexington.  Today our spotlight race is the BC Sprint G1 at 6f.  Everyone else is talking the Classic, so let’s be different.  Who can beat Flightline anyway?  Epicenter and Taiba are the only ones with a shot but only if the favorite doesn’t run.

.

So we’ll talk about the Sprint and a couple turf races and give you a shot at some decent money.  Take a look at the snapshot here, in which we conveniently show 2 other races by accident.

The Grid is telling us that Jackie’s Warrior is the best here, and certainly the odds of 4-5 will corroborate that.  He hasn’t lost at 6f except in this race last year, at Del Mar in his only west coast race.  The fact that he’s the only true frontrunner in a field almost devoid of speed also points to him.

.

So did we pick a bad race? Maybe, but JW still has to run it, and he can’t run 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, so let’s work out a superfecta while we’re here.  By the numbers, the 2nd ML choice Kimari looks like the most likely candidate and has the speed to hang.  After that it gets fuzzy.

Because of the pace scenario, I bring you two super long shot specials that can crash the party.

11 Flash of Mischief 30-1 cut back to sprint last out and destroyed the field. Prevailing PF’s agree.

7 Super Ocho 30-1 had trouble last out but pulled off a great performance in the SA Sprint.

5 Aloha West 12-1 has a great running style and tactical speed for this race.

Here’s how I see it and the top two are interchangeable.

In the BCFM Turf, you can see there’s some good value on Tuesday and Virginia Joy.  Chad Brown will likely have two in the trifecta or super, with 3 outstanding turf females.

.

For the BC Mile, also on turf, we might as just hand it to Modern Games, who despite his 7-2 ML, will be a prohibitive favorite.  Appleby has dominated on turf here so far, with Buick up. But again, it takes more than 1 horse to complete an exotic wager.

.

There are only two true frontrunners slated for this race, and I give one of them a good shot.

5 Smooth Like Strait 10-1 has the speed to get things done on the front end and no problem with 8f.

11 Annapolis at 10-1 manifests early speed and comes off a solid Keeneland Turf Mile G1 win.

.

The second most solid horse and 2nd ML choice is Kinross at 9-2, coming off 4 straight G1 wins in Europe.  His trainer, unlike Appleby, has had no success here yet.  Maybe he breaks through.

.

The top American closer is Domestic Spending at 8-1, with Chad Brown monitoring his progress and Flavien up, he will need to be reckoned with.

The Breeders’ Cup is getting underway with a 10 race card custom made for the 2yo’s, highlighted by 5 BC Grade 1 juvenile races to end the day.  The undercard includes two more 2yo races at 7f that will be used for comparative sakes.  Here’s the stakes rundown.

Weather in Lexington is moderate and sunny Friday before rain could move in on Saturday afternoon for day 2 of The Cup.  Today we’ll spotlight The BC Juvenile G1 slated for 5PM Friday as the 2nd to last race on the card.  Let’s break it down using the Grid.

First of all, for those who don’t know: what is the Grid? As seen in the snapshot, it’s a very colorful, concise, and condensed form of PP’s that has superior performance figures.  Put it this way, that little snippet above has as much information as 6-8 pages of standard PP’s.

.

In color, you can see the PF for each contestant’s last 10 races is color coded, green for grass, brown for dirt, and blue for artificial, and black if the track was muddy.  You can see their ML odds, running style, high PF, avg PF, sire and connections, and aggregates to the right:  LP, stamina, power, speed, and EP.

So at one glance, you can see how all the horses stack up in less than a minute. But wait, there’s more!  Behind each red marker is more information.  Full horse breeding information, the specifications of each past performance and what transpired, and the full pedigree behind the Sire cell.

.

If you have the Grid, all you need to do is click or hover over that cell to get that information.  So don’t cheat yourself, Get the Grid here and take 90% of the work out of the handicapping process.

.

Now that we got that out of the way, you can literally see from looking at it for a few seconds, that the horse to beat is indeed the favorite, undefeated Cave Rock, who has the top figures all around.  He comes off a brilliant win, 5 lengths better than National Treasure in the American Pharoah G1.

Both are surprisingly trained by Bob Baffert who will take on the inferior 8 horse east coast contingent led by Breeders’ Futurity G1 winner Forte, coached by Todd Pletcher.  We will have a chance to see if we can believe the west coast figures, but at this moment there’s no reason not to.

.

So far, not much value! Are they going to run in exact betting order at the top?  It’s possible and has happened before, but let’s at least try to get someone with value in there. I like the 5 Verifying at 10-1 and believe that he simply had trouble with the sloppy Belmont surface last out, after the 3rd best PF in the field registered in his debut.

.

If I had to bet the Super High 5 straight,  I’d do it like this:

3 4 5 6 10.  Not exactly in betting order but at least it’s in numeric order.

.

In the BC Juvenile Turf G1, you can also see at a glance that the top contender is European invader Silver Knott, and that’s not why he has yellow shading, which represents performances or birth on another continent.  You can see from the ROI section that Appleby does well in these situations.

.

Unfortunately we don’t have enough information on the foreign horses to complete the aggregates, but you can see how they stack up in general using the PF’s.

.

So that’s how the Grid works, it’s that easy.  You just look at numbers and compare them.  So don’t cheat yourself this year at the Breeders’ Cup, one of the best betting days of the year.

Conventionally you bet on top LP in the 6.5f DHT at SA, so in that case check out Aqua Seaform Shame at 12-1, also rating top in EP.  But also there’s not much speed in this one so take a look at She’s So Nice at 8-1.  Lexington Humor at 6-1 and Freedom Flyer at 4-1 also offer good value.

A field of 12 solid fillies wraps up racing in another exciting turf race.  There’s not much speed here so that’s why the favorite is 8-5, but Gracelund Gray and Pammy’s Ready are just as fast at 8-1 and 5-1.  There’s no way I’m not including Rhea Moon, top LP at 6-1, and 2LP Kitty Kitana is the best value and great long shot special.

Saturday, October 8, 2022. Keeneland is having a big time opening weekend, with 5 graded stakes races, 3 G1’s and 3 Breeders’ Cup Challenge races.  Friday opened the weekend in style with 3 graded stakes, all BCC races, on Friday.

Breeders’ Cup 2022 is held at Keeneland KY

.

Today we look forward to the Coolmore Futurity G1, Turf Mile G1, TCA G2, Woodford G2, and First Lady G1 on the 11 race card which runs from 12PM to 630PM ET.  Weather is sunny and chilly with the high scheduled to reach around 60.

At 5.5f it will be over before you know it, with Golden Pal and Artemus dueling for the top spot.  Chalk city.

Top 3 look chalky again.  5 and 8 could hit the board for good odds.

The short but talented field of 6 makes for exciting racing but not good betting.

Wow! Now we’re talking. Not only a great field of 14 talented juvies, but there are two west coast invaders in the otherwise all eastern field, thanks to Bob Baffert.

If I had just one bet allowed to be placed it would be on 2 Loggins, the likely favorite after winning his debut by 8.5 at Churchill.  

Pletcher enters the ML favorite 7 Forte who comes off a Hopeful G1 win on sloppy track, the only graded stakes winner in the field.

The only other stakes winners are 10 Lost Ark at 6-1, again with Pletcher, and Larry Rivelli coached Two Phil’s at 30-1 coming off a 10 length Canterbury win.

The most likely to complete the super are 15 Carmel Road (Baffert) and Instant Coffee (Cox), both at 5-1.  Baffert’s other entry is 8 Newgate at 20-1.

McPeek’s duo and Asmussen’s Powerful could figure into the money at long odds.

R10 5:45ET 8f T TurfMile-G1 3 UP 

Stakes racing concludes with the Coolmore Mile with 11 strong turf runners.  Some good spread out odds make for good betting.  There are only 4 of them in single digits on morning line.

Top LP in order goes to 12 Set Apiece 15-1, 6 Ivar 6-1, and 8 Annapolis 10-1, all top 5 in power.

October 2022. The Thoroughbred Stakes Racing Calendar for North America and Japan consists of 250 stakes races, 240 of which are in North America.

Keeneland opens their legendary meet the first full weekend with six BC Challenge races leading up to the Breeders’ Cup which they will host the first weekend of November.

Belmont wins the stakes race count with 32 races as they host the Aqueduct meet in what they have labeled Belmont at the Big A.

Mid September Saturday: Churchill and Woodbine Head Big Juvenile Race Days.

Saturday, September 16, 2022. Churchill and Woodbine loom large this weekend with big 2yo stakes races and MSW’s.  As we wind up towards the Breeders’ Cup in early November, the younguns are warming up for the BC Juvenile and possible Triple Crown run. 

.

Churchill Downs’ pair of G3’s include the Iroquois for 2yo’s and Pocahontas for 2yo fillies, each worth $300k.  The top finishers will likely run in the BC Juvenile but that is not guaranteed. There are also two $120k MSW’s for 2yo/2yo fillies worth paying attention to.

.

Woodbine’s pair of 2yo G1 races are each worth $500k:  the Natalma will provide an automatic BC Juvenile Fillies Turf berth, and the Summer will grant a spot in the BC Juve Turf.  The Woodbine Mile G1 will get the winner a post in the BC Mile.

.

Churchill’s slate of stakes races begins at 4:22ET.  See the Grid snapshot below of the 4 stakes races on tap. 

.

The Locust Grove G3 obviously has a short field and I doubt you’ll get Tootsie at less than 5-1 but anything over 4-1 would be a good value.

.

The Iroquois G3 field is a more exciting with 9 entries in the race, however, the 4 single digit entries, all 5-1 or less, are the only group that can win and will probably roll 1-4.  I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they finished in exact betting order.

.

The Louisville Thoroughbred Society Stakes is an interesting sprint but again we’re limited to the 6-1 or less entries as the only possible winners.

.

The Pocahontas G3 appears more wide open with 12 entries, but once again, I’m sounding like a broken record, there are only 4 possible winners.  Don’t be surprised if Asmussen sweeps the 2yo races.

.

Moving north to Woodbine, the big stakes racing also begins at 4:22ET.  Follow along with the Grid snapshot.

.

The Summer G1 for open juveniles and a short but talented field of 7.  The ML is all over the favorite, who beat 3 others in the last prep for this race. But they could turn the tables, and Chad Brown will be invading with Appraise.

.

The Seaway G3 is on the artificial track with a field of 10 fillies and mares.  The favorites look strong but there’s also some good value, such as Dreaming of Drew 5-1, Hazelbrook 8-1, Beyond Mybudget 10-1, Golden Vision at 15-1, and even Emmeline at 20-1. It’s kind of wide open and a good betting race.

.

The WOB Mile field of 11 has just enough speed in it to give closers a good nod.  Ivar and Modern Games are obvious and will be the top 2 betting choices.  But look also at Wakanaka at 10-1, March to Arch 12-1, and Homer Screen 10-1.

.

The Natalma for fillies has a talented field of 8, most of which racing 2 turns for the first time.  It’s hard to envision favorite Cairo Consort not winning, but others have a shot including Adora 6-1 and Collecting Flatter 8-1.
